I did this with my pop's syringes. Esp when he switched from syringes and vials to the new pen setups they have. He ended up with several bags of unopened syringes he no longer needed. I clip off the ends. A little dangerous if you don't know what you are doing, because it takes a bit of pressure to cut off the tips. A slip can result in a nice finger cut. Never cut myself, but aware of the dangers. But you end up with a nice sized hole and a 1ml syringe with .1 increments, as Andria pointed out.

BTW if you're diabetic and have syringes lying about... toss some clear nail polish on them and pull out the needle, they are great for diy.

I use them all the time for flavorings since they are easy to read and almost fool proof.

0.85ml of your base (pg/vg at any percentage) and 0.15ml of flavoring gives you a fairly accurate mark to start at.

Take notes and enjoy!

I bought some 18ga needles from smoktek, and they came with points, rather than blunt -- and it's actually a good thing I do have some pointy needles when I run into childproof caps that CANNOT be opened; I just pierce the LDPE bottle and suck all the juice out to put into another bottle! :D

But I've found a good means of blunting the ones I want blunt -- fine sandpaper; it gets rid of the sharp point but still leaves the "side mounted" hole, so you get good flow even with an 18ga needle.

Andria, part of the way I go the way I go, cutting off both the needle and the whole nipple end, is because it leaves a nice open hole. Even VG flows easily in and out of it. But as with all things vaping, you go with what works for you. I don't really say this as a counterpoint, because I do like what you do as well. Just kinda explanation of why I go the route I do.

By the way, I just got an order for some juice from Steam Punk vapors. spvapors dot com, IIRC, is the URL. I got some Acid Rain flavor. VG heavy. Tastes pretty good. Not "knock you over" full flavor. But the flavor is nice. Am suspect the heavy VG may require it to steep a bit for the flavor to get stronger, even though it is a fruit flavor.
Long story short, flavor tastes good but is a tiny bit weak. But I am really happy with it because of the price.
120ml for about $25.
And they are having a sale right now. Copy-pasted from my email - Use Coupon Code "cyber" at checkout and save 30% off your order from now til midnight Monday 12/1/14.

So thought I would share that.
Only thing is you might be unhappy with the packaging. It comes in what looks like a shampoo bottle. Professionally put together, but a shampoo bottle looking thing nonetheless. And there is no quality seal.
Now, this really doesn't bother me. I totally understand and don't worry about stuff like that. Only thing is, I get kinda worried that someone is going to make a stink over this, cause them to have to amp up their operation and result in losing the super-low prices they offer.

Anywho, I am enjoying the stuff. Just got my order but am considering grabbing another bottle of somethign else. I mean you can't beat 30% off on 120ml of juice that was only $25 to start with.

Tim, you probably have your answer by now but I feel compelled to comment. Dump those batteries and get your multimeter out. I do not have a clue what the problem is and Baditude is not posting these days to ask him. Go find the forum/thread where the battery experts hang out and post all your details there. There are several people on ECF that are real into battery stuff and can help you troubleshoot. I can not. Like you said, be safe first. Do not use that mod until you know it is ok.

I guess I do have a battery question after all.
So I had a dead short in my mod the other day. I felt my mod heat up. Immediately I took the battery out of the mod, and the battery was SUPER hot. Like too hot to touch. Five minutes later, it is still hot. There was no venting or swelling of the battery, but I know it goes without saying this battery must go to the discard pile.

So I THOUGHT I knew what my problem was. I "fixed" what I thought was the problem, grabbed a second battery and took a toot. Well, I still hadn't fixed my problem. Dead short again. Battery starts to heat up. But this time, my reaction time was quicker, because I had just killed a battery and my senses were full on paying attention.

SO the second battery heated up. But not quite as hot as the first one. It was hot, but not quite the "too hot to touch" degree the first battery had gotten to.
(BTW, I was running the green 20Amp sonys)
Still took a minute or two for the second one to cool down.

Question is, should the second battery also be discarded? I mean it did heat up as a result of a dead short. But it didn't get as close to venting as the first one. I don't mean to take shortcuts with safety (which I why I am asking) but I don't want to throw away $15 worth of battery away either if I am being over cautious.

As I type this and going through it with y'all here, I realize the advice I would probably give to someone else asking the question would be "toss it. Why take a chance? Your safety is worth more than $15 or even $30 for two compromised batteries." I realize I should probably just discard them both. But I will pop the question out there anyways. After a year of sub-ohming, this has been my first incident. Never really dealt with this before.

Big welcome to the thread. You got off to a great start. 4 cigarettes a day is a good place to be while you learn about your gear, nic level and juices. Quick gear upgrade was good too. Give yourself time. A lot of people just wake up one morning and realize that they have not had a cigarette in a couple of days. For others it takes longer since smoking is not just a chemical addiction but lots of psychological stuff too.

Best advice I can give is to not get worried about the ones you smoke, count the ones you don't.

I just discovered this thread. I read a few of the posts. Some smokers have a lot more complicated challenges than I've had. So much for feeling sorry for myself. I've read accounts of people who say they smoked their last cig the day they started vaping. It wasn't so easy for me but here's the way I approached it.

I've got a pretty good record so far. Before I started vaping in early October I was clueless about the subject. I picked up on vaping from a buddy at work. The day I started my cigs declined 80% with no apparent effort and stayed there. I was quite impressed with that. I'll call that 80% control and a great success. The question was, could I get 100% control.

I decided that day instead of trying to get rid of the last 4 daily cigs right away I'd leave them alone and take some time to figure out devices and liquids and get some new habits. At first the liquids made me slightly queasy. I figured I'd get over that and I did. That took three weeks. I also couldn't easily tolerate the amount of nic I needed to be mostly distracted from cigs. Getting that right took a month and I'm still working on it. During that time I had a cig if I wanted one. That took the pressure off and eliminated anxiety but it was still just 4 a day so almost no will power involved.

I upgraded devices from a cheapy Puff brand device to a Nautilis mini. The last time I smoked a cig, 10 days ago, I got an Atlantis tank and a box mod that could power it. That was good timing because the money spent sharpened my focus and the Atlantis is so superior for taste and the quality of the vape that my other gear is relegated to backups. I let myself run out of cigs and haven't gotten more.

I think often about having a cigarette but there are none at hand and it seems easy to resist buying a pack. Vaping is not a perfect substitute for smoking but if the equipment and liquids are right it's enough distraction so I feel very little pressure to get more cigarettes.

The way I see it, I'm not "quitting", I'm taking control. At the moment I have 100% control but 80% was pretty impressive too. Sofarsogood.

If I remember my battery safety reading correctly that first battery at .5v on the multimeter is toast. I do not think it can or should be recharged. I think I read that a battery that goes under 2.5v won't charge on the Nitecore chargers. But go look it up to make sure. I do not know enough to advise on 2nd battery. I am a chicken and would toss it but that is me.

eth - thank you
You are right, 30A.

I did fix the problem, but I had heard that once you get a battery that hot, the internal chemistry is compromised resulting in higher chance of failure in the future. But if I am safe, I will keep them.

W/out giving all the innumerable details of the story -
>rewick (kept same coil)
>battery overheats
>wet 510 scenario
>assume wet 510 is source of issue, dry, new battery, refire
>also heats up
>discover loose screw situation
(the center screw also holds that half of the mounting base in place. It had become loose, leaving half of the mount loose. The springiness of the coil had pulled the loose mount up into itself, making direct connection between coil and mount across the whole surface of the coil.)

I do have a tester, which I SHOULD have used after the first short. But seeing the wet 510, I assumed that was the problem. And you know what they say, assumption is the mother of all fu......mistakes. :)

I did not know you could diagnose a battery with a tester. I mean I knew you could see how much charge is left, but didn't know such info could tell you if an overheated battery was still viable.
I just had heard overheated batteries are compromised batteries.
The second battery is fine
The first battery is only showing .5v. So does that one get tossed or recharged?

Yeah, the .5 is toast. I am disposing of that one. The other one seems to be fine. Holding a charge. Staying above 3 volts. The second one got just a little hot. The first one was the really bad one.

Hi all. I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

I have read some great ideas on how to travel with your Provari and gear. Now I would love to hear some ideas and opinions on how (and if I should) get my Provari into a hospital room for my stay after surgery.

I found out right before Thanksgiving that I will be having my 3rd multi level cervical fusion surgery in January with all the bells and whistles of plates and screws. A few days in the hospital. Then 3 months later I get to go back in the hospital for a longer stay to have another multi level fusion on my back, again with the plates and screws, etc. and a longer stay. Not fun and not happy about it. I could not talk the neurosurgeon into throwing in a bo@b job or a tummy tuck; I tried. lol Though it would be a waste on an old lady but thought I would give it a try and attempt to make dr laugh so I would not cry.

So, am I nuts to try to take my Provari and r91 to the hospital with me? I do have a Vision Spinner I could take instead and a couple of 510 attys but dripping is not very stealthy. I do not want my precious to be stolen or confiscated, but I want to vape so I do not go nuts.

What would be a good atty/tank to put on the Spinner if I do not want to chance taking the Provari and r91? My mind is not working properly to think this through. Comments would be appreciated.

Shari, when I had my heart catheter I brought my ego and a clearo with me for the 3 hour hold after the procedure.

I would suggest the spinner with a neck lanyard and an i30, simply because of the swivel drip tip, it makes vaping when laying down much easier.

Also, the i30 is a pretty rock solid clearo. I dropped mine from my lap sitting and onto the step a few feet below (stainless steel) and bounced it off the welded aluminum fuel tank... not even a scratch.

Not a huge tank capacity, but its enough to keep up with an r91 for vape time... just not flavor.

Best of luck on the surgery!

Thanks etherealink. I know I will come up with something. My brain is just in a fog this past week. I am using up all my energy to try to keep myself calm.

I do think it is kind of funny that I do not have any urge to smoke but this panic of not being able to vape reminds me exactly of how I felt if I could not smoke for a couple of days.

The last time I had surgery in 2008 (for my 2nd cervical fusion) I had been smoke free for 6 months and I had 3 cigarettes on the way to the hospital. That lead me to almost 5 years of back to smoking 2 packs a day when I got out of the hospital before I found vaping. Just a little scared that I may repeat history. I do not think I will do that this time but the fear is there.

Here's the short answer for both of you... if you use drop-in batteries that have to be charged outside the mod you need to have a way to have a multimeter and know how to use it. If you have the money for it get an auto ranging meter, then you only need to set it on resistance or voltage to get your info.
Yeah, the .5 is toast. I am disposing of that one. The other one seems to be fine. Holding a charge. Staying above 3 volts. The second one got just a little hot. The first one was the really bad one.
Good idea Tim. If you have a battery that gets hot like that you need to let it rest for an hour or so on something non flammable and give it time to cool down. Also, if your batteries stop charging fully (4.2v) you should check them and your charger (both can be tested with a multimeter).

Most batteries have an average lifespan of around 1,000 charges or so before the performance of them starts to drop off, and it mainly starts with the charge time dropping off and they will die off quicker. Some new chargers do multiple tests both before and during testing to help ensure battery life, charging and safety. Check out the Nitecore D2 and D4 for ideas.

Also, Baditude is hard to get in touch with, but check out his blog here on ECF as well as the flashlight modder and rc car modder blogs for more info on lipo cells. For now, here is a Google doc with some interesting info:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...0dSc01mUkl6RXNnM2o2R1E&usp=docslist_api&pli=1

Also Tim, keep in mind that any time your entire positive pin is moving it can be damaging the insulator around the positive pin and that alone will do very bad things to your battery and other important things. Make sure that of you have to tighten that positive pin under the deck that you pull the pin and check the insulator. If your entire build spins when you tighten a screw you should check the positive pin/post that makes the 510 connection. It doesn't need to be crunched down super tight, just snugged up.

That goes for all tanks and rba's too. The screw-in coils for things like protank and hand made coils for the r91/Kayfun fans. If your connections are not snug and insulators, they will arc and short and bad things happen.
If I remember my battery safety reading correctly that first battery at .5v on the multimeter is toast. I do not think it can or should be recharged. Shari, good memory on the 2.5v thing, I have pulled them back from as low as 2.3v but that battery is no longer used in high power applications.

Here's the deal, the difference between the batteries used for sub-ohm vaping and "normal" vaping (like the Provari) are minor, but the basics are that the sub-ohm batteries are "high drain" which more or less means that they can dump a huge amount of current (as amperage) through the circuit (your atty and coil build or heads) versus the much lower amount of current pulled at one-time-per-fire of a 10 amp battery (or similar).

The lower amperage rating means that the battery is designed to be stable at that amperage draw continuously (not forever, but think 10 seconds roughly) without having a critical failure. The higher amperage rating means basically the same thing but not quite; the energy transfer becomes higher and that means that more heat is created as that happens (also the reason the "cold cranking" amps are higher on car batteries, they function more efficient when not heated above a certain range).

The so-called "protected" batteries have different styles of protection in them to try and make them more safe for the average consumer, but they should never be interpreted as fail-proof even if they are in a regulated mod... my SVD had a battery short due to a bad insulator and it almost cost me a battery and a mod.

Remember, these batteries are not designed for what we use them for and they are the equivalent of the lighters we all used to pack multiples of when we smoked. Use some caution and you will be fine, forget to be careful and it can go very bad, very fast.

Not to worry Shari. Get a step up of the nic you normally use and use the spinner. I can send you some unflavored at whatever percentage to blend in with your adv if you would like.

I'd recommend a cartotank; some folks think the locking ring on a Smok UDCT is "too much trouble" but if you're in any kind of pain-killer haze, it could be useful, to keep you from dumping ejuice all over yourself, since you won't be moving very fast after all that. Vapor Kings has both the standard and slender (which would work great on the Spinner) Smok cartotanks for $6. The dual-coil cartos aren't great; IBtanked has single-coil cartos for $1.50, or $1.35 if you order at least 10.

I don't know of a single clearo that's worth recommending; my other suggestion wouild be to get an inexpensive mod like a Vamo to put under the r91. Or actually, an iTaste vv3 -- it looks like a scepter under a kayfun or other 22mm tank, but it does work, very well, and that would cut down on complexity, being able to simply recharge the vv3, rather than having to deal with batteries -- or maybe an iStick, though those run hot and would need to be turned down from your usual setting, to get the same vape. I don't blame you for not wanting to take your Provari, those are very costly and if you're in/out of the room for xrays, procedures, etc (besides the long surgery) then you just have no idea who might go pilfering thru your room.

Hate to hear about all that surgery, but maybe it will be helpful; it sounds like you must be in a lot of pain now, to need surgeries like that, so I hope it will help you get to pain-free!

Id check with the hospital. They might have lumped vaping into the tobacco free policy and not supposed to use on hospital grounds (or this is how it is in Illinois)

If you are in a private recovery room id say ask your nurse if they mind and try to bring a flavor that either smells good in the air or unflavored.

Or just make alot of trips to bathroom to vape there (should have shower in your bathroom meaning no smoke detector, or one that wont be set off by vapor since a hot shower would set it off if it was that kind). Maybe blow vapor towards the drain in the floor, into the shower, or into the sink?

Thanks for your kind words. I need to hear that stuff right now. I am freaked out and scared and in a mind fog. And a lot of pain but not taking much painkillers, can't afford to be out of it right now. After surgery - keep 'em coming. I do not do pain well. Or fear. There will never be no pain, per the neurosurgeon, no matter what he does. I am just worried about moving my head and walking and driving. If I can't do those, why bother.

I have a silly, unexplained fear of carto tanks. I can not explain it. I had no problem taking on learning how to build a coil and wicking a r91 and kayfun but talk of carto tanks sends a chill down my spine. lol I will think about what things may work for me.

What I need is some kind of a drip system where I can set up a 60ml bottle of juice and it feeds down into a 510 atty. Then I only have to change the bottle once a week. Can someone design me one of those? Yes, I am nuts. lol

If I can walk, I will go outside to vape, and drag all my iv setup with me. I have no problem stealth vaping if I am in room alone. I would not subject someone else to my vapor. I will be in a surgical ward. I may spend most of my stay out cold on pain meds so I may be obsessing over a non issue.

I am getting plates and screws and bone grafts so maybe they will keep me knocked out. No clue and doctor is not saying. Probably does not want to scare me off. They wanted to do the surgery on the 18th before Christmas. I rescheduled for January 15th. No way would I have surgery a week before Christmas while everyone is sipping on eggnog and recovering from Christmas parties and just longing for the holiday.

Id check with the hospital. They might have lumped vaping into the tobacco free policy and not supposed to use on hospital grounds (or this is how it is in Illinois)

Actually I've found my UDCT to be absolutely amazingly trouble-free and almost entirely fiddle-free -- I change my carto about every 3-4 days, when the taste starts going "off," but I don't think others change cartos that often -- I'm just picky, and I've noticed that when a carto is towards the end of its useful life, it starts leaving little dark-brown ejuice drips on the battery-post of whatever mod, so i take that as my cue to change it, even if the taste is still ok. But other than the carto-changing, the thing is an absolute jewel of "just fill and vape." I've used mine pretty much continuously since July 25 when I got back to smoke-free, and in all that time I've had ONE dud carto.

But, if that's not your idea of a good vape, then something like an iTaste vv3, an iStick, or possibly a Vamo, to be able to use your r91 and not have to take your precious to the hospital at all. I think you can get any of the above for $25 (the iTaste) to $30-$35, though of course the Vamo uses removable batteries, another complexity that maybe would be better dispensed with, in the hospital -- hence the suggestion of the iTaste/iStick.

I dunno... I've been recommending this thread a lot, for those still struggling with the coffin nails.

I saw my asthma doc yesterday. He was appropriately impressed that I managed to quit smoking not just once, but TWICE (after my surgery and related difficulties) using e-cigs. I think he's a convert.

He also gave me some free samples of this new asthma maintenance drug called Dulera, and that stuff is miraculous; I'm back to no-wheeze and not-breathless! So now, REALLY loving the vaping!!!
