Canadian Tire and Walmart sell similar brands. Throw Best buy Canada into that mix and you can now have competition for price matching. Always a deal to be found among those 3. Can’t remember what I spent on my Instant Pot but did buy it at Best buy who matched the price plus an additional 10% off to Walmart.
It’s the same brand, but as I understand, Canadian Tire sells the better model. Walmart only has the 5 qt 6 in 1, where mine are Duos - not a big deal, all mine have that the other doesn’t is yogurt function and high and low pressure, although I’ve never used low. But the yogurt function paid for the machine.

I got mine from Amazon but the have them at a lot of stores. Other brands out there too but I can’t speak for those, I just know IP has really good customer service so I went with that.

No, I’m not a paid spokesperson lol, just a huge fan.

That's pretty much for expensive cuts only. As Dom stated the equipment is expensive. I'm not talking about the wannabe immersion circulators you can find for like $120 but of the real thing you can make big portions in (more like $1500++).
Instead of those cheap-o things you might as well just

:D

Yeah I tried that and it somehow worked. I cooked for 7 persons though and it was quite stressful to keep the temperature right. Wouldn't do again. I'd just pre-sear the meat, let cool down to room temp and finish in the oven all at the same time, much less mucking about.

Are you saying that with experience? I’ve never tried but have spoken to few who swear by the Anova Sous Vide which can be had for ~$130 CAN

If you have a gas stove then better get a stove top pressure cooker. It's the "mech" of instant pots :D
I don't need my cookware of all things to be programmable (or message me on instagram) and, as we all know, electronics can suddenly die and then you have a very expensive laundry basket to keep your dirty knickers in.
PCs are usually very sturdy with a thick bottom, things you look for in a good normal pot anyways so you have an extra class A pot even when not pressurizing.

You can steam or cook rice in it as well, and my favorite - make stock in less than 12 hours.

I’d only use a stove top pc if I were canning. The up is dummy proof. No way I’ll blow the kitchen up with that! I make my all day soups in an hour, including prep and clean up. Rice, perfect every time. Dang it now I’m hungry.

Obviously I didn't buy one but I've seen it at other people's place. They can't keep up with bigger portions (eg 4*1.5" steaks) and stuff will get cooked differently depending on location.
I've also eaten at restaurants who got the professional version and it's a different result.

Who actually blows their kitchen up with a stove top PC? Did Scott Gottlieb tell you that?

Honestly if you don't put high proof alcohol in there (and thus creating a one stroke combustion engine, a.k.a. rocket engine) I don't see how you would make modern day steel PCs dangerous.

The best recent addition to my kitchen is a fancy fuzzy logic rice cooker I picked up this year. It's pretty amazing.

Until I had a white girlfriend I didn't realize not everyone owns a rice cooker. I think it was the first thing I got when I moved out. Then I lit it on fire by accident and almost burned down my apartment building. Then I had to buy an identical one so my mom wouldn't find out and worry.

I don't know what i'd do without one. When we go to stores and I see a high end one I still tap my girlfriend on the shoulder and give her the look while signalling to it with my eye brows. "Get a look at that one!"

Edit: Now that I think of it, a rice cooker is what my family got her for Christmas before we lived together. It was literally the first gift she got from my family.

I’m not trying to compare it to professional Sous Vides cookers used by restaurants. I only have myself to feed with the odd guest from time to time so not looking to make large portions. Never tried something that was cooked with an Anova, at least not knowingly – but have heard many positive comments about it.

For 1-2 persons that'll be fine. Probably.
If you can cook the meat properly without one it'll still be excellent though (and a lot quicker).
How many prime cuts of meat can you get for $120? ^^

Quicker is not always better. Convenience also comes into play. I can’t have these intellectual conversations on ECF if I am trying to cook a steak in a pan at the same time. Or…entertain my guest ;)

I have one of each ( stovetop and electric). Love both, but the stovetop isn’t set it and forget it like the electric. I’d rather knife chop than pull out the dusty food processor or hand knead dough than put it in my kitchenaid. My neighbor borrowed my stovetop version and managed to blow the top off on her second batch. Roast beef gravy up to her ceiling. Either she didn’t reapply the rubber seal correctly or she didn’t keep an eye on the pressure gauge. She bought an electric and loves it. But, while I cook for the joy of it, she cooks to have a meal done at x time

No rice cooker until I hit 45. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks... rice.... white rice.... At least we have baked potato, boiled potato, mashed potato, French fries, home fries, potato chips.... Didn't know the U.S. was a major exporter of rice. Strange to watch the news over concern of rice prices and shortages....

All my life i've bought the big bags of thai/viet rice. My dad and his wife get a pallet shipped over by boat once a year for the family... they look like this:

Recently I went from regular white rice we eat to Kokuho rose and I will never go back. Kukuho Rose is American grown, but a small bag costs $15 which is 4x the regular price for rice we get non-wholesale from the chinese supermarket.

$15.50 for 2.25kg

vs $15.87 for 8.18kg

With SV you're going to have to sear your meat as well - so no time saving there (this can also be done way ahead of time in both cases).
Put it in bags and into the SV majigg vs put steaks on a pan and in the oven - no time saving there either.

Foods for great conversations are usually stews or braises where you only go into the kitchen once to get the finished stuff.

Arduino FTW!
Probably a half dozen sketches and libraries out there already for that.

Come on down and visit our rice fields. Seafood, petro, sugar cane and mardi gras beads aren’t all we have lol
