The issues I see with directly dipping / coating the SS wick in glass are:
* It will, at least to some extent, block the webbing and cause it to not wick as well.
* It will leave a very thin layer of glass that would, regardless of how carefully you handled it, crack and flake off at least a little...especially at the margin where the glass coating stopped (it would probably be hyper thin there). vaping glass just doesn't sound healthy.

Just a guess, but I'd say that doing the baking soda treatment to the wick would block a lot of the mesh...and I guarantee that I'm no more than 100% wrong on that :).

Got the enameled nichrome today (29 gage) and just did my first few experiments and it works great so far. Raw SS wick (no torching, just roll and drop in) and measured out about 2 ohms worth of wire. Not a single short or hot spot, and I was really sloppy with it. The taste is cleaner and it vapes like a master champion. I can't say at this point if it will hold up or - fingers crossed - I won't wake up with my throat swollen shut.
I have a suspicion the oxidation process impedes the wicking action enough to notice.

EDIT: Forgot to note that I didn't do a dry burn. It was too late to test the melting point of the coating ...

Dang, how did I miss your original post on this wire. If it holds up without flaking off, that is a great find.

Cool man let us know when you get a chance to dry burn it and see how that coating holds up

Lunch was trip to the Vet and Micheal's
- Couple of 14 gauge needles for some dual helix action
- Aunt Lydia's Bamboo thread to try and use for some testing
- Wire, Crimp Tubes, and micro crimping pliers

Between this and all my RC stuff I think I'm going to be on the next episode of hoarders :D

I was gona pick up some fo the bamboo thread too, I hear good things. Even if you have to replace it more often its cheap and easy to get.

Ok just got one put together.. Wrapped around a fuse glass body..

Lots of vapor coming out the top but not much it seems when I put the top back on my bliss.. I am using 2 strands of cotton going through the tube... Need to do some adjusting I suppose..

The fuse is a Christmas light fuse..

The #10 bamboo thread works quite well, but it's basically that, pretty thin thread. Kind of hard to work with unless you braid the strands. I have like 275 yards of it I can spare if anyone wants to try it. :) I'm serious, but it is rather cheap to buy. I think it was 300yds for $3.

Thanks for the offer TBinAZ I appreciate it, but I did pick some up today at hobby lobby. Its Aunt Lydia's #3 100% Viscose from Bamboo, I hope its the right stuff. Its not the same thing pictured when I looked it up but I figured its pretty much the same thing :)
