form a legal standpoint the cop thought you were using an illegal substance so he did have probable cause to detain you and question you. he could even search you if you refused. in that situation playing along was probably the best bet unless you were willing to be cuffed, searched, put in a police car, and possibly taken downtown and charged with some bull****. if you wanted to fight for your rights you coulda gave him your name which is required in most states. after that ask him if you were being detained or if you were free to go. if he does not state which keep asking till you get an answer. if he tells you that you are being detained tell him you reserve your rights and will remain silent. they would take you downtown and eventually release you unless they find a bogus charge to hit you with like loitering, jaywalking, etc. you DO NOT have to answer any question besides giving your name. you CAN remain silent. you CAN ask them questions which they MUST answer. the one asking the questions is in control. if they take you downtown they may confiscate your PV for further testing or harass you in many other ways. if you dont play nice they wont play nice. it may suck to let a police officer abuse your rights but in the end you must pick your battles. its not surprising my first post is in a thread like this

Here's a random thought...

Give the cops a break, do what they ask you to do, and you'll go home quickly.
Their job is much harder than yours, and sucks at least seven times more than yours.

And that's not even mentioning the fact that their life is on the line all day long, every day.

On the other hand, if you have something to hide, then you get what you deserve.
I guess getting what you deserve bothers some people.

I don't like people that don't like cops.

my job can be much harder than thiers. MUCH HARDER

u've never been harrassed by cops!!!...(u must live in La Jolla or scripps)

i dont not like cops as people... i dont like being picked on. DO you?

U shouldnt generalize people because of their personal preference of the police. i know great men and women that dont like the police for various reasons. none of them are criminals ("have something to hide" in your words). but i guess you dont like them....

i'll bite my tounge ....

BTW.... GO CHARGERS!!!!!!!

(To a woman) "Take off your shirt"

Yep, this has happened in NJ. Not to me obviously, since I'm a guy, but to women here. So.... you want them to just do that and then they can go home quickly?

There is right, and there is wrong. When an officer is right, yes, when an officer is wrong, f no.

Their job is much harder than yours, and sucks at least seven times more than yours.

And that's not even mentioning the fact that their life is on the line all day long, every day.

The worst cops are in the suburbs. Their lives aren't exactly "on the line". In fact, in one town, the greatest danger to a cop has been.... themselves. I'm serious. Cops there have put themselves in the hospital by crashing their car, falling when they ran into a house, etc.

The last time a cop's life was in danger from a criminal there was 40 years ago.

On the other hand, if you have something to hide, then you get what you deserve.

Sorry, couldn't hear you there on your high horse.

Rape and destruction of civil rights are "what you deserve"? Sorry to tell you this, but if you step inside of reality for a minute, those things do happen. There are cops out there that abuse their position.

Just because you want to bend over for them doesn't mean the rest of us should, regardless of circumstance.

I don't like people that don't like cops.

I don't like people that can't understand that there are good cops and bad cops. Here's a clue. Keep it. It might do you some good in the future.

Have you ever met a crackhead? I have and let me tell
I am absolutely not anti-police.

It certainly sounds like you are. How the hell do you think this cop crossed the line? He calmly followed standard procedure. I guess maybe you think cops in general have too much leeway, and not this one, but I still think that's crazy.

Police officers risk their lives every day they're on the job to keep you safe, to take people off the streets that could endanger you, and you think calmly asking someone who he was suspicious of to put their hands behind their head (not cuffed, not chest-to-wall, nothing) is infringing on your American rights?

Try and put yourself in the shoes of a cop. I'd fully expect to be detained in some way if a police officer suspected me of drug or weapon possession. As long as no further force was used after questioning, seems pretty good to me.

Sorry if I went off on you a little here, but a cop not taking the necessary precautions with someone even one time could lead to their death when all they were trying to do was feed their family and keep the streets safe.

And SLDS, do you really think your town is the whole country? You don't think cops who work in Camden or Philly need to put their lives on the line to some extent to do their jobs successfully? Also, I don't think anybody is fine with a cop abusing their position, but I don't think there was any abuse here.

Dude, everybody with a brain understands there are good cops and bad cops.

Just like there are good nurses and bad nurses, good newspaper editors and bad newspaper editors, good mechanics and bad mechanics, good priests and bad priests, and I really hope I don't need to go on with that list, the picture is pretty clear.

But anyone that randomly hates all cops in general just because they are cops is a ..........

Of course I've been harrassed by cops.
I used to sell drugs a long time ago, and I used to have an attitude about authority as well.

I've been harrassed by the cops a number of times.
I've come within a breath of getting my head blown clean off my shoulders.

I don't believe I was ever picked on.
But I imagine you have had different experiences than I have.

Maybe I wasn't being clear due to being angry with the cop bashing.
But I didn't mean to say there were no bad cops.

Although I don't understand why anyone who has nothing to hide would dislike all police.

But I did like they way you generalized that I must not have ever been harrassed.
And then I like how you took that extra step to generalize where I must live.
:D

Its not my town, actually. I said one town I know of. The point is, blanket statements are asinine. Not every cop puts his life on the line every day. Not every cop is a good cop. Blindly following in either direction, either complete ...-kissing or baseless hatred, is really damn stupid.

I don't think there was abuse in this situation either. I said so in reply to the OP. I was replying to Deadcat's poorly worded statements.

But anyone that randomly hates all cops in general just because they are cops is a ..........

Then say it like that. Otherwise its you that ends up looking like a ..........

I am unwilling to debate politics on this forum. All that political discussions on this forum accomplish is drawing a line between people who should be united. I have already deferred my position on this matter. I am not sure what else you are looking for? Jim is ok with it and it happened to him so: our opinions on this issue do not matter.
