I think that's how it went for Stieg Larson when he wrote "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo". He intended it to be a novel but while writing it found that he loved the main character and couldn't help but share more of her. He ended up finishing 3 novels and died before they could be published and before he could finish the story.
Your expectations were so high! Give it some time. Unless there's actually something wrong with it. Is there?Sorry to break the book club, I have regretitis.

Silmarillion took care of that "too short" problem for me.
I can't remember his name either. I read his books because an ad I saw called him the heir to Tolkien. I was disappointed. My second favorite Sci fi author is Thomas Whatshisname, the dude who wrote the books about the guy with leprosy that was cured in his fictional sci-fi world.... Man, it's been a long time since I read those, and LOL, tells you something that I cannot remember but he also finished his story.
If there is one thing I cannot stand, it's an author who starts a whole series of books and then won't finish. And listen to me, I should be editing right now.... So I have some sympathy for being you know, laggardly.

The Dark Tower series was always intended to be what it is, but King did "lose his way" by taking an extended break. Sometimes a story that big must be mentally exhausting...I think the problem with some of these series writers is that there original intention wasn't to write a series but then the first book became so popular that they tried writing a series that was never in their head to write.
Others just got lost along the way in the more minute details and lost inspiration to finish. ..
A one off book is hard enough, to make a series has got to be difficult.
It's like the bible of Middle Earth. It tells of creation and the almost immediate struggle between good an evil. You find out how and why the rings were forged, how the sword of Isildur came about and when it was broken. All the stuff that's touched on in the trilogy is fleshed out.For some reason, that is the one book that I couldn't get into. Maybe I'll give it a try again... some day.
Uh oh. Maybe it's just the build. Don't give up on it.Sorry to break the book club, I have regretitis.

It is not an easy read, but it's intense once you really get into it.
I wasted a solid week the last time I read it (ca 2014).
