I went to see the boy perform in Project 4 today. He did well. He didn't need a cheat sheet and had his lines memorized, though there weren't many. I was glad to hear his diction was better than when I went to see him perform last year at school. I really work on the kids' diction, since they get lazy and don't pronounce words fully unless I insist. They often leave the final s off a plural word. Then, when they write, they don't use the plural form. I tell them that this is why I am so strict about them saying those s's.
I took lots of pictures, but at the end of the performance, the organizers asked that we not share them on the Internet, like on Facebook, to protect the other kids also in the photos. I wish I could share some with you, but I think it would be wrong. This forum is even more public than my Facebook page.
The lighting was pretty harsh, so I need to see if I can improve some of the photos. Then on Sunday, I'll take my computer to the tutoring session and we can all look at them. The ones the boy selects, I'll email to him so he has copies of them to share with whoever he wants. He may want to send them to his friend in China, one of the 2 boys who were here for just the summer, and who I tutored, too. I know that boy sent my boy a photo of himself. My boy emailed it to me.
Every Sunday, I've been reading to the kids and then having them write something about what I read to them. This last time, I asked them to write about the stories I read, whether they like them or if they want other stories, and if so, what ones. Or if they want to do something else, what we should do instead. They both said they want to do word searches again, and they want to play Scrabble. I tried that with them about a year ago, and the boy caught on, but the girl was a bit too young then. Maybe she'll be old enough now. I wonder if the littlest one will leave us alone while we play. Since I started tutoring him, he has overcome his shyness of me and often interferes in the lessons till I have to shut him out of the room till it's his turn.
So this Sunday, I'll take my computer to show the pictures I took, a Scrabble game that we can try to play, and a word search for both older kids. The little one will get his usual worksheets. He is learning to print the alphabet, and each session, he does a page of copying 2 different letters, and then I have these sheets he likes where he has to circle the same letter that appears at the left of the row. For instance, E F E G M E A E. So, in that case, he would circle all the E's and not the other letters. Sometimes he gets gung-ho and circles them all! As he does it, I say "Yes. Good boy!" if he circled the right one, and "No" if he circled a wrong one. I think he knows those words, or maybe just the tone of my voice. I talk to him in English, and if he's confused, his sister translates. He seems to be responding more to my English. I told him last week to go get his sister, and he ran upstairs, yelling her name.
