Had such a problem with it wanting to unwind when I made it.
Any tips?

In addition to the other tips you should mount the coil snug to your posts/deck and pull it away, tightening the wire around your mandrel. With a postless deck it should take 1-2 tries until you nail it.
Would also recommend 1 more wrap.
Beware of the little razors buzzing around when you cut that wire, one embedded itself in my fingertip some months ago.
