We are only at the top of the food chain due to developing tools. Without them, we are often lost.
I wonder what people did in the "old days" when modern medicine wasn't around to counter a snake bite and etc. I guess they just died, or something. I know my grandmother got bit by a black widow and survived it, with little medical intervention. Of course, we Aussies (she was convict Aussie stock) needed to be hardy to survive, or whatnot. Interesting, however, as the SECOND I realized it was a brown recluse bit, off to the urgent care I went. To be fair, one was on my FACE. That one I looked up home remedies (garlic poultice) and used them as well. I didn't even have a scar (unlike my other bite which was abx and steroids only....)

Opossums, though, they're just ugly, gross, and if they have rabies, I don't think you'd find it that "cute" to have one go after you. I am not fond of those critters, although I will admit there are ones that I hate... worse. :)
Rabies is extremely rare in Opossums, bears would be a more likely carrier of the disease. Opossum have a very low body temperature, so the virus is unable to survive in their body. 10 things you didn't know about opossums

Speaking of "modern" times I carefully pulled out my morning meds but didn't take them... I wanted to be sure I wasn't going to puke again.... When I got to them, some moisture had entered my little shot-glass, which is where I store them because a) it's handy and b) it amuses me.

They were all gloopy... I probably should have tossed them, but I was too dopy to realize that. I think it will probably be fine, but I really wonder what happened to that shot glass? Did I spit in it somehow, when I was headed to bed? Spill coffee in it? WHAT???????????? I'm not sure I really want to know, but I'm expecting an interesting morning. Sigh.

While there are things I "hate" about modern culture, I really hope a reversion to the Dark Era doesn't come during my lifetime, at least. I'd have several really major, major problems to address, number one being, "Okay, no meds, how will I handle crazy?"

I think I woke up on the wrong day...:lol: It's like "Alexander, and the terrible horrible no good bad day," a bit over here.

They can carry other diseases though

Is it okay to just dislike an animal just because you do? Or is that like, animal racism?

My husband has a totally similar fear of bats. He'll go out and kill a rattlesnake, no problem, but if bats start to flitter around he looses his cool like a 12 year old girl. It happened because he and his sister were poking around in one of their outbuildings and came across a baby rat tucked in some nest of some sort. The husband opened it, and the bat flew into his hair and crawled all over him. While bats also carry rabies, his fear is somewhat understandable if you ask me.

I don't want to know 10 facts about opossums. I hate them . Can I not be allowed to leave it at that? I just really dislike them, and I don't feel that I need to provide a rationale. I bet you can't even eat them safely, like you can squirrels.

Totally ok to not like an animal just cause, but recognize they are a very beneficial species with few drawbacks beyond looks. I can imagine the entire 50 teeth thing is a bit disconcerting... Try to base the fear or hate on facts rather than myths.

Bat are a very beneficial species, but there is a good chance if you come in contact close contact, you just had a rabies exposure; kinda like if you see a live skunk during the day on the side of the road.

I had an outdoor kitty cat who adopted me, and she was precious. It happened a lot after I got allergic, I had "outdoor strays" who wouldn't come inside. We later had a skunk mommy who came to eat from the cat bowl with her two babies. They were totally adorable, and didn't seem rabid, I was more worried about getting sprayed than anything else, if I got too close. I just put more food out.

I WAS glad that my son had stopped his toddler practice of eating dry catfood whenever my back was turned, however. But, we never had any issues. She appeared focused, not "odd" the way many rabid animals looked and behaved perfectly normally so I never worried much (or about my cat either, who'd clearly been a stray for years. But she didn't "behave" rabidly and I guess could have been a carrier.

Now skunks are TRULY beautiful, in my opinion. I always wanted to pet her but never quite worked up the courage. I have heard being sprayed by a skunk really reeks, and requires a lot of tomato juice.

I can recognize that opossums add their share to the food chain. Heck, even mosquitoes do and I hate them far, far more than opossums. I still am never going to "love on" an opossum. Or a mosquito. LOL.

When Anna begins to advocate the extermination of a particular species then I will be on the "myth or fact" bandwagon. Disliking, a species, OK by me for any reason or no reason.

What are your thoughts on that boxer, figured you would have chimed in.
It's purty, and purty expensive.
2 20700 batteries would last a bit, but I personally have no need beyond 80w, and I don't think I'd need 2x battery life.
Didn't look at bottle size but I'm guessing 7ml..ish. I guess if you need 200w it's an option. I'm not going to knock having options, but it's too much and too expensive (for what it is) for me.

2inches of rain. Dropped boys off and got stuck trying to turn around. Had to drag the damn Escape out with a pickup. Covered in mud.

To it's credit, the dot survived mud well. Would've taken a pic but cleaned it up right away, then my phone...

Of course had to stop at a Food Lion. Hope lines are short.

God. I just woke up for 2 hours... Then puked. What a way to start a Sunday, man. No idea what it was, but the husband did cook last night. He and I have vastly different ways of handling chicken.

I rarely puke but totally hate it, so I always mention it, LOL. Gonna be the first thing I say to the husband after he wakes up. "Honey, I PUKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Anna

Two thoughts:

First, are you sure last night's dinner was chicken? He could have been playin' possum.
Second, who's poisoning who again?

Hope you feel better ASAP!

IDK, I'd consider extermination of the "wild" (from accidentally domesticated pigs getting lose) wild pig epidemic, I'd advocate for that to be wiped out. Of course, that's a different situation than say, a wild animal part of the food chain. I'm an advocate for most things to live, especially when they don't get up in my grill. A rattlesnake in the house with me would be shot, immediately, by my own hand (unless the husband was around) but I'm not going to do a "catch and release" in that circumstance.

You know why Aus has such draconian import measures on non native flora and fauna? Rabbits. They took over the landscape and ATE EVERYTHING. For a while you could get a premium for shooting them from the government, I think they ended up releasing a virus that killed or sterilized most of them.

Me, I LOVE my "wild" rabbits, they're one of the only things in the yard (besides the birds) I enjoy watching. But animals (domesticated or not) can become a real problem, even though they may be quite lovely in some ways. It really depends....

Prob a good thing you did not work up the courage and the little one stopped sharing food lol Skunks, bats, and raccoons top the list of carriers of rabies. If a normally shy nocturnal species is out during the day or seem oddly confident, maintain lots of space. That was the number one take away in vet tech school when it came to the topic of wildlife and rabies.

Could be, but we lived on a farm and mostly saw her at dusk. So she wasn't behaving abnormally just getting food. She actually looked to be bursting with health, one of the prettier and lovelier looking wild animals I'd seen. I realize she may have been a carrier, but I deemed it rather unlikely at the time. Besides which, my cat who also ate that food came to no harm (if you think I was going to get her to the vet, think again, although I did do a yearly rabies shot from home). I just found it best to leave her be, not freak about her. I am a sucker for animals with their babies around, and it was my first true skunk sighting, and I was thrilled.

I'm not a fan of "relocating" animals if they aren't doing harm, and rabies is everywhere on the East Coast. We all had to get rabies shots due to my sister's dog (she would jump the fence) coming home with a decomposed animal. If my son were still finding cat food "delish" well, that might have been another matter. She didn't display any signs of rabies, and wasn't exactly what I'd call bold, but she got to know all of us and that we didn't mean her harm. If she felt uncomfortable she'd just vanish into the night....

I like animals more than people mostly. (present company excluded) well, most of you anyway.....Joking!!!
I do not like snakes, but will go out of my way to try not to harm them.

The other day I told my coworker about taking MIL to parade, and told him I like people watching at the parades. He said "but you don't like people"

I replied "I like people, I just don't like interacting with people"
