But, hey you talked about gently sniffing as opposed to snorting it into your sinuses..I was like whaaat? There's not too many lady like ways to be asking what needed to be asked rofl

Not sure I'll ever try the snuff myself, but it made for some interesting reading and research! :p

I tried it about 20 years ago, it was alright then...but all this talk has got me itching to try some of those fancy new flavors. I bet I'd like it a lot better now that I'm all gung-ho about any kind of tobacco that isn't smoked.

I got my free-sample pack today, I tried the "dry white mini" and it was burning the inside of my mouth within minutes, I tried to move it around some place else and then it just grossed me out.

Wildsky- you might want to give it another try, I remember having some of those same reactions with the first pouch or two. That was many, many tins ago!

Or try the dissolvables (Stonewall's) it's just a little tablet that will dissolve. It's more like a piece of hard candy and like TBob has said before the Java is delicious!! If you like coffee, I don't know..can't imagine not liking these even if you weren't a coffee lover!

Welcome to the club ladies! I know quite a few others on this forum who use also. :thumb:

Thanks,
Julie

Thanks Nico,

I am right now trying my first snus from my free sample pack from getsnus...I picked the winter green to try first from you guys suggestion ( didnt want my very first one to be horrid lol)... My initial reaction was just like wilds... ..It said to insert under top lip..It's not a small pouch...So I tried flattening it down a lil under my lip..Thats when the fire started lol

I thought, ok i can handle this...4 seconds go buy> oh h*ll nooo lol.. so I moved to the other side..Same fire... But I found if you move it to the side starting like right behind your eye tooth..The fire lessons...After about 5-10 mins its movable without fire...

I got a free sample of the dissolvables too...I plan on trying all three...so far the winter green is nice...I dont think I could handle one thats much more salty..This flavor is doable...I still kind of have the urge to grab my e-cig...But my lip feels to swollen to worry much about it lol...Although, I looked in the mirror and you really cant see it...

I dont think I would do this at work..I laugh and smile far too much with my clients...And I'm far too vain lol....I can see it now... ohhh, so sorry Mrs Jackson... here let me pick that up lmao

Seriously wild.. the fire is all gone now lol

Hey Sheila, can you get the Ariva at the Getsnus site too? Is it a disolvable or snus?

What a great thread! I love all of you trying much less harmful alternatives to cigarettes.

On snus portions .. I never put them under the upper lip. That location is specified by the "pros" to minimize saliva production when using a pris of loose snus. With pouches (portions), tuck one left or right, out of sight.

With my most recent order from Northerner, I got a snuff bullet of Zuka Zee, which is said to be a grape/menthol flavor. I detect only menthol, but the stuff is wonderful. I rarely do much nasal snuff on any given day, but I've been using this little plastic bullet all day. Love the stuff. Bullet is the only way to go, I now think. No back of the hand to leave brown stains on your nose. No pinching that gets tobacco under fingernails. No straws (OMG). No spoons. Just use the bullet in each nostril.

The Zuka bullet looks like a Vicks Inhaler once I took the label off! If you order snus from Northerner, I'd suggest throwing in a bullet of this really cheap nasal snuff ($3 or so).

ahh got it sheila... thanks

I knew that upper lips thing was just not right..Thanks bob lol...Yep Im gonna try it all..

Razor~I use my portions under the upper lip, pretty far back..several teeth past the eye tooth. I'm definately no pro, I just didn't like how soggy it got using it in lower lip. You'll get used to it and it won't feel so bulky after a few days or so. I actually had one in at the grocery store today, and my nickname is "Smiley" cause I always have a grin on my face. No accidents yet. :)

Cowgal~I've not tried the Stonewall's Natural. Don't even care so much for the Wintergreen anymore..not after tasting Java, got a 5 pack of it from rollyourown.com. Let us know if you try it.

Bob~or any of you guys tried the Natural?

Those prices are more than the genuinetobacco site that Sheila posted. Just an FYI. I think the prices are almost double by the look of it.

I have tried the so called "Natural" and do not care for that flavor at all compared to "Java." Unfortunately, due to THIS CAPER I now have enough of them to supply Latvia and half of Swaziland, so I'm open to offers for trades.

LOL... I read that when you posted it. Lucky dog. I'll PM you for a trade of a 20-pack, or a sheet of 10 just to see if I like it or not.

I'm embarrassed :oops:to say I have never heard of snus.

After a bit of research--it all makes sense now.

"I suppose you could argue that shooting yourself in the leg poses less of a health risk than shooting yourself in the head," a former president of the American Dental Association, Dr. D. Gregory Chadwick, said. "But do we really need to have that discussion?"

--
For decades, public health advocates have championed harm reduction for people who cannot stop taking health risks - or do not want to. Needle exchange is a classic example. Intravenous drug users get clean needles because, the reasoning goes, contracting and spreading AIDS is worse than making ...... use a little easier.

But harm reduction for hard-core smokers is another matter. It is politically incorrect.

At issue is a form of smokeless tobacco, a popular Swedish product called snus (rhymes with loose) that satisfies smokers' nicotine addiction with negligible health risks of its own. But to many foes of smoking, it is not a lifesaver, but the devil's instrument.

Snus, moist oral tobacco, comes in a tiny tea bag. It sits discreetly between lip and gum, releasing nicotine. Because it does not stimulate saliva production, there is no spitting. Even better, there is no smoke.

"It is the tobacco smoke, with its thousands of toxic agents, that leads to cancer, heart disease and emphysema," says Dr. Brad Rodu, an oral pathologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Eliminate the smoke, and you significantly reduce the risk. Indeed, Dr. Rodu found that a 35-year-old snus user will live on average as long as a 35-year-old who quits nicotine altogether - eight years longer than a smoker. Snus, or snuff, is especially attractive to smokers - who crave nicotine - because it produces nicotine levels comparable to smoking. Other nicotine replacement products like gum and the patch administer too little nicotine to prevent reliably craving and withdrawal symptoms.

The health benefits are impressive. Forty percent of Swedish men use tobacco products, and that is also the rate for men in the other 14 countries in the European Union. Yet Sweden has the lowest rate of lung cancer by far. Why? Largely because of snus, which represents half of all the tobacco that Swedish men use. (The other half smoke.)

Snus has not caught on with female smokers, though, and they make a morbid comparison group, ranking fifth, behind Denmark, Norway, Britain and the Netherlands.

Smoking opponents, one could argue, should herald snus. But instead, the very notion of harm reduction seems to inflame them.

"It's like trying to play God trading oral cancer for lung cancer," said Dr. Gregory Connolly of the Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program.

More than 20 epidemiological studies show that smokeless tobacco is far safer than cigarettes for mouth cancer. Even traditional smokeless tobacco products bring one-third to one-half the risk as smoking.

Users of Swedish snus, which contains very low levels of tobacco-specific nitrosamines, the carcinogens that cause lung cancer, among other diseases, incur a risk of developing oral cancer that is no greater than nonsmokers'.

The five large studies that examine snus in relation to oral cancer "are consistent in finding no increased cancer risk," according to an article last year in the journal Tobacco Control.

What about gateway effects? Clearly, if using smokeless tobacco turns people on to nicotine and they "graduate" to smoking, it fails as a public health strategy.

This was not the case in Sweden, however.

If snus induced young people to smoke, then Sweden would be expected to have a poor record of smoking reduction. Instead it has the best record in Europe.

Moreover, the proportion of current smokers who are former snus users is far less than the proportion of snus users who were once smokers.

In short, snus has largely been a pathway away from smoking, not vice versa. In the United States, Dr. Lynn T. Kozlowski of the biobehavioral health department at Penn State, found that more than three-fourths of men from 18 to 34 who used smokeless tobacco never went beyond it to cigarettes or had used cigarettes before using smokeless products.

Swedish snus and other brands of smokeless tobacco like Ariva, Exalt and Revel are available in this country but are hard to find. Most smokers have never heard of them, and many doctors are unfamiliar with the products.

The government, rather than clearing the air, is muddying it. Last year, the surgeon general, Vice Adm. Richard H. Carmona of the Navy, told Congress, "There is no significant scientific evidence that suggests smokeless tobacco is a safer alternative to cigarettes."

This is quite simply wrong in the case of smokeless tobacco in general, and snus in particular.

A set of "Tips for Teens" from the Department of Health and Human Services answers the question, "Isn't smokeless tobacco safer to use than cigarettes?" with an emphatic - and erroneous - "no."

"I suppose you could argue that shooting yourself in the leg poses less of a health risk than shooting yourself in the head," a former president of the American Dental Association, Dr. D. Gregory Chadwick, said. "But do we really need to have that discussion?"

Yes, we do. Public health experts have for years endorsed harm reduction as a pragmatic last resort for hard-core users of ......, ....... and alcohol, because the experts are convinced of the relative safety that accrues to the user and society.

No one disputes that quitting is optimal. But in the real world, that is not practical in every case. Snus in particular, and smokeless tobacco in general, provide clear, lifesaving advantages over smoking that antitobacco activists refuse to acknowledge.

I was told to quit analogs immediately due to copd and know it wouldn't have been possible without these "tobacco harm reduction" strategies. The benefits by FAR outweigh the risks as compared to smoking. Just too bad those anti-smoking groups can't get it through their thick heads that we ARE trying to do something about our cigarettes and we ARE giving them clean air by vaping/snussing instead. What's so hard to understand?

Wow.

Ladies asking about snus and snuff?
Lots of great tips and tricks?
Everyone civilized and helpful?
And yet, no one singing Kumbaya?

Heck, am I in the right forum?
Am I on the right planet?

:D

Meanwhile, back at the ranch...

As far as where you put your snus, (focus, Elwin, focus..), when I first started snusing, I too got an uncomfortable burn from using the upper lip.
But I think that that was because the mints and wintergreens that most of us start with are naturally strong - and irritating. And especially since that area between the upper lip and gum are the most protected and least used parts of our mouths.
But after a bit, you build up a tolerance, and now, I actually like that ZING I get when I pop a portion in the top.

To me, it's kind of like the "throat hit" from an E-cig. At first, it was uncomfortable, but now it something I actually look forward to. Both in my E-smoking and my snusing.

:)
