I know. It's ironic that he started this thread (although it was my idea). Although, I have hardly been a model of shinyitis THIS FAR, but so far, so good. LOL. Though I'm only going to try to talk someone out of something if it's a bad mod. The shinyitis support group compels no one to do anything, although we may use humor and gentle persuasion.... But I would not dare assail a shinyitis sufferer with anything more than that, it's an illness, one has to be gentle and supportive :)

I think the question really is, is shinyitis a disease? Or is it a product of our newfound abundance?

While some people have risen to the level of their smoking expenditure on vaping, most of us are hardpressed to do the same.

Vaping IS a savings as an overall value. What is extra then, what we have monetarily that if still smoking we would not have, we just fall into old habits - and spend more then on vaping.

5 years ago my household income dynamic was slightly different, but overall as a household we make the same now as we did then, except, 5 years ago we were dead broke.

Now? Now we eat like kings, throw money on stuff for the kids when they come to visit out of the blue, spend what before would have been considered extravagant sums on Christmas gifts, spend money on vaping and STILL have money left over...

Gone are the paycheck to paycheck days... .

So we do things Iike say ohhh lookey! A squonker! Or ohhhh... that's an RDA I don't have!

Why? Because A) we are used to not buying anything due to the high cost if smoking and B) we actually CAN buy whatever we might like

So is it a disease? Or is it simply a product of having the extra cash to spend, and not having anything better atm to spend it on?

Lol... just my thoughts.

I think it may be in part a product of our newfound abundance, but I also think that it can go a step to far. Like I said, I would really HATE myself if I bought another provari, because I don't need to. I don't lose sleep over the purchases I need (like coils, flavors, and juices) but my income has fallen recently and I attacked vaping with a certain amount of.... reckless enthusiasm and it's a perfect time for me to slow down and be thoughtful about the equipment I purchase. I know perfectly well when I am purchasing something I WANT vs something I NEED. Often it takes a little time, like my shoe obsession, but I can usually reign it in once I recognize it. :)

I guess everyone's motivations are different, which is why I think this thread really should go either way. If you want/need support in purchasing, fine. If you want encouragement NOT to buy something, then state that in the post.

These are merely MY thoughts about it, and honestly, knowing I am accountable to this thread (at least in my own mind) is helpful for me. If it's helpful for others (in whatever direction) then great, also :)

At this point in our lives we could buy pretty much what ever we want within reason but we still try to keep within our budget. Occasionally we splurge. I just purchased 2 Provari's (one new and one used) but both were at a very reasonable price so didn't stretch our budget to far out of balance. Saving for a rainy day sure has helped us out during the lean times.
I just re-read the above statement and realized just how pompous it sounded. We can buy pretty much what ever we want but our wants are not that much. We learned how to scrimp and save for so long it is now hard to not scrimp and save. We don't need the latest and greatest. In fact our newest car is a 1995 Nissan pathfinder and God willing and the creeks don't rise, it will be the last one we ever buy.

We still use our credit card for the convenience but it gets payed off each month. I actually get payed to use it so it is a win for me. I just noticed that I have another $200.00 worth of points accumulated.
and this one made it sound like we get that bonus every month when in fact it usually takes us close to a year to accumulate it so I usually redeem it about this time each year for Christmas. who doesn't love extra Christmas cash :D

I know this is a shinyitis support group. I have never been involved in a support group so figured I better admit my shortcomings to the group. :D

Now on to seeing if there is anything I need to buy before the end of the year with my Christmas bonus :lol::lol:

Lol.. btw, you don't sound pompous. We all have different income levels and different expenditures.

The first year I vaped was actually a financial lifesaver because of the savings from quitting smoking and the financial position we were in at that time. I spent 335 dollars that year on vaping and daresay I (we) needed that savings.

But, financial situations are never permanent and the tides can often change, so I think we are all just wherever we happen to be (financially speaking) right this moment.

Someone who might have more, is just in a different place atm from someone who has little.

I'm like you though... I have a 1996 model vehicle and a 4 wheel drive 90 something model and that's it... not the prettiest either of them but they work great and fulfill the need. Personally, I don't need more. I don't have a tendency to spend on myself much... it's just the way I am.

"Plenty", and what that entails, always varies person to person.

Being happy with the place your in amd saying so, doesn't make anyone sound pompous. .

Of all the people on the forum jfcooley is the LAST person you want to call if you want to be talked OUT of buying something. He is like the little devil on your shoulder whispering: "buy it, just buy it, you know you want it, you'll be happy if you do....JUST BUY IT DAMNIT, BUY TWO OF THEM!"
I resemble that remark...

One nice thing about shinyitis is that it can be fed with expensive things or very inexpensive things. We've learned to be pretty frugal getting through some tough times and remain so even though things are looking up. The occasional vape purchase is still a pleasure, much like a steak dinner after a week of bologna sandwiches.*

*Strip steaks @ $4.99/lb at our favorite market may have influenced this metaphor.

Not close enough apparently.... :lol::lol:.

This is actually why links are NOT encouraged on the shinyitis thread, but I can only control my OWN behaviors, and periodically at best, so I blame no one but myself.

Hopefully when it arrives, I will have forgotten shame and guilt about it, I chose the cheapest shipping option so I bet it arrives in July.

Oh well, there is going to be apparently no need to help the kid with his court costs, fines, jailtime etc. I WAS preparing for it, but it appears that will NO longer be necessary. And, giving a kid help with their probation fees and stuff is really the WORST Christmas gift, so all will be well, I'm fairly certain. :)
