I’ve never seen a flavoring that wasn’t pg based. I’ve heard of VG based but never seen one. There are water based ones?
I could be wrong, but I think he meant water SOLUABLE flavor. When I was checking out flavors at a local spice and coffee shop, they had both oil- and pg- carriers in the flavors. The oil-base flavors might be fine in cooking recipes, but not vape juices we inhale.

As far as availability, I think the nic will be the block for DIY liquids. The other ingredients for juice are used in other DIY things like food and cosmetics.

What I'd like to know at this point is...

Are these "water based" flavor concentrates we use for vaping popular in other markets? I mean popular enough to not worry about them being widely available 5 years from now, or should DIY vapers consider hoarding flavors?

I really don't want to hoard flavor concentrates and if it does get to that point I'll have to consider getting on that road to quitting. I already threw away a lot of hardware last month because my stash is impossible to sell or just not worth the effort.

What Cats said, water soluble. Don't see them going away, since they are MOSTLY used for other things.

Yeah, nic will be the stopper for those who aren't already stocked up.

Ah. I don’t ever use non-water soluble flavoring. Any oil is, I understand, a big no-no with vaping and is one of the more dangerous things you can do. It didn’t even occur to me he might not be talking about non-water soluble stuff. You can make oils water soluble (more or less) by doing the right things but they’re still a no-no.

That's what I was wondering. I know nothing about what other uses these PG based flavors have and how popular they are in those other uses. I've never seen PG based flavorings until I started DIY.

I expect the demand for DIY supplies has been dropping after the open system market as a whole got choked off. I doubt there are very many new people entering into DIY at this point while the existing customer base is shrinking as they move to disposables, stop vaping or die off.

Glad we were here for the golden years and prepared for this. Sad for so many that are stuck with what's left of the market.
Sad but true.

I got into the open system deal in 14. I was using cigalikes for several years before that, then I discovered Egos which were much better. Right after that I got on ECF and discovered Pro Tanks and wattage mods which were much better again. On to even better mods and better tanks like KFL. Same trajectory as a lot of other folks here.

If I started today there would be really good pods and disposables straight off the shelf. My GS used Pro Tanks and a mod I gave him. Then last year he came over with a disposable called Proud Mary. It gave a super tasty and nic loaded vape. Not sure I would have ever got on the open system road if stuff like that had been available back in 14.

I did enjoy the tinkering, but I'm a tinkerer generally. I do think for me the coil building and juice making and experimenting all helped fill the hole left from cigarettes. Hanging out on ECF helped fill that hole as well. I still enjoy all that, but I got into it because there wasn't really much choice back then. I still do it because it's a hobby I wouldn't want to give up.

We tend to blame Pharma and so forth for the changes. But we live in a world where money rules. I suspect vaping would have changed the way it has even if we lived in an actual democracy and all the stuff we see disappearing was still widely available. Tinkerers would still buy it but most people wouldn't.

All of the flavorings I use are food flavorings. As long as we have food... ;)

Most are PG based, some alcohol (ok if you let it evaporate out before vaping), some oil based. Yeah, NEVER want to inhale oil based!!

Yep. $$$

BT can't make much off us diy'ers, so disposables to the (their!) rescue. Make 'em keep buying more. Then again, making vaping as "easy" as lighting up a cig was may help some make the switch.

Double edged sword? Fewer cig related deaths, but more trash...

Yeah actually I tried using peppermint PG based flavoring in baking and it didn't work out too well. Too weak. Would need to add so much that it would thin the batter too much. So peppermint extract it is. I just figured PG based flavoring isn't the best for backing, but I have limited experience with it. Great for vaping though lol

I know you can't vape oil based.

Peppermint extract is (I think) an alcohol based thing to pull out the peppermint oil. Again oil. Oils are fine to eat. It’s just breathing them that’s bad. So you don’t put peppermint extract in vapes. PG based flavors can be good for baking, it just depends on the flavor. It’s not always good though because of the oil thing. You happens to pick the wrong one is all. Cinnamon will also suck.

Flavorings we use in DIY are also good for making the simple syrup flavors used on shaved ice. I've been using them for years when I do shaved ice at fundraiser events for the local horse rescue. It beats paying the ridiculous prices for the flavored simple syrups from Amazon, from concession supply vendors, etc.

The favorites of people who buy the shaved ice from me are made with these DIY flavorings:
Kids love - Bubblegum (made with TFA Bubblegum), Blue Raspberry (made with OSDIY Blue Raspberry Slush), Banana (made with WF Banana Candy), and the Strawberry (made with a combo of TFA Strawberry Ripe + CAP Sweet Strawberry)

Adults love - Mango (made with WF Island Mango), Root Beer (made with OSDIY Olde Tyme Root Beer one-shot), Margarita (made with OSDIY Margarita one-shot), and the Banana (made with WF Banana Candy)

It depends on the particular simple syrup flavor I'm making. Some require more, some less...because the flavorings themselves are different strengths. It was repeated trial and error getting the amounts of each one figured out, so the flavor could easily be tasted, and not just barely there...once it was poured over the shaved ice.

I'll find my notes for making the simple syrup flavors and come back with info on the amounts used to make the various ones.

S’ what they were originally meant for. That and candy. There is a whole candymaking video thing (it’s kinda cool to watch) and the first time I saw one dude pulled out a bottle and I was like “I recognize THAT!”

OK, so this is all I wanted to know/find out.

It appears from what y'all are saying, these PG based flavorings have a MUCH larger market than vaping so there should be absolutely no threat that these flavorings should be hard to find/acquire as the DIY vape juice market gets smaller and smaller.

Good to know.

That's what I've always believed.

One possible snag folks have talked about is that the flavors safe for vaping are currently separated out for us by many vendor sites. It might happen in the future that all the flavors are listed together leaving it up to us to figure out which ones are safe for us. Like reading the small print to check for oil in the ingredients. And people who don't understand the do's and don'ts making scary mistakes.

As far as DIY goes the only place where there is an issue is nicotine base. Even ego batteries and 510s are safe now as someone started making soldering iron heads for 510. They work pretty good too. The adjustable wattage of a regulated mod makes them kinda kick ...
