Here's an IR shot from early this morning. Same view only at night. The color is gone and it's almost a negative the way it appears, but again, details can be easily seen, especially in my yard which is where I'm interested in. The car, blob of light behind the foreground tree, is almost a quarter mile away and about to make a right turn at the end of our street. If you look carefully on the right, between our driveway and our neighbors driveway, you can see some parallel lines that are the tire tracks from the comedian in the offroad incident. He went right through a circular flower bed, surrounded with river rocks, in the middle of our lawn and kept going almost to the end of the camera view through all the other yards as well.

The IR light, itself, is visible at night. It appears as a dull red circle about two inches in diameter. To me, it kind of looks like a dull red eye. I suspect that if someone is not familiar with IR lighting for cameras it would be mistaken for some kind of pilot light on a piece of equipment.

I too am impressed the with video quality of this camera. If I lived out in the woods I would sure want one of those too, maybe more than one.

Celt - I had a bad algebra teacher, as well. We called him Mr. Pick-and-flick since he liked to pick his nose in class. I pretty much failed algebra that year. Geometry, I did really well at. Go figure.

The camera really does take some good pictures, awsum. You are so handy.

I am exhausted. Spring is rough. It is supposed to be windy today so I think I will mostly rest up and get fit for the rest of the week's activities. Tomorrow, the dogs go in to be spayed. They don't trust the car and I haven't had enough time to convince them that going in the car will be treat filled fun so wish me luck tomorrow morning.

 That brought back memories. I had a history teacher that did the same thing. GROSS! 8-o

I did great in algebra but geometry??? My teacher told me that he would give me a D so I wouldn't fail if I got out. It was like greek to me. I don't need, use or even remember algebra so that was a total waste of time but it got me to graduation.

I don't do arithmetic well. Give me a calculator, and I can do quite well in mathematics. Geometry was so logical. It was fun-- I know, I have a warped definition of fun.

Same here. I do fine with a calculator but I can't do simple math in my head. I can't see numbers in my head. I have a calculator on my phone and on my desk and a BF that is a human calculator so that's all I need.

Celtic, I'm glad you think so highly of my teaching abilities. I certainly try hard to make things interesting.

I don't have a teaching degree, either. Maybe you can learn a few techniques in college, but mainly, teaching takes imagination and empathy, and I don't think you can teach that. I've always enjoyed teaching, and I think I'm good at it. Most of my experience is teaching people to ride a horse. But I'm good at English, so I figure if I know something, and the kids don't, I can find a way to teach it to them.

A lot of what I wind up teaching is about the world around them. For instance, I was surprised that the boy, who just turned 9 last month, didn't know anything about murder. He didn't know that sometimes people kill other people. This came up in our discussion of what a judge is, court trials, and various crimes that when people are caught, then they would have a trial. I mentioned murder and stealing, and he said, "What's murder?" I thought he just didn't know the English word, but no, he didn't even know it could happen. Then we discussed capital punishment, ways people are executed for serious crimes like murder. We had already discussed hanging when he read that people were hung for harboring runaway slaves. So I mentioned that. He asked, "Do they still hang people?" I said it's still on the books in a couple of states, but I don't think they hang people much anymore. So he asked how they executed people now, and I briefly explained electrocution and lethal injection. He shuddered. I sure hope I didn't give him a reason for nightmares. Should I have mentioned these ugly facts? I think so. It's important for him to begin learning what goes on in the world.

We have also mentioned God. I taught them the story of Noah's Ark, since it gets mentioned a lot, and I thought they should know what it's about. I am not going to indoctrinate them about Christianity, but they should know about it. So we discussed whether there's a God, and what God might be like. I said some people believe, and some don't, and it's up to each person to make up his/her own mind. The boy decided God was a story, and the girl said she believed in God. I told them that their opinions could change as they got older.

We also discussed things like whether there are beings on other planets. I said that with the millions of stars out there, each one a sun, some of which have planets, there's a likelihood that other creatures exist on some of them. Why would we be the only ones? But those creatures might be very different from us, and we can't be sure they're there.

At one point, when we were discussing reality vs. myth, probably when we learned about leprechauns, I said, "Seeing is believing." The boy pointed out that none of us have ever seen the Great Wall of China, so maybe it doesn't exist. Good point. But I said I believed it did, because I've seen so many photographs and heard of people who have seen it.

Is this learning English? No. But it causes the kids to think, and discussions are in English, so it is practice speaking in English. I'm careful to not tell them how to think, only to bring up ideas to think about.

The only thing I really have said emphatically is that lying, cheating, and stealing is bad. I think it's universally accepted that honesty is the best policy to the point where I can just state that as fact.

Soon, we'll get back to more innocent subjects, like what a dugong is. Oh yes. I have a thing on climate change for the boy to read, too. He knew nothing of that, and it's another thing that's in the public consciousness to the point where I think he should learn about it. Of course, in our preliminary discussion, pollution came up, and I'll probably mention recycling in that lesson when we get to it. I haven't printed anything out about it yet.

My problem is not these philosophical discussions but how to get them to study their vocab words. Going over a list of new words that they don't know the meaning of and can't pronounce isn't much fun, but it's got to be done. I wish I could think up a way to make it fun.

BTW, both kids have trouble with the th sound. They've been pronouncing it like f. Last lesson, the boy actually got it! But he went right back to his old habit after trying. I said, "I know it's easier to say it the wrong way because you're used to it, and the new, right way seems funny, but you have to keep trying till it gets familiar." I'm thinking of having a list of words with the th sound and getting the kids to read them off, being careful to pronounce the sound correctly. I'm not sure how much fun that'll be, but I'll try it and see if they'll be interested. I also thought of tongue twisters to improve their diction, but I'm not sure if even the boy is ready for that yet.

If any of you have ideas on how to make the vocab lists more fun, I'm all ears.

You have the patience of a saint. I couldn't do what you do. I admire that.

Change in plans: I talked with the nurse at my doctor's office and explained my very negative reaction to that gel concoction. She tells me that the cortisone shots have completely different pharmaceutical makeup, and I will not react the same way at all. I won't be going in on Thursday for the Cortisone shots though. I've rescheduled my appointment so that I can have my daughter drive me. It's an hour and a half away from home. Better safe than sorry.

I sure hope you don't have a reaction to that shot. It scares me now after what I've heard. I'm glad you won't be driving, smart move. If the shot works you'll feel like a whole new person. I sure hope the nurse knows what she's talking about.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY RAVE!

I know this probably isn't the best birthday you've ever had with all the pain you've gone through and other stuff cluttering up your mind so think of my visit as my birthday gift to you. I know it will be a couple months late but what the hell. :p If it was warmer I'd leave today and surprise you (or horrify you). :?: You've been a good friend and I am proud to know you. Have a great day if you can. :)

Awww - Thanks Terry!! You're so thoughtful. Can't wait until you come to visit. It'll be great. :D

Actually, I lucked out. It isn't hurtin' today, but then, I haven't had to heft a ton of firewood since it's been so warm yesterday and today. It usually only gets to me when I lift, but then it stays bad for a few days. So - I'm good today! :)

Yeah - I'm nervous too.

I just got back from a visit to Penny (my horse). She is still shedding, though not the huge gobs that I got out last time. Maybe it was because I did a really thorough job grooming her last time. It's really warm today -- mid 50s -- but I put her lightweight blanket back on because it'll get colder, and tomorrow the forecast says ice pellets and then snow. I felt bad putting that blanket back on when it's so warm right now.

Penny got a new pasture mate today: a new boarder named Gigi. Of course, after some unfriendly squeals, she went over to the fence to stand next to her old friends on the other side of the fence. I sure hope she and Gigi get along and become friends. I don't want her in with Petey and the other new horse, Sunny, when she comes into heat. They are already very attached to her, so there's likely to be a problem getting her out of that pasture. Even so, I'll have to take her through a small area of their pasture to get her out of hers, but there's a gate I can shut to keep them out of that area if necessary.

@ "RAVEN" - Just as an FYI: I had those "Cortisone" shots a number of years ago for the "Degenerative Arthritis" I was experiencing at the time in "My" knees . . . AND - While where they had to put the needle (which was behind the knee cap) was extremely painful to say the least, in the end they did help "Me" - of course "YMMV", however I really do hope they help "You" too . . .

YES - "Celticluvr" is getting quite good . . .

However, they are not showing up as images for "Me" unless I click on the "Red X": Click Image for larger version" then they will open in another smaller window . . . Just Sayin' . . .

I can see it now … giving Uncle a run for the money with the smileys.

Happy Birthday Rave! I hope you're having a wonderful, comfortable day. I thought you might like a nice raven video.

Hi everyone! I am still lurking around, I guess I'm quite uninspired to post anything. There isn't much going on for me to share, but if anything interesting happens, I will be sure to write about it! :)
