Hey everyone! What do you all have in store for the weekend. I’m planning on building a few RDAS that I have and haven’t built yet. And I’m still working on the organizing. That’s not going very quickly though.

I wish I was excited about getting some new gear but to be honest I already have ALOT of stuff inc brand new gear that I’ve never used. Nothing new has really perked me up. I keep looking but nothing seems that different from what’s already been done.

I do take suggestions though!
I'm going to build a KFL'21 to test flavors, a couple of others that need a new wick too. Tomorrow maybe.

There's not much new that interests me either, there are a couple of atty's I hope to get my hands on on FB, there's a draw for them, so the chances are so-so.
The other things that are of interest are almost off the market, the few places I find are almost a game of chance whether I get scammed or not.

I'm told collecting high-end camera lens is just as exciting.
Been there. Done that. Sold most of my cameras and lenses after I became disabled. vaping is now filling that role. And I hope it continues in the future.

Hey T! I do still h ave my Rotten Metal, it only works half of the time., so it is retired. Turns itself off. I also have a Silver Relic, same situation. I would love to turn one of the golds into something like either one. Tell me how to do it? What would you use? Here are pics of them and the Minikin V3 I am currently rocking (and hating)View attachment 989248
They really do look cool!
I'm not sure the right way to get that exact finish (someone here probably would) but the first stage would be to dismantle one of the gold ones and remove the battery sled and electronics from the body.
Most dual 18650 devices are pretty easy to break down. If you don't feel comfortable doing that then maybe your local electrician or even car mechanic could help.

Once you have the metal body separated you need to remove the paint. Here are some ways to do that:

You might find that just removing the paint will give you a raw enough look. It will build its own patina over time.
Otherwise if you want give the metal a more aged look this type of approach could work:

I love the idea of using vinegar to strip the paint.
Good luck and let us know how you go.

I would perhaps remove the paint on a couple of square centimeters and see how the metal ages over time, preferably at least 1 month.
Then you also get the feeling of how much work it takes to take the whole mod without actually having dismantled it as you have to if you are going to take the whole mod.
Unfortunately, zinc alloy is widely used on mods, mostly due to production.
Aluminum and SS usually require milling and a lathe for the manufactor, but are great metals to keep in good condition for us users.

That looks amazing and appeals big time to my inner squonkaholic. Fingers crossed it doesn't cost an arm and a leg and a few fingers
It uses the same chip as the Stubby, so my guess is that the price will likely be around the same as the Stubby.

I like most things about it except the fill method for the squonk bottle. Seems a little slow and clumsy with that little screw cap. Also looks like it might back up a bit.

I was trying to get a good look at the threading. It seems like the threads are unnecessarily fine - if so, you'd have to twist that thing like 20 times before it came out.

Thanks T! I think my older ones look cool too and I would still be rocking them but they are unstable
That is more info than I have gotten on the times I have asked in this thread.
I like the one that uses vinegar too. I might practice removing the sled and electronics on one of my older ones. See if it is something I can do myself.
I do not like the look of a rusty one though and that seems to be the only way they tell of a new finish once all the paint is off. I will hope once I get the gold off, there is some kind of silver ish finish under that. Or even no finish.
For a minute I thought "Why not remove the sleds and electronics and transfer them to the older ones I love that no longer work right" But then I remembered, I have super glued in the magnets a time or two and that is another malfunctioning part of them. I do all kinds of stuff in my garage. I am currently working on a garden gazing ball. Next might be the Minikin redo

I guess I could boil the vinegar/water solution and add the door so I am not adding any of the electronic but I would also be scared this would loosen and remove the magnets.

My only incoming is Steam Crave's Meson RTA. But it's got some big boots to fill to beat my Juggerknot MR/Mini RTA tribe

I haven’t tried that Juggerknot but watched a review on the meson rta and it looks pretty good so I requested one for review. It’ll probably be 2-3 weeks before I get it though.

You'll come up with something cool - no doubt.. I tried to find out if the minikins are made from zinc alloy or aluminium but couldn't get a definitive answer. Either way, they won't rust in that traditional way you see with iron, so any ageing will probably end up with a dull or mottled silver colour.

Yay! I was worried about that. I got out my set of mini screwdrivers and got the 3 tiny screws that I felt held the sled in. I took them out. I pulled and pulled and could not get the sled out. I am taking them to my handyman tomorrow. He is also an electrician by trade. I am taking 3 in total. The 2 golds and then a pink one that has gone the same way as the silvers and let him practice on the pink one. lol

Can't wait for the next update!!

I googled "how to age zinc alloy " and got some good hits. Once you get the paint off You can have some fun with it..

Here are a couple of techniques:

What a difference the “right” tool makes. This isn’t exactly shiny but it may help other Shinys do their thing lol!

I’ve been having a hell of the time lately stripping the hex grub screws on several of my favorite RDAs using the hex tools that come with them. I was recently watching a build video on YT and was impressed with how well his hex screwdriver worked so I asked him what type he was using. He responded Wiha German made ones. So I bought a small set on Amazon. I think they were about $22.

I’m so glad I did because even though these are a bit on the pricey side they are like night and day using them. They grip the hex grub screw like a glove with no slipping to mess up the head of the screw. And they are very light. I had bought a cheaper set several months ago from Amazon as well but they were awkward to use like the balance was off, too long and they didn’t fit like these Wihas do.

The upshot is that a few RDAs that I thought I’d never use again because I stripped them are now back in rotation after using this. I was going to change out the grub screws from the accessories bag but don’t really need to now.

That’s it. I hope everyone is enjoying their weekends:)
