Yes before cable when there was just a few channels and we had to change them manually to watch the bullfights and wrestling we always had added to the stock antenna some tin foil and or coathangers twisted.
Learned my lesson when we first bought this house and i went on slanted roof to install large antenna it was ok then years later with cable installed went back up there to cut the metal straps that held it to chimney walking downwards to it i slipped and only thing that saved me was that chimney.
I took it down though and said a prayer with thanks and promised never to go up there again.
I grew up on a farm. Cable wasn't an option and so we were limited to 5 channels. Today I refer to it as "amish cable"
