So I'm holding my phone trying to think of an equally solid reply to Opinionated. I have a Galaxy S8+. No means bragging but I'm looking at all it is and wondering. I may wander off but try and hang with me if it's possible.

I once was very active on a phone forum, Blackberry devices. Thinking back I am mulling all the changes, from market leader to form/function. I'm going to ignore the high points, you know, Apple entering etc, that's not really where I wanna go.

The same electronics have evolved to where we fit more in thinner devices. Huge screen, processor, battery. While we've gone thinner devices have gotten bigger, but also lighter. I submit to the phone market being much bigger than vaping, but innivation isn't always based on need. Did we need large screens and to remove keyboards? Do we need 2+GHz processors? Nope, but we sure as hell but them.

Right now there's little movement forward. Of course legislation pending and smallish market impact that. What concerns me as a whole though is the desire to push the same old same old.

I don't know. I have thoughts but cold meds and having to pee really badly are limiting them.

Anywho, I may be way off base. God knows I have a penchant for being wrong.

I think things have stagnated for a reason... just how much more innovation even can be done?

How can the technology itself improve really?

Design? It's been thought of within the limitations of electronics and battery size...

Much won't improve without either the technology of the day improving, or our battery knowledge improving as a whole...

Little things? When it's only a handful of people wanting something then it's not worth the time for a company to design around a thing. ..

For example:

My son wants a four battery mod, but only four were ever made, they sucked, and most people don't like carrying around a brick of batteries so the more battery route was fairly well discontinued.

So that leaves him with basically the best three battery mod ever made, in a form where all issues with it were fixed - and probably no one but my son is very interested in, because people as a whole don't want a three battery mod either.

Now, you take this disdain for the size of a three battery mod as a whole in the community - and you want manufacturers to take their time to turn a three battery configuration into a two battery regulated squonker - and guess what? Once a company does this it WON'T be very popular because it's going to be sizeable. .

And thing is, there are already two battery mech s quonkers on the market which ALSO aren't very popular but to a niche group because of the same thing - size!

There are limitations for everything and I don't see room for much further innovation within the parameters of our technologies today. ..

True enough. Besides the limitations that battery technology places on the entire industry there is also the fact that a combination of super slim margins and increasing regulations are preventing companies from devoting resources to R&D. I can understand why there aren't more new companies coming to the table with new ideas. Why would they? The margins are super thin and if they come up with something that is popular and sells well they know that some other company is going to come in and clone their design. And it's not like they have any recourse against the company that stole their design. The cloners are in China where there is little if any copyright or patent enforcement. Plus, there's the fact that the entire industry is under fire from various governments who are doing everything they can to make it more difficult to do business.

Spot on. I actually compared the smart phone industry to vaping in a conversation with a friend recently. The phone industry came up with innovation and must have products because there was money to be made. R&D is looked at as a way to increase profit when it comes to the smartphone market. Plus there are ways to protect intellectual property rights when it comes to that industry unlike in vaping. In vaping R&D is an expense that they try to minimize because it doesn't result in enough profit.

Your not wrong to a degree... because I do believe what happens with phone technology itself effects what CAN happen with vaping...

Case in point, as soon as they figured out how to make a watertight phone they made a watertight mod. We can now happily puff away in the hot tub...

We already have Bluetooth capable compatible mods

We have wireless charging of our mods right now (Vaporshark)

For people who want smaller devices we have integral battery mods... teeny tiny little things... (I own one and could palm this thing and no one would ever know I was holding a mod... lol)

We don't need to type on our mods - but we can certainly hook them up to our computers and configure them to make them say Hello Darth Vader every morning if we wanted..

We are where we are, and Walter is right - even in areas where real improvements might be able to be made, in this regulatory environment who would want to, not to mention the cloners...

can you imagine the type of innovation a company like samsung or sony could bring to the vaping industry? It will never happen as long as there isn't the potential for profit.

Hey @jfcooley have you seen this Reloader SS squonk bottle fill cap yet?

https://www.bombertech.com/product/reloader-ss/

Not sure it's worth it for the price but it does seem like it would be convenient. Instead of having to pour juice into a dedicated squonk refill bottle you just screw this top on an existing bottle of juice.

Smartphones to vape gear is a real apples to oranges comparison. The complexity of a smartphone, market size, and constant demand for innovation require large R&D budgets of hundreds of millions of dollars per company and billions per year for the industry. That’s bigger than the entire Vape market worldwide.

Second, all Vape gear has to do is heat up a coil, and allow some air to enter the heating chamber and create a vapor to be inhaled. No Bluetooth, WiFi, GSM/CDMA, broad application base to worry about. Yes, you can add some of those features to a mod, but it’s pretty much a downstream setup. Your phone can do stuff to your mod, but your mod won’t control phone features.

There are not that many areas you need to go all crazy on for vape gear. Some companies already spend heavily (for the industry) on development and others fine with a quick me too product, which also happens in the smartphone market too. What will drive companies to innovate will be demand by users. Even if five million new users come along in a year there’s no need to sink money into development other than aesthetics if those consumers buy the stuff without demanding better. When educated consumers start pushing back against shoddy QC, lack of new features, and uninspired design things won’t get better. In a sense our shinyitis dooms is by fostering the impression we’ll buy anything new they release just because it’s new and shiny.

So, what’s out that I can pick up this week? (Despite logic it still remains irresistible)

Nah, WAY too much gold for me. I don't do gold anything. :pervy:

Umm... Uhh... Anyone up for a Therion BF 75C for $85? MFS has those on sale now, so I grabbed a Crown Bull just now for $72.25 (after new customer discount)! :w00t:

That's it, I am officially done... Because I'm running out of email addresses. :sneaky:

that's a great find! I have one picked out and sitting in the cart but I just can't seem to pull the trigger on another single battery squonk mod. I've got 3 unregulated ones now and just cant seem to figure out a what I'm gaining with this. I'm sure someone can convince me otherwise

Regulated is a no worry carefree device when out and about and doesn't need 1/3rd the maintenance a mech requires.

You hit a few nails on the head there.

There's probably room for new ideas on the tank side, but mods have got about as far as they are going to go.

There will never be an end to making them look good. I've seen some jaw dropping mods on this thread lately. I wouldn't mind one with a clock, I've seen pictures of one somewhere and it was a real nice looking mod too.

Sometimes capitalism works against itself. Like Provari. Build something that does the job really well, for some people anyway. After a while all the potential customers have one, and since they last forever where do you go next.

But who knows. When I first got on ECF people used to speculate that soon all the smokers who were potential vapers would switch over, the supply of new smokers would dwindle away, and the vapers would grow old and die off. Haven't heard that theory for a while, it got drowned out by fear of Deeming.

There could still be something great down the road that just hasn't been thought of yet.

Very valid and worthwhile point. Glad I held off on this one this time. UPS just delivered a $350 reminder about my furnace issue. Heat or new Shiny????? God, I hate having to prioritize.

Remember, winter is a temporary phenomenon, it will be warm again; your need for shiny will be with you for all time. Quench it!

Go with heat. Always a sale or code floating around for gear.
I did. Not even a question really. It wouldn't have been the end of the world but I like to know what's coming each month on credit card statements and I try to plan accordingly.

Vaping is why I refuse to have a credit card. Just too easy.
Of course it wasn't a question, just helps sometimes to see it in black and white. :)

I jokingly tried that logic with my bride once when it came to a firearm I was coveting. I recall saying that whatever she thought was more important wouldn't matter if the zombies attacked and we didn't have a way to defend ourselves. She gave me that look that only a wife can give a husband. Similar to the look a mom gives a child.

I understand, as to your wife's disdainful look, I recommend the use of a word currently in vogue: RESIST
