I trimmed the legs flush with the post, so I don't know if that means they are too short or long. I never really thought of leg length being a variable before.

As for wattage, I started at around 10w and I have it at 12w. I am not sure what is causing the popping sound, but I thought maybe it had something to do with my wattage not being right.
Popping is great! I never like a build unless it pops and crackles. Gurgling is a different story though - that'd mean you don't have enough wick.

I don't think it is gurgling, but I would probably prefer less popping. It is not much of an issue, it is producing good vapor and flavor.

BTW, I saw this today: Australia coronavirus: Victoria declares 'state of disaster,' locking down millions in Melbourne - CNN
Looks like it is getting worrisome in Melbourne. How are things is your area? I don't know enough about the geography of Australia to know how close that is to Sydney.

@Redbird11, way to go on getting your first rta build going.

Popping and crackling.

Crackling while you are taking a hit is 100% normal. It can be heard more loudly on some rta's versus others. It means things are working as they should be.

Popping is another matter. If your atty has sat for awhile and you take a hit you will get a single "pop" or two. That is perfectly normal.

If however you are getting continuous popping throughout your hit then it is the wick. You don't have enough cotton in your coil.

With cotton you want enough of it in the coil so you "feel" resistance when you move your wick side-to-side in the coil. If you feel very light resistance then you do not have enough wick. If your coil is visibly moving, or distorting it's shape and set location, when you are inserting your cotton wick then you have too much wick.

There is a balance you need to find. You will get it. :)

Heck, I am just happy my first build is vaping well and leak free. That is one of the reasons I picked the Ares 2 to try first. It was supposed to be pretty easy to build and no real reports of it leaking. I figured it couldn't screw it up too bad.

Hey there...
Cute Cardinal2.jpg
One more thing I do is, after filling the tank I open the af all the way and blow instead of draw through the drip tip. It gets any excess liquid out. That helps with gurgling and excess popping and crackling. But as SMT said, crackling is perfectly normal. :thumb:

I tried some lower ohming ni-80 clapton wire on a mech once, first press of the fire button it sounded like a popcorn machine...

Lol. I took that coil off lickety split and gave the spool to my son... haha

Probably a good idea. Mech mods and popping sounds are probably not a good combination.

Well, it was an experience. I was watching 3 different instruction videos while I was doing it, switching back and forth between them. Was that overkill? Perhaps, but I wanted to get it right the first time.

I found the wicking to be a little more difficult than expected. I couldn't tell how much cotton to put in, how much to cut off the tail, and how much I should thin it out. The video said that with higher VG I needed to thin it out more than high PG liquid. Mine was about 30pg/70vg give or take so I thinned out the cotton some.

Flavor is good. Pretty good vapor production as well. I am getting some popping when I vape on it though, which I don't have an issue with on my Zlides/Zenith tanks. Also, not sure about what wattage I should set it at. I'm used to drop in coils that have a wattage range. Also, the prebuilt coil I am using is suppossed to be a 1.0 ohm, but it is reading as 1.10 ohm on the ohm reader and the mod.

That is a long winded way of saying "review currently in progress".
I had to drop my nic when I switched from Zeniths to rebuildables. Be prepared.

Oh, and congratulations. I was really nervous my first time.

Well yea! for little vape mail packages! I have some new wire coming from AVS (thanks for the sale heads up @Hightech Redneck ) out for delivery, and some Apple Pie flavoring from BCF, (found out I was near out when I went to make juice... lol)

I really need to start making lists that say things like "nearly out of x flavor, order more!"...
