These large 500 28g wick/coils remind me of my pipe days. The first draw each time is a little cooler like when the fire was low in the pipe bowl, but as you draw more it gets great, I am enjoying the changes and controlling taste and vaper with the different types of draw, slow and long, short repetitive, long dual draws, all reminiscent of a good GBD or meerschaum pipe.

Agreed, my grandfather used to smoke pipe and I inherited some of them. I smoked pipe long before I got started on cigarettes.

Now, my vaping style is much more akin to pipe than anything else. I don't inhale the vapor down to my lungs, only pull it down to the top of my throat then exhale through mouth, nose or both.

That's why I love vaping so much. It reminds me of my pipes.

yay! got our order today too :banana: although my brother got the jump on me -- rolled his 1st wick already :glare::glare: LOL he used TomCatt's calculator & believe me tried his DAMest ta roll a 100mm wick for his Orion -- EPIC fail! :laugh: @ the end he managed ta jam about 85mm in the 2.5mm wick hole  :laugh: he's a chainvaper so soon enough we'll get the field test results on 500 mesh under the most extreme conditions :laugh::laugh:

PS: off ta attempt my 1st 125mm wick now... :?: :?:

Brit in Orlando
Just wondered if someone could put a spreadsheet together giving mesh length and width per model please ?

If I get time I will get something together on Google Docs tomorrow. Hopefully tomorrow will be a quiet day at work.

So far -

100mm Zen's without insulator, Chinese DiDalikes

Looking for the HellFire Mega as well if possible, Monty know you have a couple of these ?

As for metric ? Easy but then I am European. Being a Brit miles is not surprisingly easier than kilometers though but base 10 for me has to be the way forward lol Been here for 6 years and still only happy with inches measuring up to say 10-12 inches after that get a bit confused.

Andy: On the Hellfire Mini I made a 60 mm. It can be more for sure but for now it works fine

Andy, I just put 125mm in my mini :D my brother & I both used TomCatt's calculator: 98 for 2.5mm(Orion) -- end result --> 85mm, I learned from my brother's mistake :facepalm: I mean "experience" :laugh::laugh: & took 16mm off the 141 calculated result--> 125mm fit pretty tight but it fit ;)

How the heck are you all getting the roll so tight?

I'm using 500 mesh, from the mesh site in the UK that a lot people seem to be using.

I'm using a Bliss.

I tried 80mm, and had no luck getting that through.

I tried 70mm, and could jam it through, but after removing it to oxidize the area where the wick would go I couldn't quite get it back in (I assume I bunched it up a bit during the first insert and then removal).

I tried 60mm, and oxidized the whole thing thoroughly, just to make it rigid, and couldn't fit it in after (it fit ok but snug at first, prior to hitting it with the torch).

I was rolling so tight that I can see I will literally have blisters tomorrow from it.

I must be missing something here, on how to roll it, if these are the lengths that people are using. Either that or the bliss hole is smaller than I'm guessing (it's about 2.5mm by holding a ruler to it, but I don't have anything more precise to measure the opening with).

Any suggestions? I start with a thin paper clip, then roll with both thumbs and fore fingers, remove the paper clip, and continue, and the only thing I can do is start making the roll push out the end more, because it just doesn't want to compact any further.

First are you sure you are rolling the #500, the extra sheets the mesh co sends can be 325 and even 200.

Yep, it's labeled in the corner as 500, and is very odd looking. I received two sheets labeled as 500 (my order), and 2 or 3 that are not labeled, and are much more transparent. All were from the mesh co in the UK.

Maybe my rolling technique isn't up to par? I've seen some videos on youtube of people rolling mesh, but they used far less mesh, and weren't going for a super tight roll. Two of my fingers now are blooming up with blisters, because I was pressing so hard. I even tried rolling them with the base of my hand (after they were rolled up), on a desk, and that seemed to actually loosen them. The most I could do was get the mesh to start squeezing out on both ends a lot, but I'm not sure that's the goal. It did thin it at the bases, but less so in the middle.

I haven't seen this mentioned... maybe there's a problem with it I haven't seen yet. I just got my first RBA (DUD), and was having a hard time getting my wick tight enough. So, being an impatient guy, I decided to try using a board to do it. I put the wick on a cutting board and used a piece of wood that I had around to roll it (about 1/2" x 2" x 18"), just putting pressure on the forward roll and moving my rolling board side to side along the length of the wick to keep the rolling even. I had it tight enough in a minute or so.

I asked my brother cuz he also has a Bliss & he talked to docdave about it's wick hole size -- they're 2.25mm each, going by TommCatt's calculator -- the tighest possible roll would be 79mm(if rolled with emonty's fingers ) so your 60mm should fit given that you roll it again after oxidation cuz heat expands metal, also as BJ pointed out -- make sure 1st it's indeed 500 cuz the lower # meshes are thicker :)

Cheers!

I'll give that a shot. I didn't realize the Bliss wick hole is smaller than most, so that explains that.

It was tricky to measure with a just a ruler, in dim lighting, so I had to guess that it was a standard size of 2.5mm.

UPDATE:

Just been fiddling with SS#500 again.
After more than a half sheet spent, I managed to get it right for the Line.

I discovered that SS#500 needs to be rolled quite stiff, without any tube in the middle.
Crammed 80mm wide mesh in my Line and it works pure bliss!
If I leave any hollow in the middle, a liquid is boiling and shoots hot droplets of liquid in my mouth, which is not very pleasant.
So, compact wick, rolled very stiff, as much as one can manage.
I've done it by slowly roll at beginning of the mesh, over and over so i get no hollow tube in the middle of a wick.

And coil must float over the mesh, not much tension.

Rolled very tight, as much as I can cram in genesis (Line=80mm wide), no hollow in the middle, lightly wrapped 3-4 coils (1.4-5 Ohms), wicks very very good, it seems I can tape a switch and empty a tank in one long burn.
Can't bring it to shed a leak, either.
Plenty of thick, dense vapor, smooth flavor, very smooth silky vapor. (I use VG 12mg liquid).
And a flavor is comming out very intense.

For me, a SS#500 wick is a way to go, glad I given it another try.
That is a pain of early adopters, have to figure it out all by yourself.

I'm sure that someone has covered this or maybe even posted a video, but i can't find it. I'm trying to make a U shaped wick with 400 mesh, and every time I try to bed the wick, it either wrinkles or kinks. This is driving me crazy, and help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I've never tried this but I have read that when rolling your wick pull on each end as you roll, stretching it out. Also, don't quench when oxidizing because that will stiffen the wick. Hope that helps.
