Got the screens today to try. Got both brass and SS. Remember to heat the brass to red hot with a lighter to burn off any coating. First one I tried without burning off the coating had a funny metallic taste. Didn't leak, though and did hold tons of liquid. Less vapor but not too little. I had to fill it by removing the screens then putting them on after it was full. I also heated some SS screens to test. It is an improvement over constantly re-filling the carts with the PTB mod.

OK, I tried it for two days. It is hard to refill. It takes the same number of drops to fill as the PTB mod. It does last longer, but with less vapor. Meaning it releases somewhat less fluid per puff but goes all the way empty before needing refilled, rather than the PTB which releases a little more fluid per puff and retains some fluid when it needs to be refilled.

I am going back to the PTB. It was an interesting experiment. This is all of course just my opinion.

If someone wants my brass or SS screens (about 50 of each), PM me and we can work it out.

Did you use 3 screens? I use 2 and it is working really good. I do agree they are a pain to fill. I also have to remove the screens. I just fill 4 or 5 carts at a time, then I don't have to worry about it for awhile.

I am thinking about giving the PTB another shot. It is much easier to refill.

I gave it my best effort - at least 5 - 6 tries and had no luck. Either had bad leaking, no wicking or nearly impossible to fill. All this is on an 801. So I bailed and tried the blue foam mod and have had great sucess! Seems to be the only 801 cart mod that works. It's tricky getting the right width of foam so it's compressed a little bit but not too much. Too little compression and it leaks and floods the atty if it's vertical too long. Too much compression and it won't wick well. Either way it's the only cart mod I've tried that makes the 801 useable.

Removal to fill? I just sock the dropper bottle (small one from JC) directly down onto the top screen, give a little squeeze until I see juice in the top screen. YMMV but it works well for me.
(I've moved past counting every drop to ensure it's totally full or empty..LOL)

FWIW, the corrosion probably isn't just a matter of heat, but also of the liquid acting as an electrolyte. Remember that there is electricity flowing in there, and even though it's not flowing directly through your screens, it's creating a charged environment and accelerating corrosion.

Also, there are gold-plated versions of those screens, and I suspect the people that are having less trouble with corrosion may be using those without knowing it. And VG/flavoring concentrations may be an issue as well.

I've been using a slightly modified version of this for several days now. Haven't had any leaks so long as I don't overfill and it seems to wick & vape well. Even the wife was impressed. My only complaint is that for some reason the carts seem to hold less juice now than they did with the blue foam and therefore I need to top off a little more often. I will have to experiment more with the screens and try to make them as "short" as possible.

I gave that a try with no success. It is possible I am using a finer mesh screen then you. It will not matter in a little while. I am working on a cart mod that extends the fluid reservoir all the way back to the base of the cart. I will just have to remove the base cap, a plug and then fill it like a dropper bottle.

This mod should hold roughly two times the liquid, and be really easy to refill.

Ok I love this mod, I tried the rose, and Y type and did not have much luck, so I tried a formed version with a dimple, it worked perfectly. Form fitted to a 901 cart and I can put it in any direction no worry about lining up the Y slot. Well here is what I did:

I got about 5 pipe screen kits, that came with 5 SS screens, 3 large and two smaller ones, I decided on the larger ones to try this with. I first took a 901 cart and cut it in half:

I then formed the two screens on a pen top to get the form:
IMAG0044.jpg

Next I used a smaller mechanical pencil to push the screen in from the cut side of the 901 cart, continually forming and pushing as I went:
IMAG0045.jpg

Almost in!!!

Flip side all the way in and flattened:

Now I flipped it over and pushed with the mechanical pencil to form the dimple, I found that if I pushed this way it would bottom out on the table and I could get a good dimple in it for the atty to rest against:

Here is the formed screen, not how to get into the cart as it will fight me the whole way as the scree edges are frayed and will catch:
IMAGE_049.jpg

Easy push it back into the cut 901 cart and use you fingers to taper the end that will go into the cart:
IMAGE_050.jpg

Now gently insert it into the cart and ensure the edges do not get caught, keep rotating it until it starts to go in:
IMAGE_051.jpg

Now seat it flush and use an old atty and seat it the rest of the way:
IMAGE_042.jpg

To fill, tap it so the screen comes back to the top a little and angle it at a 45 degree angle, then drip into one side and the air comes out the other. When refilling it, blow on the screen so you force the liquid that has collected back into the cart so air can get out.
TADA!
Done.

I theory this should work with any cart, just cut an old one in half and use it to form the screen. I have made 5 so far with this teqnique use in the same cut 901 cart as the former.

Hope this helps, and thanks for this awesome idea!
It vapes like a workhorse now without any burnt taste and no leaks!
I Love it!

I wanted to use this mod but was concerned about the green tint some people were noticing after a day or so. I used a round 3/4 inch brass screen as a template and laid it on a 1" stainless steel round screen. I then cut around the brass to make a 3/4 inch circle. I repeated this until I made 3 3/4 inch round stainless steel screens. The wholes in the stainless steel are a little bigger than the brass but once I made the plug it didn't seem to leak at all. I then used STRIC9's method of folding one screen about a third up and then folded down to the other edge. I repeated this with 2 more screens. I then took some pliers and made sure they were flat. I placed 2 of the screens together and rapped the third around the other two about 2/3's toward the top. I used the pliers again to tighten the ring holding them together a little. Then place in cart so the top edges are almost flush with the top of the cart. Mine stick up about 2 millimeters about the top of the cart. Then I took a small phillips head screwdriver and made some room in the plug so the atomizer bridge would not be crushed. Works like a charm, no brass, no tea bag, no bad taste. It does take some time to make and with the stainless being harder to work with you will get stuck once or twice but it will be worth it. If you need more instruction just let me know. I wan't to make the rose mod but I am really not sure how to do it so if anyone can explain or has a video please let me know.

Here's my variation:

This is standard 1mm solder wick used to soak up excess solder from a joint.
IMG_7217.jpg

Cut off 5cm
IMG_7218.jpg

Tease it out to around 5mm width
IMG_7219.jpg

Fold it in a zigzag
IMG_7221.jpg

Use a small screwdriver to push it in the cartridge
IMG_7222.jpg

Make a small gap at the side for air to surface while filling.

This one took 12 drops of liquid.
