Sadly a lot of sellers will refuse to change the name they've been calling it for various reasons. One of the main reason being that it is a major selling point to have the word 'Cigarette' in the name of the product. That way possible consumers can more easily associate with the product.
Even though the present name kind of sticks out like a sore thumb.
The thing to remember here is that we, the consumers, actually hold the power in all retail relationships. If we are consistent about what we call them and about what we buy, the suppliers will be forced to work with that in order to show up in a search engine and gain more customers. If we all started calling it a doodlywhack and only went with suppliers we could find by searching that term, then only the suppliers using that term would make sales. The supplier must follow his market or crash and burn. This is why we suddenly have so many suppliers offering the USB passthrough
batteries - we have made it quite clear on here that we want this item pretty bad, so when the suppliers saw a chance to acquire them, they did just that in an attempt to pick up the business of those who are soldering challenged or unwilling to make the effort to mod themselves a USB passthrough.
Another example - the manual switch. We raved about the SD and the KB so consistently that it is now the new hot item to get your hands on if you are a supplier, especially since people have been willing to pay upwards of 100 USD for them so far. The 901 gets rave
reviews as well, suppliers are really consistent about carrying 901s because they know it is what we are looking for.
Yes, language does have power, but only if we allow it to have that power. We really can reclaim the cigarette name if we are willing to proudly stand up to those who still associate it with negatives. I am a lesbian and very proud of it. The word .... only has power if I decide to give it that power. I, for one, have decided to be very proud of being a .... and not get angry or defensive when someone tries to wield the term as a weapon against me. It quickly takes the wind out of their sails when I do not take the bait and get angry and escalate it. We change/reverse the connotation of words by changing/reversing the denotation. We educate. We are consistent about how we use the term. In this way, we make the word mean what we say it means. This is how language works. The pentacle was once a very powerful symbol of protection and wisdom. The meaning changed when the Inquisition was very consistent about giving it the negative meaning of devilworship - it did not have to be true, just consistent. You have to be confident and stubborn to change the meaning of words, but it can be done. In U.S. slang, the words phat, dope, bad, cool, and hot all have positive meanings - because a minority of people decided to be very persistent and consistent about using them to have these meanings.
So, the real question is : are we willing to proactively change or will we continuously re-act to others until we all change and find agreement once again?
