My heavy duty 10 hrs a day machine finally had a LM2596 failure. A 3.5 ohm at 6 v shorted. Installed a new regulator in 10mins, just solder four corners and a couple of drops of hot glue to hold it in. Added some vent holes in the back for TLC. Ordered 6 more at this price.

Thanks BJ43 for posting about your mod here on ECF! I wanting to build my first mod which will also be a VV with voltage indicator but without USB connection/passthru.

Does the LM2596 use a switching or linear voltage regulator? It does state the following on the eBay listing:

Conversion efficiency: Up to 92% (output voltage higher, the higher the efficiency)
Switching Frequency: 150KHz

My understanding is that it is switching. There are several more efficient models being used but much more expensive. These have worked excellent for me.

Here is my LM2596 PT with a 2.2 ohm coil (2.6 - .4 ohms in the meter). The Vin is 12.7 and drops to 12.5 under load. The voltage to the coil is 4.7 and drops to 4.6 under load. Not bad for a $2.20 preassembled regulator.

Not quite what you are looking for, but I like your idea of an internal ohm meter. If this was a little smaller, I might think about it. Check it out though. I think I am going to wait to do my next mod and see if I can find something like this smaller.

The only thing I would like for it to be a great laboratory is an internal ohm meter. Have not been able to find one. Looking at a pencil multimeter to see if I can mount it into the box. Don't know where provari gets theirs.

Playing around with a new battery, high discharge 3 cell 11.1v li-po 850. Modding a snap-on battery box for when I am not near one of my 12v sources. This could also be my first permanent battery in a mod that would charge through the source in plug and have the equalizing plug pop out when you need it for charging. The last pic is the equalizing charger.

Charged the new battery and when I plugged it to my mod box at 8am it showed 12.4v. Now at 6PM 10 hrs later after heavy vaping on a 2.4ohm coil at 4.8v, the battery is still strong at 11.3v. I would have been into my second set of 14500 after 7 to 8hrs. I am really liking this battery and it is small enough for modding.

HobbyKing R/C Hobby Store : HobbyKing E4 Balance Charger

This balancing charger is small enough that the electronics will fit in a reasonable size box. In the picture I want to put everything from the two items on the right into a box like the one on the left. In the new mod, when I plug in my 12v source it would be split into two independent circuits, one going to the regulator to power the coil and another to the battery charger. The battery charger would be set at 100 mA so it would not be a big drain on my 5 amp source.

do you have a parts list and where you got the parts????? I have found the buck, atty 510, disply, I'm sure i can find a couple of switches at Radio shack thaty I like, and the 2x18650 holder, but the plastic outside box that everything goes in is giving me reoubls. Mad vapes has some but they are too small.. Oh and the "dial" in the Volt adjust what is that????

what is the difference between the square module and the rectangular module. They have similar descriptions.
new DC-DC IN 3-30V OUT 1.3V-18V converter Module board | eBay
LM2596 DC Step-Down Adjustable Converter Power Module

This is my first mod... so bare with me.

I have 2 outputs(usb port and 510) and 2-3 inputs (int batt, ext bat, 12v5a plug) how do I isolate the iputs sources from one another. I thin I can wire the VV module to main switch then to V display, then to either another switch that selects between the usb or atty, or just remove atty. but do I need to do something special to the power sources?

They are exactly the same electronics but the square is larger because it has the wire plugs installed it is a plug and play. I used the square on my first mod but since then use the smaller for space reasons and just solder the in and out at the four corners
