They should be challenged with teenage smoking, HNB tech and the kitchen sink when it comes to tobacco and asked what have they done there.
If they answer more than just paid it lip service we know they're full of it.

I started reading just a little today, just to get a better overview.
Arguing to the government about the background to the decision would be one thing I would do.
Because there must be a lot to be able to grasp.
The other thing I would focus on is the lack of action over illegal sales.
I think all of us vapors, we prefer safe products, how many of us would buy a package that says 0mg while the seller says that what you see is not what you get in reality. If the government had invested resources to put an end to illegal sales, all vapors would have cheered for them.
I don't know how well organized the vape community is in Australia, if they aren't they should be.

So we're talking deliberate actions to threaten public health, increase criminal activities, gaslight the public, loose a hell of a lot of money from lost tax revenues, even more money lost by paying for an unnecessary and unqualified advisory authority, more money lost trying to enforce regulations and more strain on the healthcare system.

We (local vape community) have been doing that for a long time now. I have sent multiple letters to my local member of parliament and the various health ministers, including the current one - Mark Butler.
Unfortunately it's been no use. These guys have an agenda that has more to do with political point-scoring than health outcomes.
The public mood in Australia is extremely anti-vaping because of the relentless anti-vape propaganda that's been spread over the last few years, and the politicians know it - they can smell a PR win of course.
Also as an experiment, and to confirm what I already knew, I just phoned two huge Sydney medical centres (20 plus doctors in each) and asked if any of their GPs prescribed nicotine. Nup.
The staff at the local B&M vape stores have told me they don't know of a single customer that's ever been able to find a prescribing doctor - the only legal way to vape nicotine products here. It's a sad, bad joke.
This sentence jumped out at me: "To tackle the growing black market, the government will increase the product standards for vapes, including by restricting flavors and colors." How in heaven's name will "restricting flavors and colors" impede the growth of the black market?
They'll hide behind whatever negative propaganda they can, to continue falsely spreading misinformation to the public, as long as it continues to help them, and whoever they're in bed with, rake in the money.

Yeah, but won't restricting colors and flavors be more likely to drive people to the black market than the reverse, since presumably that market will give them access to the colors and flavors they can no longer purchase legally?
Yep, the only thing the Australian authorities achieve is that drug dealers get more attractive products to sell.
If they had at least opted for a vaper to import for their own use, that would help the person, complicated yes, but at least livable.
