How does one pull up the post? Needle nose pliers?

You just gently nudge it up with either a small eyeglass screw driver or even a paper clip. Be careful though, that you don't un-seat it from the bottom. It just needs to be nudged up a mm or 2.

I use a small flat head screw driver. Like this: A PBusardo Tutorial - How to Pull Your Post ;-) - YouTube

Thanks once again. Don't have any problems 3 weeks in but wanted to know for future reference.

Seems like post issues are quite common (not only to zmax) - is it that hard to make them spring loaded? What about the provari? Are the posts fixed as well?

Not as susceptible to being squeezed in, but it does give if you continuously apply pressure. Nature of the beast and all that Jazz.. :)

There are a handful of popular mods out there with spring loaded pins. I can't think of one offhand, but I know at least one variation of the lavatube was spring loaded. However the problem with those is that the seal isn't as good, so there's a greater risk of getting liquid into your battery, so most companies lean towards the tighter pins with the silicone seal.
