Lizzie, we had a problem with iron in the water as well as manganese which was turning our clothes orange along with the inside of the washer and dishwasher, We had a filter but it wasn't cutting it. I put in a Terminox filter with a chlorine injector, from Budget Water, ahead of it to make sure there is no problem with iron bacteria, which wreck filter media. Our water is easily as good as, and probably better than, any bottled water out there and our clothes and appliances aren't orange any more. It wasn't all that expensive and maintenance is very minimal, probably the best money we've spent on the house so far.

Really? Are there deep gorges with lots of waterfalls? Is the rock shale? Lots of fossils in it? Can you name some specific places so I can look them up on the Internet?

Now for a man's take on this: Your fridge died, your food was getting spoiled, you bought a new fridge, food is cold again.

Lizzie, that was a really good deal on the fridge that you got (I know, cuz I've been wanting the smaller version, which is more expensive ). Hand-me-down fridges aren't usually worth it, cuz look what happened: it died. But had it lived, you would've been eating what you saved with more electricity (fridge manufacturers are required to make them more energy-efficient every year) and convenience (new fridges have more bins and compartments to help you organize your food better).

...how's that for rationalizing your new purchase?

I am definitely looking forwards to having an extra bin built into the fridge. Also, the gallons of milk can go in the door! This fridge also has a deli tray/pizza drawer inside the fridge. I can store cheese in there since we don't really ever have deli trays. Should be really nice to keep the fridge well organized

How is everyone's weather. We were at 94 degrees yesterday.

We still managed to sit outside and enjoy our shade cover in the evening. The heat isn't as bad when you don't have to sit in the sun!

I have to clean a house today and then go buy spackle to do some minor wall repairs.

Let's see...it says 87 on my outside thermometer with 51% humidity, actually kind of dry for here. Yesterday we went to a girls lacrosse meet, my wife's nephews daughter was playing, and got toasted nicely in bright sun and temps in the mid 80's. The rest of the week is supposed to be hot and humid with "high heat warnings" out and a lot of hand wringing about kids and people with no AC. I don't know how us "oldsters" managed to survive without "high heat warnings", cool down locations and AC. Maybe there is something to be said for common sense, beats me?

I was amazed at the size of that lacrosse meet. It was LAX which raises funds for breast cancer. My guess is that there were about 100 teams playing on a total of 20 or so fields that occupied well over 100 acres. We ended up walking the whole place to find her nephew. Mrs. Awsums nephew was leaving from here, they live on Long Island, and going to another meet tomorrow in Maryland. From there it's on to Denver for another meet. And this is all volunteer stuff although there were a lot of college recruiters there looking for prospects.

We've never gone to a lacrosse match or watched it previously. We both enjoyed it a lot, even though we were being slowly broasted the whole time. It's a fast game and those young women seemed to be pretty good at it. I want to look at the rules so I can understand, better, what all the nuances are, like using the "yellow card game", LOL.

Sandy, when we were in that area years ago, we stopped at a place called Quechee Gorge. It's a really deep gorge with a bridge over it that we walked across to enjoy the view. I believe it is in Vermont.

I think the major difference is that the gorges in NH and VT are in granite formations versus the shale at Watkins Glen. They're all awesome (see, I know how to really spell it) to look at and just think about how much water has been running for how long to produce those gorges in the first place, no matter what kind of rock is involved.

That looks like a lovely place to walk. It's a lot more expensive than Watkins Glen, though. There, last I did it, it was $6 to park your car, and there's plenty of free parking on the streets around if you want to save that charge and walk a couple of extra blocks. That's what we did this last time. And if you want a ride either up or back in the shuttle, that's $3 for adults, and both kids rode free.

I heard you weren't supposed to store eggs in the fridge door. Something about it swinging moved the eggs around inside their shells too much. But I didn't know about milk. However, because of the amount of space on my fridge door, both get stored in the main part.

You're right about the geology.

And if you really want to contemplate a lot of water, Niagara Falls has them all beat! Last time I was there, some years ago, that very thought hit me. Just looking at all that water flowing, and knowing it's going day and night, was really mind-blowing!

Yes, but Awsum's right. The rock in New England is very different from the shale that our gorges are made of. We are too far west to be considered part of the Appalachians. That would be the Catskills and Adirondacks, which are way east of us.

It's one of the many New Hampshire tourist attractions, Sandy. That's probably why it's expensive. Gouge the tourists. lol
