Hey All-
I'm just now getting into extraction and DIY. I ordered from Pipes and Cigars (@PapawBrett : great service and selection) I've Mason-ed up:
Dunhill Standard Mixture
Dunhill Nightcap
Dunhill Flake
Hearth and Home Louisiana Red
Seattle Pipe Club Seattle Evening
and a couple of Peter Stokkebyes

I'm digging ready y'all's suggestions and testings and should have my first batch to filter in a week or two after sitting in the dark for a month or so.

Thanks!

So I am looking over the Pipes and Cigars site. They have Bulk tobacco Sampler Packs that seem like an interesting place to start for variety.
Is anyone familiar with this site or these samples ?

P&C is where I make most of my on-line tobacco purchases, been a regular customer for over 10 years and never had a single problem. Haven't tried any of their sample packs so can't comment on them. I like being able to buy a single ounce of -premium- tobacco instead of an expensive tin. Back when I smoked a pipe I purchased my favorite blends by the pound and their prices were the best around. Now that I just extract flavor I rarely buy more than a single ounce of any blend or a single cigar of a type but regularly order 30 or more different tobaccos at a time. There are other reputable on-line tobacco vendors like "Milan Tobacconists" and they carry some blends/tobaccos that P&C doesn't and visa versa. Never had a problem with them either. Have fun!

Some really good choices, I especially like Nightcap and Louisiana Red, two of my favorites although Red needs to age (steep), for a month or two before it reaches its flavor potential.

When cold processing an extraction using PG as the solvent, after 4 - 6 weeks has passed I draw out a few drops and mix an "in-process sample" to drip. If it tastes great you know the extract is ready and can separate/filter it. If it isn't robust and tasty just let it continue soaking for a couple more weeks and sample again. You can't over process a cold PG based extraction but you can under process it. Be sure to post your impressions/observations when finished. :)

A month or two ago was digging thru my stash of extracts and had found a bottle of Orlik Golden Sliced and American Spirit Organic I had mixed (50/50 of each at 13%) some time back, several months ago, and got me back on the NET's again, after taking a break from them over the summer. While digging, I also pulled out another Orlik extract I had done, when I made the Golden Sliced. Orlik Golden Mixture: Golden Mixture combines Virginias, Burleys and a bit of black Cavendish with a typically Danish top-note. It's a cool, sweet blend with a wonderful aroma.(description from p&c website). Just taking a stab at blending up something I decided to go with 3% Golden Mixture, 2% Izmir Ribbon Cut, 1% McClelland Oriental Blending. 50/50 @ 12mg nic. I gotta tell ya I been vaping this stuff for the last couple of weeks and really haven't wanted anything else. I'm sure I'll move on soon enough. Lol! It's just a good, smooth, dry and satisfying smok. Great morning smok with coffee. I vape pretty much the way I used to smoke. Don't deviate very much from anything other than another straight tobacco or tobacco blend, really not into very much sweetness and other flavors, just like em' straight. So for many this may not cut it, but for me it sure fits the bill. The Orliks, Izmir and Oriental were all heat assisted extracts. 24 hours 150 degrees and then 6 weeks cold soak. Filtered down to 2.5um on the Orlik and 1.5um on the Izmir and Oriental.

Started first ethanol extract yesterday per @Str8vision process. Excited to finally get this going.

Gawith, Hoggarth & Co. Dark Bird's Eye: Dark Bird's Eye is made of a dark-fired form of Virginia with the main stem left intact, which lends even more flavor. It's cut into a fine shag for easy packing. It stays lit easily, but should be smoked especially slowly as it can burn quickly and get hot. Dark Bird's Eye is a stout smoke with tremendous flavor. (from p&c website)

These will follow.

Five Brothers: Old fashioned, real honest tobacco flavor with a kick, these phrases describe Five Brothers to a T. This is straightforward dark Burley, cut in a fine ribbon that's almost a shag. Although a lot of people smoke this on its own, it also makes a nice addition to milder tobaccos to give them more body. (from p&c website)

Samuel Gawith 1792 Flake: Samuel Gawith 1792 Flake is a legendary, full-bodied mixture of deeply matured Virginia and dark-fired tobaccos which are pressed into a cake with is further matured under pressure and steamed until dark. The cakes are sliced and finished with a tonquin dressing for the characteristic flavor. This is best enjoyed by experienced pipe enthusiasts. (from p&c website)

Ordered these tonight to have ready for processing as ethanol extracts. It's been a productive weekend!

Peter Stokkebye 84 Turkish: Stokkebye’s Turkish Pipe tobacco is a flavorful blend of Turkish Samsoun (a legendary Oriental leaf) which is sun-cured and expertly blended with ripe Virginia tobaccos for a complex pleasing smoke. It is lightly aromatic and smooth. (from p&c website)

GL Pease Union Square: Union Square combines select Virginias, ranging from sweet, ascerbic golden leaf to toasty, zesty reds. The mixture is pressed to deepen and develop the flavors without the need to add a top-dressing or sweeteners. For the cleanest taste of fine flue-cured tobaccos. (from p&c website)

GL Pease JackKnife: The first in the New World Series from GL Pease, JackKnife Plug is an all natural blend of dark-fired Kentucky leaf and red, ripe Virginia tobaccos layered on a central core of golden flue-cured leaf. The whole provides deep, earthy flavors with a hint of bright sweetness. The tobaccos are pressed and matured in cakes before being cut into 2oz blocks. JackKnife is a stout blend with the dark-fired leaf adding a subtle smokiness and a finish reminiscent of dark chocolate while the Virginia tobaccos provide a sturdy backbone. Slice it thick and rub it out for a ribbon cut, slice thin for a shag, or chop it into cubes. (from p&c website)

Have a good one everybody!

Hey Thanks Str8-
I was "gently rolling" the ones I'd had in the cabinet. One of the first I put up on Oct. 7th was
Peter Stokkebye 315 Black Coffee. I took the lid off and tasted a drop. Very sweet and I was getting the touch of coffee. That one and Peter Stokkebye 302 Blk Cherry Cav were put up at the same time so, should be ready in a week or so. I'll do the small test you suggested. I've enjoyed MVJ's Peter Stokkebye's blends and they led me to those two selections.

On another topic maybe y'all can help me find a flavor I've had once but, can't find again. On my first order with Diane she sent a sample of their Centurion. It had a beautiful grassy/hay aspect with a sharp bite. Throughly enjoyable for me. Since then I've gotten STP Centurion and regular Centurion but, neither has that same grassy/hay flavor.

I did a search for "grassy" on P&C and came up with these:
http://www.pipesandcigars.com/pipe-tobacco/73027/wessex-gold-virginia-flake/#p-117139

http://www.pipesandcigars.com/pipe-...gawith-full-virginia-flake-tin-bulk/#p-118516
http://www.pipesandcigars.com/pipe-tobacco/97644/dunhill-flake/#p-187015
The Dunhill Flake I have started extracting.

Are there others in y'all's experience that have that grassy/hay flavor?

Thanks!

Dunhill Elizabethan Mixture had a very "grassy" straw note to it even though it's a Vaper (VirginiA, PERique blend).

Hello everyone; I am looking for a few tobaccos similar in flavor to cigarettes - not cigars. Any suggestions? I have already tried Organic Spirit - with and without Perique and love them both. About to place an order for Nightcap and Louisiana Red. Was wondering if there are other candidates I could try.

Natural American Spirit cigarettes are the tobacco(s) used to make Big Spirit, Organic Spirit and Speaking Spirit NETs. I've extracted the one with Perique that Speaking Spirit is made from. Haven't played with many other tobaccos that replicate cigarette flavor but perhaps someone else can chime in with recommendations.

I've not extracted Rustica, it's a tobacco known for its high nicotine content rather than palatable flavor although a very popular tobacco absolute is made from it. Few tobacconists carry or mix blends with it. Personally, I would love to extract Rustica just to see what it yields, might be quite tasty for our purposes, you never know till you've tried.

What I do know is the drying/curing process used on a tobacco can make or break the flavor we are able to extract from it. Drying/curing removes chlorophyll from the leaf making it more palatable. I tend to enjoy extracts made from tobaccos that were dried/cured using a combination of heat and pressure. I've extracted organic whole leaf -sun dried- tobacco and it yielded a rather bland flavor. I don't think that a never dried, uncured tobacco would extract well due to the excess moisture (and chlorophyll), in the leaf but don't know that for certain.

I once bought some centurion from Diane and I know exactly what you mean by "grassy". One extract of mine that tastes exactly like Centurion, surprisingly enough, is a cigar: Hoya de Nicaragua: Antano Dark Carojo. After breaking the cigar apart, the method I used was a 4-week, sun-assisted PG soak.

For a cigarette-type flavor you might consider a burley-forward cube cut. Peter Stokkebye's 41 Cube Cut, for instance. Alternatively, you might want to try extracting straight fire-cured burley. Try it on its own or use it for mixing. It has a robust, leathery, spicy/smokey taste that might just hit the spot for the ex-cigarette smoker.

Thanks faris. I haven't done a cigar yet. After breaking it up do you tear/cut it apart?
