Is her name Willie? I thought it was Winnie.

If they were worn out, they are happy. Do you think they are out of shape from being cooped up, or did they do a lot of racing around to wear them out? I'm so glad they seem to be settling in. They are probably really happy to be together again.

Willie...Winnie... I might have to pick another name. Winnie sounds too much like Penny so I started calling her Willie:)

I asked google about changing a dog's name. Interesting opinions. Definitely good to move away from something that sounds like Penny. If the dog has bad memories about the previous name, it is good to change. Similarity should be the beginning or the end of the name. So you are probably going in the right direction. We changed our dog's name from Cha-Chi to Sashi, and she did not appear to notice the difference. Evidently they have not run any experiments on canine auditory discrim for human speech.

From what I've read, dogs only pick up the last syllable/word. That's why all commands should be one word. For example, "come here", the dog only interprets the "here".

Hi gang, it's nice to see everyone chit-chatting here. I think I have a case of cabin fever but we just keep collecting snow! It wouldn't be so bad if it would melt away between snowstorms, but temps have not gone up enough for a thaw since, umm, I really can't remember. We had such a mild winter last year, it makes this winter seem so much worse. "whine"

Yep, I'm ready for Spring, please and thank you......our plow can't lift the snow any higher than it's already piled up.

Yesterday afternoon, through a window, not really sure if that is (hopefully) glare on the glass or dog slobber, sorry

Wow! You really got hit. I love your place and the way the house is nestled in the woods. Now I'm jealous. But you can keep the snow. LOL!

I always wondered how much a dog understood. Here's something that made me think they understood more than I had believed. We had a dog named Rowley when we lived in NYC. He loved going for walks, and when it was time to walk him and it was my daughter's turn, I'd say, "Time to walk the dog," and he'd go crazy, running in excited circles. I thought maybe it was the context or the tone of voice or whatever, but one day we took Rowley with us when we went to visit a guy he didn't know. My daughter had a friend along, and the friend had a yo-yo. The guy we were visiting asked the girl if she could do any yo-yo tricks, like walk the dog, and Rowley went into his usual berserk mode when he heard that. So he obviously knew the words, even said by a stranger and totally out of context.

I don't know if horses are similar to dogs in their understanding, but Penny knows eat and treat mean I'll probably be offering a carrot or letting her graze. Then one day I told her I was going to clean out her feet. When she heard "feet," she started looking around for a treat. So horses understand rhymes, but the consonant in front of the word is probably less discernible to them. To Penny, feet, eat, and treat all sounded the same.

I think individual dogs and horses may vary somewhat in their ability to understand language.

Are you sure? I hate to keep it all to myself, there's plenty to share!

I'm sure. We had a real mild winter last year so I was sure we were going to get globbered this winter but so far we've only had about 2" which melted the next day. We had a week of arctic weather last month and we are going through another less severe one now but all in all it's been pretty mild. I feel bad for you guys getting the really cold temps and snow but please keep it. :p

QRXT, they are jealous of the western Great Lakes!! Even Sandy. :D

And I am contemplating a move to California.

I don't know … What are summers like there? When we traveled across the country, we stayed at a KOA in Baudette, Minn. Its near International Falls, which I hear is supposed to be the coldest place in the US (in winter), so I expected moderate summer temperatures, but it was darned hot there. I was surprised! If I'd move to someplace colder than here in winter, I'd expect the summers to be cooler, too.

So pretty, Q.

It is hard to say what dogs hear when you speak. Even humans have a hard time understanding one another:)

I could probably change her name to anything and Willie would get used to it.

I changed the horse's name from Junior to Nevada and I am pretty sure he doesn't care.

Individual words are understood if they are taught what they mean but some dogs have a limit. I'll have to tell you about Lucky sometime.
