I rolled a 500 mesh wick today, used 90mm and rolled a really tight wick (fits into 3mm hole), was all excited until i fired up my AGA. The vapor is pathetic at full power on a VAMO, and after just 3 seconds i get a nasty burnt hit. This didnt even happen with my 400 wicks.

What am i doing wrong? I thought more mesh is better so i used a ton to make use of the large wick hole, but the darn thing is hardly even wicking at all.

I stopped at 70mm on the AGA so that there was a wee bit of room vis-a-vis wick & hole. Burnt hit could be the result of lack of wicking &/or overheating the juice.

First did you wash the mesh in detergent and boil it before rolling. Second every wick I ever built and it is many, if I hit it with full power at the beginning it would short (hotspot) and give burnt juice. Break in all wicks slowly with very little power until all hot spots oxidize. Usually takes me an hour or more. Patience is your biggest asset with SS wicks and Genisis. I have had excellent results with 90mm of 500 in a 3mm hole.

For me 90mm is great on 3mm hole, but I use 10 wraps of 28g and that needs a lot of juice.

Hey, I haven't paid much attention to this thread lately but 90mm of mesh?! rolled tight to a 3 mm diameter?! Is this good? I guess I'll have to backtrack but that seems like a lot of mesh to me.

I have somewhere around 40mm in a standard chid hole ,6 wraps and it vaped up the pluid very well. Rolling tighter with more mesh works better? I'll try it next time. But the Ibtanked 25 mm tank with a standard resistance Boge carto is just cranking and no fuss after the first juice dump, so it'll be a while. It's a big tank.

Do you find more flavor with more wraps?
More everything. The reason I went to 30 and 28g wire was not to go to LR, it was to get a larger heating area. Just as an example if 200 degrees wire temp is the ideal temp for a particular juice, then 200 degrees on 10 wraps gives more vapor and flavor than 4 wraps of a thinner wire at the same temp. I enjoy true flavor and a lot of vapor and IMO LR is very harsh always on the point of almost burning the juice with such a small heating area.

I vape mostly at 2.2-2.6Ω with 32 gauge. I am going to try 30g again. I tried LR and it was not good.

I've been a little disenchanted with 1 ohm vaping lately. Normally, I'd do a 2/3 of 28. This is my go-to setup and haven't ventured too far outside that area. After seeing this post, I made a 7/8 wrap of 28, with worry that it would produce too little vapor for my monsterous air-hole but I can honestly say, BJ is spot on with this post. It makes as much, if not more vapor and what really does it for me is the flavor. I've been *really* bummed that the flavors are harsh, or rather, get harsh and burnt rather quickly @ 1ohm. I suspect that won't happen nearly as quickly with this setup.

Well, well ... excellent thread BJ43. You certainly do know your stuff.

I rolled a nice fat & tight wick using #500 SS mesh tonight for my RSST. The pre-rolled width is 9 cm. Rolled it for a very small center hole for the portion of the wick inserted in the tank and virtually no hole at the top of the wick. To finalize the wick, I crimped the top of it.

Wow !!! Your advice is sound & works. I have vaped 3 tanks tonight, very little tipping & no dry hits. This wick delivers consistent vapor, flavor and TH each and every time.

Additionally, this wick eliminates all of the crackling, popping, sputtering and boiling of the juice I was experiencing.

This wick works so well that I can vape a tank bone dry and still get a couple of very good pulls before a refill is required.

(coil: 0.7 Kanthal ribbon wire 2/1 wrap).

The ultimate vape has been found!

Feeling like a kid at xmas today ... Rolled a new wick for my RSST --- #500 SS mesh cut at a width of 11 cm (this is not a typo).

Rolled a nice tight wick just to the point where it fits in nice & snug in the wick hole. This time I rolled the wick for no center hole, none at the bottom, none at the top.

Might take a couple of tanks to break in the wick but otherwise this setup is giving me that vamping like a champ feeling!
