Good moring, Vpltnics.

Well, hoping that will be the last of your snow and spring is well on its way to you guys, Zero and SandySu.

Lightning? Isn't that kind of rare during a snow storm, Terry?

Rain, Trit, you are so lucky.

Well, Hubby and I were talking about the wood look tile and we are back to laminate flooring being our best option for the modular home.

We had a rough day yesterday. We went to the home hardware store and Hubby started talking about buying a metal pipe for a project I want done. I said "What? We need a PVC pipe, 3/4" diameter and 10' long to do this little project." So, we ended up not get any supplies for the project so he could think about it. Darn it.

Your nearest hydrogen bomb.
I had a lightning strike on a mountain during a frozen snow storm,(around 30-40meters away) we were putting chains on all 4 wheels suddenly the whole place was white then pink with the huge boom.
Then we started putting the chains as fast as we could and got out of there.

Snow was like rice, seems that the friction in frozen snowflakes generates enough to cause thunders. First time and only time i saw it happen.

Thunder snow does happen and it sure is weird when it does happen. I've seen the lightning flash followed by the boom a few times and while it's scary it's amazing and thrilling. We're used to thunder storms with rain, but with snow it is a rare treat (as long as you're not having an electrifying experience).

Sandy, here is the reason why white deer are more common in your part of the country:

"'Now another message to tell your people.

"'Now this is a thing to happen.

"'Hereafter we shall have a new species of deer. 1 The Creator will create somewhere a pair, male and female. The male deer will be spotted with white and the female striped with white over her back. This will be done and we say it.

"'Now moreover the messengers command that these animals shall never be killed."'

So they said and he said. Eniaiehuk.

Very interesting, but as far as I know, the white deer are pure white, not spotted or striped, though I read that crosses can produce spots in some cases.

My guess is that Native Americans saw some deer like this, and that engendered this belief. There are small numbers of white or multicolored deer in other parts of the country, but not in as many numbers as at the Seneca Army Depot. That's because some military higher-up decided that the occasional white deer shouldn't be killed, that they should be protected. Also, they had huge acres to roam enclosed by a high fence on military property. So they were cut off from the main deer population and protected for years. There are brown deer in there, too, but your chances of seeing white deer at dusk are pretty sure, since so many are white there. It's an interesting phenomenon of selective breeding in the wild (if the deer is brown, you can kill it; if it's white, let it live). I sure hope that the organization trying to preserve them succeeds. Now that the army gave up the land, it's open to development, and the organization is trying to have the land preserved as wilderness and the white deer protected from hunters.

Probably in respect of Native tradition-- interesting you would say Seneca, because that was H.L.'s tribe.

Very interesting that there are more white deer on the military installation.

Good morning, Voltmaniacs.

We are working like maniacs here. Fortunately, I am going to Reno today with a couple of neighbors so I will be giving the arms a bit of a rest. Of course, I will be doing some hula hoeing this morning since I am so close to eliminating the cheat grass from the yard. Naturally, there will be a small amount left no matter how hard I work it but I have done a pretty good job so far.

Hubby helped me go through the North watering zone when he got home from work. There were a couple ple of major leaks and we replaced a number of drippers. We got asparagus out of that zone on Tuesday and had our own home grown asparagus with dinner. Fun.

I went to see the boy perform in Project 4 today. He did well. He didn't need a cheat sheet and had his lines memorized, though there weren't many. I was glad to hear his diction was better than when I went to see him perform last year at school. I really work on the kids' diction, since they get lazy and don't pronounce words fully unless I insist. They often leave the final s off a plural word. Then, when they write, they don't use the plural form. I tell them that this is why I am so strict about them saying those s's.

I took lots of pictures, but at the end of the performance, the organizers asked that we not share them on the Internet, like on Facebook, to protect the other kids also in the photos. I wish I could share some with you, but I think it would be wrong. This forum is even more public than my Facebook page.

The lighting was pretty harsh, so I need to see if I can improve some of the photos. Then on Sunday, I'll take my computer to the tutoring session and we can all look at them. The ones the boy selects, I'll email to him so he has copies of them to share with whoever he wants. He may want to send them to his friend in China, one of the 2 boys who were here for just the summer, and who I tutored, too. I know that boy sent my boy a photo of himself. My boy emailed it to me.

Every Sunday, I've been reading to the kids and then having them write something about what I read to them. This last time, I asked them to write about the stories I read, whether they like them or if they want other stories, and if so, what ones. Or if they want to do something else, what we should do instead. They both said they want to do word searches again, and they want to play Scrabble. I tried that with them about a year ago, and the boy caught on, but the girl was a bit too young then. Maybe she'll be old enough now. I wonder if the littlest one will leave us alone while we play. Since I started tutoring him, he has overcome his shyness of me and often interferes in the lessons till I have to shut him out of the room till it's his turn.

So this Sunday, I'll take my computer to show the pictures I took, a Scrabble game that we can try to play, and a word search for both older kids. The little one will get his usual worksheets. He is learning to print the alphabet, and each session, he does a page of copying 2 different letters, and then I have these sheets he likes where he has to circle the same letter that appears at the left of the row. For instance, E F E G M E A E. So, in that case, he would circle all the E's and not the other letters. Sometimes he gets gung-ho and circles them all! As he does it, I say "Yes. Good boy!" if he circled the right one, and "No" if he circled a wrong one. I think he knows those words, or maybe just the tone of my voice. I talk to him in English, and if he's confused, his sister translates. He seems to be responding more to my English. I told him last week to go get his sister, and he ran upstairs, yelling her name.

Very interesting, SandySu. Sounds like the boy is making progress.

Good morning, Voltinians.

Have a cup of coffee. It's on me:)

Well, going to town with the ladies was fun. It's good to get out and laugh and have a good time. I didn't buy anything at the Habitat for Humanity store or the thrift stores since I am saving up for a shade cover for the back patio. Also, how much stuff do we need around here. The house is pretty full up as it is with furniture and dishes and doodads and such.

So, how is Penny doing, SandySu.

Good morning, Voltmaniacs.

Is everyone accomplishing their spring chores?

I am working my buns off trying to get the house clean. I need to make potato salad and chip dip today.

I still need to work on the breezeway and front porch. They need to be swept and the breezeway could use some organizing. There's probably no point in finishing the vacuuming or mopping the floor until tomorrow morning.

moanin', Voltville.

In terms of spring chores I may get started on them later today or Monday. Tomorrow we are going to Queens to visit Mrs. Awsum's family grave sites, yearly ritual, meet her family there and then go for dim sum in Queens.

The floodlight on the driveway side of the house stopped working. Yesterday, I checked the switch, OK, then got out the ladder and a new 300 watt halogen bulb. Sure enough when I took out the old bulb it fell apart on one end. Put the new one in and hit the remote for the light and nothing. Then I looked at the light and the socket on one end had arced and burned itself out. Now, I'm in a quandary. Should I just buy a new halogen fixture, relatively inexpensive, or replace it (and maybe two more) with LED lights instead. The LED stuff is very attractive, 50 watts is the equivalent of 300 to 500 watts of halogen depending on whose ratings you look at so that means 1/6 or less the power consumption. Problem is the inexpensive LED lights don't seem to be UL/CSA rated and reviews are a little mixed on them.

I'll check out Lowes later today and see what they have. They do show a CFL that is supposed to be equal to a 300-500 watt halogen, but I'm not a big fan of curly fried light bulbs.
