I live in a country where gas is sold in gallons, oil in liters, distance in meters and kilometers, but cloth or rugs are sold by the yard. Rice, beans, meat by the pound in the grocery but wholesale they are sold by the kilos. Peoples weight in lbs and height in cm. Strange these Dominicans, but my math mind loves it.

Yikes! I'd constantly be using the conversion app on my phone.

Hello everyone...I don't mean to just barge in on the thread that I've been following for several weeks.
After a substantial amount of reading, I just wanted to thank everyone for the valuable information.
I do not have 500 mesh (yet) however, I just successfully installed a 70mm / 400 wick with a 6/7 coil of 28g into a cobra.
Properly oxidizing the wick has been a challenge for me but persistence has prevailed.
The performance of this set up is absolutely amazing and I have this thread to thank for it.
Every post here has been very helpful and I thank everyone for that.
I hope that at some point I can contribute as much as everyone else has.

Good to hear mate. Yea I'm thinking a zmax due to the 5amp capacity. Heard they're a little inconsistent though. Are you generally happy with yours?
I'm very happy with the ZMAX Larry, $120 from ecigmodshop, arrived next day.
The Ohm checker is great fo gennys, I set mine to show Ohms when I hit the fire button, so when your nursing a new coil and wick you really know whats going on (in addition to taste and vapor production of course).
The power is not so much inconsistent as it is just plain inaccurate. Stoney posted some figures about indicated Watts vs true Watt and the Watts indicated by the Zmax started by underestimating output and then on a sliding scale to underestimating output. Basically in 18650 mode 6-12.5 watt true 3-15 watts indicated.
In double 18350mode 8-21watts true 3-15 watts indicated.
So once you get a feel for it it is a great performer, smaller than expected and very solid in it's SS finish.
I use the ultra bright blue Led display as a torch to find my keyhole in the dark when I return home at night Too! LOL
So if you ignore the scale and just use it as a guide it rocks :headbang:

Thanks again :)
Any hints on how to start rolling? Should I use a paper clip and then take it off before rolling? Or should I bend a small piece of mesh (1mm let's say) and then roll the mesh onto it?

thanks buddy!
I fold a small 1mm strip, then fold that strip, then I roll. I have gotten a 100 mm wick into a dud wick hole, but I can only roll one of those wicks about once a week.

1/wk then it's good for a month or 2 though ;)

wow! 100mm in a 2.5mm ChiD wick hole!! 8-o  (my poor fingers :cry:)

Thanks for the info Studiovape, much appreciated.
Just as I'd scrubbed em off the list, now I'm tempted again. I can live with the false readings as long as the thing fires consistently with high wattage I'd be happy. Decisions decisions!

Larry,

Not to pile on, but I thought I'd share...
This, from the Zmax thread: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...s-pics-tips-tricks-quirks-26.html#post7460401

And this, from the GV Alpha thread: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...-here-new-alpha-products-119.html#post7458841
Plus a couple of follow-up posts.

Seems like the one month mark is when the issues start to arise.

Cheers!

Thanks for the heads up Count.
Is anyone sending theirs back under the 6 month warranty?

Wow increasing the number of wraps with kanthal 28 really drinks down the tank juice. I can literally watch the precipitous drop occur. Of course this continues to prove all of bj's theories regarding wicking, number of wraps, 500 mesh etc. Put a lot of myths behind me at this point. Thanks to all contributors.

These large 500 28g wick/coils remind me of my pipe days. The first draw each time is a little cooler like when the fire was low in the pipe bowl, but as you draw more it gets great, I am enjoying the changes and controlling taste and vaper with the different types of draw, slow and long, short repetitive, long dual draws, all reminiscent of a good GBD or meerschaum pipe.

After a week of use, what does it mean when the only crud build up on your coils 5/6 wrap is only on the top few coils?

My current coil/wick has been working great but I wanted to make a new super tight wick with the mesh that I have (#400). I noticed that only the top 2 or 3 coils had a heavy build-up on them, especially the top coil. And now, after about a tank full of use on my new wick/coil 6/7 wrap I am already seeing the top coils getting dark and the bottom ones are still silverish colored.

Does this mean there is a short someplace just below the crud?

Dry burn it and see if all coils get hot. If you have a center hole in the wick, the juice that flows out the top tends to form crud on the top coils.

Yep, that's what was happening on my new coil. I had verified that all the coils were glowing before I filled it up when I first made it but something must have change. Just made a completely new coil and fiddled with it to make all coils glow. I'll keep an eye on it to see if it happens again. Why is it always so hard to get them all to glow. I think every coil i have ever made, the top coil always glows first and then the fiddling begins. Is this normal protocol for everyone?

And yes, my week old wick did have a small hole. This beast I made today has no hole that my eyes can see. I rolled the snot out of it.LOL
