Valid points on both sides of this "issue".
Truth be told, I enjoy that it's being called a DiD copy. I'm excited about how excited peeps are at finally being able to have a DID-like genny in their stable.
But, on the other hand, ... Truth be told...
I worry about the quality of SS with lead (so far they (the copiers) have skirted the question, they "refuse" to state which grade of SS it is). If it were top quality, or even quite good quality, they would shouting it from the rooftops. But they're not. They're squirming. They know we know about "lead" and the grades of SS that contain lead, etc.
I worry that newbies to this genny, will not like it, and will then compare the real DID with their Failed copy DID.
The DID copy is NOT "just as good, just as awesome" as the original. It has it's own problems, it's own quirks, to deal with, that the original doesn't have. I feel it's a disservice to Jim, to tout it as "just as awesome". It's also hurting those who give up on their copies, thinking it's as good as it gets. They don't "know" that the original DID's cap is precisely punched, they don't KNOW that Jim uses top quality SS, they don't KNOW that a copy can be drilled out but that it might tarnish and rust... but Jim's original DID won't. (except the brass posts, which is another topic for another day). I don't know for a fact, but I believe Jim has top notch SS nuts and posts in his DID's, unlike the copies that will have "cheapest".
I just hope that the word COPY remains in the description of the DID COPY.
I can see it now... "wahhhh. I bought a DID and the brass rusted badly after I drilled the hole larger, because the stupid hole was too small and not positioned properly. I'm never buying another one again! I can't believe *this* is considered a "great" genny! Why would they copy leaded materials???"
Well, that's a tad over the top today... but not tomorrow.
It's flattering today, to be worth copying, to be the topic of a frenzy. But what about tomorrow when all those DID COPIES that were a "little bit off" turn things around with complaints? I'll never buy the original if THIS is what they're like!
It's a catch-22.
Hence, the tension.
The DID is AWESOME!!!!!! If you have problems with your copy, please don't think that the DID will have the same problems. (air hole, wick hole, lead, size,... oh yes, the size for the OCD among us... the copy is larger than the Mini DID, the MINI fits perfect .... oh nevermind).
It's fun getting the feet wet in an affordable way, but please, don't tout it as "just like and just as awesome" as the original. That's a disservice.
