I had an order come from FT just the other day and it was well over $100. No customs anything. Mailman handed it to me ... end of story.

I'm not concerned about this ... for now or the near term future.
If anyone gets socked news would spread very quickly.

I can see where it may be in everybody's best interests to do separate smaller orders in the future.

Uh oh.
I wonder if it had been shipped by a different carrier, would it have gone thru ok.
I've had packages shipped from China through the normal USPS,Fedex, and Dhl,and Fedex is the only 1 i have ever got a bill from. It's for customs and duty fees,i avoid Fedex as much as possible when buying from anywhere outside the U.S. because of that.

fed ex is a tax collector?
where do they get the authority?
that would take legislative action.
i wouldn't pay.
FedEx is a customs broker. The pay the duties on your behalf and then bill or otherwise collect from you.

I mean, $5 or $25? How much would a bill like that be for a 1 unit, approx 1 1/2lb box? Total price was $32 incase it’s rated against that.
If you get a bill from the shipper/broker firm it will include charges for the tariff/tax on the items in the shipment as well as the fee charged for the broker service. The broker fee can be considerably higher than the tax you will owe to the US government. For example, your import tax could be $1.99, but the broker charge could be $25.00, so you will get a bill for $26.99 before you can collect your package.

Well that’s not cool. The good news is, after a little snooping I found out it’s been held up in customs for 7 days, so it may just not come.

For those experienced, what’s the basics on handling that? I’ve never dealt with customs. A few initial questions are, if they want to charge something I consider too much can I just say “send it back”? Is it being held something I should respond to by filing a dispute for a refund through pay pal, just to have it on record in case of a deadline?

Luckily it’s nothing “important”, it is authentic and there is no nicotine inside the package. The total cost was $32 so I could live with taking that loss should they want to fine me something I’m not willing to pay. Should I just sit tight and let nature take it’s course? I’ve been reading results from various searches and answers have been, just wait, call customs, file a dispute with pay pal, pretty much all over the place.

I feel like I’m in trouble for some reason.:rules:

Every China package I've gotten has never had a declared value above $20 showing on the label.

Wonder if next years fed. tax form will have a line asking what you have imported and how much value?
I'll be sure to fill that out....
I think the govt will require receipts of purchase to decide.

Most international carriers act as official agents for Gov. Customs Depts in many countries, so they can collect taxes and charge a brokerage/admin fee, it's a win win for customs and the carriers... They like doing it as the fees are big.

I recently posted about a sample pod kit worth £20 ish that was held by UPS en route to UK from HK, UPS lied to me on the phone, then charged me £5.00 VAT ( Gov tax) and £35 brokerage fee. It's going to get worse here when Brexit hits as nobody knows what the hell is precisely going to happen with import taxes, tariffs, controls etc.

PS even if i refused the parcel I would still have to pay the fee, that's the law here!

Do I have to declare this mod on my taxes? :?:

I can’t say I like that at all. So let’s say hypothetically a mod you purchase is defective, will you have to pay that fee for each passage through customs or is it only applied when money is being exchanged?

It depends...

There is a way to declare something as a returned purchase which could reduce the duties back to the vendor, but I would expect the broker to still ding someone for their fee. If you are in the USA and doing international shipping, US Mail is usually the least likely to cost extra for duties and fees. The private couriers are the ones that hit you with the high broker charges.

Regarding the paypal question, check with paypal terms, but as far as ebay shopping goes, refusing to accept an international package because of Customs charges is not allowed. There are usually warnings for any international purchasing that the receiver is responsible for all charges for Customs when they import something.

As a small shipper, I think we are pretty much at the mercy of the courier services. I recently bought something really expensive and got dinged with way more fees than I expected. To make things worse, the courier calculated the duty incorrectly and was not willing to re-submit the paperwork to Customs to get the duty reduced. I suppose I could have been a stinker about it and tried to cancel the DHL broker's work and gone to Customs to file the entry myself, but it would have cost me a lot more in time and brain cells to fight for $20.

If your package is sitting in Customs, try to be patient and let things happen. International transactions are sometimes a bit of an adventure, but if it is something you really, really, really want, you just have to roll with it. I do hope you like whatever it is your ordered.

Did that have to do with it containing nicotine or would that charge have been there even if it was only pg/vg/no nic?

I did have to send paperwork in to get the delivery to me. Asking about the nicotine and what type of business I had???
