I got about 22 years out of the cedar that I'm replacing with very little maintenance. Living in the boondocks you don't have to impress the neighbors so you can let it go a lot longer. Besides at 72, I'm figuring time is on my side. lol
Hit, I have the same feeling toward grass. I had it looking real good for the last big party I'll ever have before the one I through instead of a funeral. The woods keep decreasing my lawn size and the grass has now given way to some form of weed that has covered it. It's not crabgrass but, left go, it grows to a good foot or so high. If I were to do the verticutter thing. I'd get something that I could tow behind my mower. I'm too beat up to get beat up doing anything but processing firewood.
