goodbye
Good morning Shiny's! Not very shiny here today. Dorian is coming up the coast and it's pretty dark right now. We are supposed to get rain and wind gusts of 20 to 30 mph. Glad I don't live on the coast. They are going to get the worst of it. Hope you all have a great day. I think we are going to be alright. Keep you posted:)

I am in the red circle....

Stay safe and inside! Hurricanes just suck for disrupting life, causing havoc. Cary is near R/D?

That's just a blowy and wet night isn't it at 20-30 mph :) Or am I completely understating the seriousness here? There may be a lot of rain left on it which could cause flooding I suppose which can be pretty dangerous....

Just slap me down if i'm way off beam here :)

Take care...

Holy moly I'm getting way too chatty in my old age

But I do have a Pet Lamb - Meet Spike ;)

He was a triplet, his mum couldn't feed all 3 well enough, so we fed him. Then another ewe had triplets who all died. So she is now looking after and feeding Spike - we still give him the odd feed, but his new mum does most of the work :thumb:

Here on the coast, 50-60mph winds in a rainstorm aren’t unusual. But inland, trees and exterior structures are vulnerable to compromise. You also have drainage systems that aren’t set up to handle such heavy, quick rains = flooding. The flooding water can also cause trees to topple. Anything over 3” of rain per hour can outpace even a drainage/pump system designed for a flood prone area like New Orleans.

Good luck to all affected. Especially if you're in the coast, that's going to be nasty. Here's hoping the folks in Charleston make out ok
Amen to that! It’s not the storm that’s always the worst, it’s the weeks after with electric etc that are awful

Thank you! Yes, Cary is neighboring south to Durham and neighboring west to Raleigh. Being on a SE coastal state, we get hurricanes occasionally. We are not in a flood plane, and we get storms with 20 to 30 mph wind enough that this storm shouldn't be too scary. I stopped and got a couple cases of bottled water last night, just in case. People must not be too worried. The store wasn't packed, and there was plenty of water. We've had a few terrible hail storms this Summer, and a nice 25ft x 40ft vegetable garden that didn't stand a chance this year:(

I'll be here off and on all day and keep you all posted. In the mean time, I have all the necessities.

Thank you Charlie. You are not way off at all. A rainy, blustery night is exactly what I am expecting for our area. That changes of course, the closer you get to the coast. As to how much rain, time will tell. I'll keep you all posted. Have a brilliant, shiny day Charlie!:thumb:

Ange, I am curious ... my uncle didn't have sheep on his farm so I have a couple questions. In fall do you attach dye bags to the rams so you know which ewes have been impregnated? And after do you separate the ewes to another field? I know blue/boy (pink/girl) but the pink on Spike's right side is that an ID to the lambing ewe? Also how big is your flock? How many rams? :)

twilight all.
my replacement billet box has now been in the air for 13 days. it must be exhausted flapping its side panels for such a long time. starting to get a bit jaded about the whole situation. the initial excitement that accumulated before the malfunctioning example arrived is nowhere to be seen (though I'm obviously checking tracking daily as I've not completely lost the will to shiny).
also not tasting flavours as a result of rampant dehydration i think.
yeah. it's all go.
now that I've moped a bit and cheered everyone up I'll slink back into the lair for a spell.

Ah, that's the real estate agent in you. Why people ever buy in a flood plain I just don't know. I have a policy for many years now that I will only buy up on a hill...it could be a raised plateau but usually isn't but no way would I be in the flood plain if you paid me.

The problem has been that the records available to planning are only the last 75-100 years and they've traditionally made bad decisions. My current property overlooks a plain which runs down to the med and parts of it are a flood plain for the Argens river...the poor people down there have endured terrible flooding over the last 10 years or so. And now the insurance companies are refusing to cover the new purchaser. The planet is a very old place and the propensity for weather events that completely outstrip the norms are too dependable in my view....

Always buy on a hill folks :)

Is Raleigh Durham airport still operating? That's a pretty big hub and I haven't heard if they were affected or thought to be far enough inland to keep open.

RDU is still open, but there are 344 closings and delays in the area. Mostly schools and activities. There are some flights cancelled, depending on their destinations. I live in Wake County, and all Wake County schools are closed. My 16 year old son is thrilled. It just amazes me that as long as it cancels school, they don't care how much damage the natural disaster causes.
