@Zazie have you tried unplugging your keyboard to see if these issues still happen?
that's a good point, i forget what it was but my laptop started acting odd it apparently was something to do with the keyboard, it needed a fix....don't remember exactly but I think it had to do with the key's back lighting program....

Here are a few of the things that are happening:

* When I click on a tab, they just rapidly cycle, though if I move the cursor down to the page, I stay in that tab.

* The volume in VLC Player turns itself up to 200% and when I try to turn it down, it just goes back up again.

*The speaker volume, on the other hand, insists on returning to 0% no matter what I do.

* In, say, Windows Security Center, when I try to scroll down, the cursor automatically returns to the top of the page.

There's more, but you get the idea.

I ran a full scan, and no threats were found. I'll probably do an offline scan next, even though I have little hope that it will help. A system restore is on the horizon.

Computers are great till this kind of thing happens. Then they are hateful demons intent on driving a person mad.
Might try turning the keyboard upside down and give a few firm shakes. Had something similar happen and this worked. Figured some crumb was caught under a key.

When system restore didn't do anything, I switched to a different keyboard (I use wireless touchpad keyboards and always have at least one backup on hand), and all is now well. I'll check the other one for crumbs tomorrow. Doubt if I'll find anything, but there could be some fur buildup somewhere. It's under warranty, anyway.

I don't understand how a wonky keyboard could cause all the problems I was experiencing. I accept that it did but am inclined to think that darke magicks were involved. Regardless, I'm quite happy to be back using this older keyboard. It's much better than the new-and-improved version. I'll be very sad when it and its backup break.

Maybe your cat shared that lint ball with your computer. :D
