Cloud, your idea sounds a lot like a glass fuse that heats rather than protects. Perhaps the base completes the ground (surrounding mesh included in the circuit), and the positive is something like a fuse socket coming off the positive post. Not sure if you ever saw pailpoe's design for using mesh for resistance wire, but something like that, only the mesh wont reach the positive post.

Like the indent connection idea. Allows for pulling the assembly out without have to take the tank off.
I was picturing a fuse type design but with only a selective area (above the tank base) as the heating element area. I wish I had ordered smaller tubing (~1mm) since I could then use a single filament of K-A1 38awg instead of twisting the resistance wire. Not sure if this idea will work on all types of attys, but the DID has negative grounding through out the entire tank structure (SS top, SS bottom and SS center tube - even body if using the SS tank body).
Lowes has the Rust-Oleum high-temperature paint. ~$5. There is a glossy and a flat. The gloss is about +$3 over the flat. The flat come in black, white and silver as I recall. 1200 degrees F. There is also engine paint for up to 2000 degrees F...+$3. I went for the less expensive. It clearly indicates on the label "Enamel" and don't use on 'surfaces where you'll put food,' like the grille grates themselves. The gloss version, also 1200 F does not say enamel, but is otherwise undifferentiated from the flat. The label also indicates that upon initial use it may give off some 'harmless fumes.' I plan on baking it well with a heat gun.

I've got the rod wrapped with an estimated 3 layers of aluminum foil. It's a little cool out, so I've got it set up under the range hood in the kitchen (bachelor perk!). I've sprayed 2 heavy layers of the hi-temp coating and will do a third...then the heat gun.
Note: The foil will easily slide on the SS rod. This may be problematic when it comes to wrapping it with the coil. Also, it seems (can't see it that well) that the paint (as it dries?) may be causing some unraveling/distortion of the foil. After the third coat, I'll examine it more closely.

Not to be a downer. However paint can take a week plus to cure fully depending on thickness. That being said it is still toxic until full cure has taken place. Please take all precautions and be careful. Please let's all live healthy since that is the point of vaping instead of smoking.

Ok, guys, I just heard back from Jack at TGP. I will have 8' of 2mm ID x 3mm OD FQ coming in a few days. Jack is donating the tubing for our testing. I think I mentioned that he is a good guy. 
If future group buys occur, then all I ask is that we go with TGP.
So any of you who have placed a small order, and haven't received a shipment notice yet want to hold off and see if these will work for you, then I would suggest contacting TGP as soon as possible. Once your order ships, the tube cannot be returned for a refund, even if unused.
I will do my best to get the samples out pronto. It will be a couple of days before I receive it. I will be bubble wrapping and sending in normal envelope to try and keep the shipping cost to a minimum. I need to clean out my PMs a bit, so don't start flooding me just yet. LOL. I will let you know later today when to start sending me your info. I plan to send 2 15mm pieces to each, or a single 30mm depending on who wants what. So that should be enough to accommodate as much as 75 or so orders. If I don't receive that many orders, then I will offer up larger lengths of what is left for a nominal price to offset shipping. Thanks for the words of caution. My experiment is thus far a Fail. The paint/aluminum interface is such that the paint doesn't stick well enough for any handling. I did manage to get a 1/4" or so sleeve wrapped with a loose coil. By the time it was fully installed in the atty (Smoktech RBI), half the paint was off the foil. Hotwire!

Did you say you had a brass tube? could you try using the paint on the tube itself and see if that is enough insulation to make a wrap using the tube as a base? Maybe scratch it up first to help the first layer stick. Brass is pretty heat conductive and if its insulated it may work better then the glass.. Or just paint the wire itself
Brass tubing that I currently have is a bit large for the purpose, though I suppose I could test it for surface adherence of the paint. Yes, a good idea to 'rough it up a bit,' perhaps with steel wool or sandpaper. I'll see what I can do. I almost went looking for proper sized tubing today.

I am a consumer in the e-cigarette realm. Many of us use Kanthal products in winding our own wick and coil assemblies. Typically used are 28 to 34 ga. resistance wire with a target coil resistance of 1.5 to 4 Ohms. Voltages are usually in the rage of 3 to 6 Volts.
A favored type of wick is made from fine stainless steel mesh which is rolled to a diameter of approximately 3/32". A difficulty with SS mesh is that it is conductive when substituted for fabric type wicks (silica, cotton and such). The SS mesh must be treated in order to oxidize the surface so that the Kanthal which is wound around it won't connect to it. This is difficult to achieve regularly and uniformly.
I see Kanthal offers various coatings for wire products. Useful to users of e-cigarettes would be coatings which would be able to withstand the range of power (sometimes exceeding 12 Watts) and be non-toxic. As well, coils are at times, 'dry-burned.' This is heating the coils until they burn off deposits from the e-liquids used.
Of course e-cigarettes are a circumstance where toxicity is of concern.
Perhaps this is an application for which Kanthal can offer an appropriate electrically insulating coating for products useful in this realm.
