The issues I see with directly dipping / coating the SS wick in glass are:
* It will, at least to some extent, block the webbing and cause it to not wick as well.
* It will leave a very thin layer of glass that would, regardless of how carefully you handled it, crack and flake off at least a little...especially at the margin where the glass coating stopped (it would probably be hyper thin there). vaping glass just doesn't sound healthy.
Just a guess, but I'd say that doing the baking soda treatment to the wick would block a lot of the mesh...and I guarantee that I'm no more than 100% wrong on that
