This camera is connected using PoE, power over Ethernet so it's connected with a four pair cable, standard Ethernet cable. The first one I had was "wireless" for the network connection but needed a power cable, as in 110VAC, so they aren't truly wireless. I did have to buy a "PoE injector" to supply the power, but it was worth it. Right now the wire is strung to trees about 7' off the ground, but once the weather breaks I plan on putting in some flex tubing underground, idiot stick work for sure.

I'll grab a snapshot in the morning showing the IR picture. It looks black and white by comparison, but the detail is still there which is what counts.

Good night early. This time change has made me all mixed up about when to go to bed. I think it'll be soon. Here's some teasel. I love this weed. It has such interesting shapes and textures, and each one is different. In summer, the prickly round part gets little purple flowers that the bees love. I think teasel must be related to thistles.

Got my grenade today, quite by surprise. Went to the Pony Express Office this morning to pick up the mail and found one in my box. A good online friend had gifted me one without me knowing anything. It's the cat's pajamas, comfortable and hefty in hand. Kind of short on battery life being an 18350 but then I wuzz hitting it pretty hard too and cranking up the wattage. Hope you enjoy yours Awsum.

    Hi Volties,

See what I miss when I take a break from the internet for a day? A lot of stuff!:laugh:
First of all, I wanna say...

Uncle, you always crack me up when you toss out those emoties. So I hope you don't mind if I borrow some. You too, Rave. Someone Showed me how to save them and use ones from other places(because ECF's generic ones were getting sort of bland) and they also gave me a link to their photobucket account where they had a huge assortment of the fun little guys. Now I am addicted, I think.View attachment 314100

Raven, I am glad you are gonna get your shot. I sincerely hope that relieves the pain.

Sandy, I enjoy reading about your tutoring sessions. Matter of fact, sometimes I wish you had been my teacher in school. I had 2 "teachers" in school (math) that; 1 should never had been teaching in the first place as she never got her teaching degree in the first place and 2 shouldn't have ever taught or been a coach because she did not have any leadership qualities. I failed both years of math one in 7th grade and the other in 11th. Actually all their students failed. Thankfully I had very good teachers tutoring me the next year(s) so I could graduate on time. (And get this I actually made great grades in all my other classes!) I wonder why we even were forced to take algebra. I have never even used it.

Let's see, I only use Volt products; juice, batteries, and tanks. Just because I feel I would be cheating on them if I bought something else. Heehee, I am a very loyal customer.

Lizzie, I love those pictures of your pond. I am also glad your new doggies are settled in and getting along with your other critters. I hope your search for your Horsie House goes well. I love hearing about Nevada and Wiseguy... They are so cute. Oh! That reminded me. A while back, I was coming home from visiting my mom, when I looked out at someone's pasture. They had a miniature horse that reminded me of Wiseguy, 'cept she was bigger I think. They also had a Shetland pony, a Llama, and an a.... a donkey.

Phew, I think that's all I wanted to say. Night everybody! blanket.gif

Here's an IR shot from early this morning. Same view only at night. The color is gone and it's almost a negative the way it appears, but again, details can be easily seen, especially in my yard which is where I'm interested in. The car, blob of light behind the foreground tree, is almost a quarter mile away and about to make a right turn at the end of our street. If you look carefully on the right, between our driveway and our neighbors driveway, you can see some parallel lines that are the tire tracks from the comedian in the offroad incident. He went right through a circular flower bed, surrounded with river rocks, in the middle of our lawn and kept going almost to the end of the camera view through all the other yards as well.

The IR light, itself, is visible at night. It appears as a dull red circle about two inches in diameter. To me, it kind of looks like a dull red eye. I suspect that if someone is not familiar with IR lighting for cameras it would be mistaken for some kind of pilot light on a piece of equipment.

Celt - I had a bad algebra teacher, as well. We called him Mr. Pick-and-flick since he liked to pick his nose in class. I pretty much failed algebra that year. Geometry, I did really well at. Go figure.

The camera really does take some good pictures, awsum. You are so handy.

I am exhausted. Spring is rough. It is supposed to be windy today so I think I will mostly rest up and get fit for the rest of the week's activities. Tomorrow, the dogs go in to be spayed. They don't trust the car and I haven't had enough time to convince them that going in the car will be treat filled fun so wish me luck tomorrow morning.

Celtic, I'm glad you think so highly of my teaching abilities. I certainly try hard to make things interesting.

I don't have a teaching degree, either. Maybe you can learn a few techniques in college, but mainly, teaching takes imagination and empathy, and I don't think you can teach that. I've always enjoyed teaching, and I think I'm good at it. Most of my experience is teaching people to ride a horse. But I'm good at English, so I figure if I know something, and the kids don't, I can find a way to teach it to them.

A lot of what I wind up teaching is about the world around them. For instance, I was surprised that the boy, who just turned 9 last month, didn't know anything about murder. He didn't know that sometimes people kill other people. This came up in our discussion of what a judge is, court trials, and various crimes that when people are caught, then they would have a trial. I mentioned murder and stealing, and he said, "What's murder?" I thought he just didn't know the English word, but no, he didn't even know it could happen. Then we discussed capital punishment, ways people are executed for serious crimes like murder. We had already discussed hanging when he read that people were hung for harboring runaway slaves. So I mentioned that. He asked, "Do they still hang people?" I said it's still on the books in a couple of states, but I don't think they hang people much anymore. So he asked how they executed people now, and I briefly explained electrocution and lethal injection. He shuddered. I sure hope I didn't give him a reason for nightmares. Should I have mentioned these ugly facts? I think so. It's important for him to begin learning what goes on in the world.

We have also mentioned God. I taught them the story of Noah's Ark, since it gets mentioned a lot, and I thought they should know what it's about. I am not going to indoctrinate them about Christianity, but they should know about it. So we discussed whether there's a God, and what God might be like. I said some people believe, and some don't, and it's up to each person to make up his/her own mind. The boy decided God was a story, and the girl said she believed in God. I told them that their opinions could change as they got older.

We also discussed things like whether there are beings on other planets. I said that with the millions of stars out there, each one a sun, some of which have planets, there's a likelihood that other creatures exist on some of them. Why would we be the only ones? But those creatures might be very different from us, and we can't be sure they're there.

At one point, when we were discussing reality vs. myth, probably when we learned about leprechauns, I said, "Seeing is believing." The boy pointed out that none of us have ever seen the Great Wall of China, so maybe it doesn't exist. Good point. But I said I believed it did, because I've seen so many photographs and heard of people who have seen it.

Is this learning English? No. But it causes the kids to think, and discussions are in English, so it is practice speaking in English. I'm careful to not tell them how to think, only to bring up ideas to think about.

The only thing I really have said emphatically is that lying, cheating, and stealing is bad. I think it's universally accepted that honesty is the best policy to the point where I can just state that as fact.

Soon, we'll get back to more innocent subjects, like what a dugong is. Oh yes. I have a thing on climate change for the boy to read, too. He knew nothing of that, and it's another thing that's in the public consciousness to the point where I think he should learn about it. Of course, in our preliminary discussion, pollution came up, and I'll probably mention recycling in that lesson when we get to it. I haven't printed anything out about it yet.

My problem is not these philosophical discussions but how to get them to study their vocab words. Going over a list of new words that they don't know the meaning of and can't pronounce isn't much fun, but it's got to be done. I wish I could think up a way to make it fun.

BTW, both kids have trouble with the th sound. They've been pronouncing it like f. Last lesson, the boy actually got it! But he went right back to his old habit after trying. I said, "I know it's easier to say it the wrong way because you're used to it, and the new, right way seems funny, but you have to keep trying till it gets familiar." I'm thinking of having a list of words with the th sound and getting the kids to read them off, being careful to pronounce the sound correctly. I'm not sure how much fun that'll be, but I'll try it and see if they'll be interested. I also thought of tongue twisters to improve their diction, but I'm not sure if even the boy is ready for that yet.

If any of you have ideas on how to make the vocab lists more fun, I'm all ears.

I don't do arithmetic well. Give me a calculator, and I can do quite well in mathematics. Geometry was so logical. It was fun-- I know, I have a warped definition of fun.

I'm not a math person, either, but I, too, did well in geometry. It was like solving puzzles, which I like. I remember proving triangles congruent using postulates. So much for math. I use a calculator and manage to balance my checkbook each month when the bank statement arrives. Sometimes there's blood, sweat, and tears, but eventually, it gets balanced.

    THANKS

AND - Please "borrow" all "you" want, especially since I "Stole" them "Myself" right off the Internet . . .

Now although "You" didn't ask, I can see that Ya' are still having some problem attaching images to a post using the option available via ECF Controls . . . Here is another way that is easier . . .

There is alot "You" can do on ECF using BCCodes that Ya' Can find here: http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/misc.php?do=bbcode

AND - "You" will also need to upload the images Ya' want to post to an Image Posting Site, like either Photobucket: http://photobucket.com/ or Tinypic: TinyPic - Free Image Hosting, Photo Sharing & Video Hosting

NOW- First of all "You" want to be in the "GO ADVANCE" Option when Ya' Start the post . . .

    Type the following . . .

Then when "You" add the pictures from Photobucket copy and paste the "Direct Link" option of the photo to the middle of the image brackets or if "You" want save the following and then Copy and Paste this line below into "Your" Post for every Picture/Image 'You" want to add:

    START > > > > > >

    Tinypic"Direct Link"Here

    < < < < < < END

Then hit preview they should show up so "You" can make sure they are there before posting . . .

"You" can also center them by using this bracket [ enter the word center then close bracket ] on one side then repeat but add a forward slash / after the [ then the word centerand finish with the ] bracket . . . Hope that is understandable . . . ;)

If Not - Open this post as though you were going to quote it and "You" can see what I mean by looking at the image I am posting below . . .

Rave, you mentioned upgrading surveillance. Here's a capture I just took from my camera. The camera faces west-northwest and the field of view is out to about a quarter mile. Keep in mind it's after sundown and the IR system still hasn't come on.

Lizzie, here's some of what's left of the snow.

Here's an IR shot from early this morning. Same view only at night. The color is gone and it's almost a negative the way it appears, but again, details can be easily seen, especially in my yard which is where I'm interested in. Hey Awsum - Very nice system that you have there! The resolution on mine is probably not quite as fine as yours. The system that I am currently installing was a gift meant to supplement an existing system.

The vast majority of the CCTV systems available do not have audio as an option. Apparently, there is a law that forbids combining audio and video on a system that records. But, I really wanted the audio first and foremost. I want to hear the woods during the day and night. The months and days that I have to close the house up drive me crazy. Having the audio lets me feel as if I'm out in the woods. I can hear the leaves crunching and know to look at the monitor to see what's passing through, or hear a car coming up the driveway and know who it is. So, I have six cameras with that feature. They also have IR so I can watch and hear while in bed at night. No video capture on those. Yet. Ve haf vays! As an added bonus, with this audio/video/IR system, I'll be able to watch the Acadian flycatchers that are currently thinking about building a nest on my front porch light again this year. I'll be able to watch the entire cycle from eggs to leaving the nest.

The new system that I finished running in last night has recording capabilities and split screen viewing, IR, and motion detection. I haven't managed to get all of the cameras positioned and working yet. Still haven't set it up with the motion detectors to grab images of anything (or anyone) moving through, but I plan to do that today. I also haven't tested video capture. It's a process! Mine is not wireless, so hauling cables up and down muddy ravines through thickets of vengeful briars is a task. I'll bury the cables when I'm sure that everything is where I want it.

Change in plans: I talked with the nurse at my doctor's office and explained my very negative reaction to that gel concoction. She tells me that the cortisone shots have completely different pharmaceutical makeup, and I will not react the same way at all. I won't be going in on Thursday for the Cortisone shots though. I've rescheduled my appointment so that I can have my daughter drive me. It's an hour and a half away from home. Better safe than sorry.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY RAVE!

I know this probably isn't the best birthday you've ever had with all the pain you've gone through and other stuff cluttering up your mind so think of my visit as my birthday gift to you. I know it will be a couple months late but what the hell. :p If it was warmer I'd leave today and surprise you (or horrify you). :?: You've been a good friend and I am proud to know you. Have a great day if you can. :)
