Long gone are the days of an SSN being just between a person and the government. My card says not for identification purposes, but that hasn't been on newer cards for a long time. A persons SSN is easier to come by than their favorite color.
I would not trust them with my information period. I bet you also have to agree to having parts of your info sold or replicated in some form or fashion. No thanks. Unless they change their business model to accommodate the consumer, I am not interested.
So glad I am set and don't NEED anything.
Electronically submitting Name, supposed age or DOB, and the last 4 of SSN returns true or false to the vendors software at paid age verification services.
Not all vendors are using the same software, sites that require that much information I will just stay clear of. There are major vendors using no non-sense software that just requires a picture or scan of an ID.
Anything requiring that much info I suggest everyone stay away from that vendor, in case of a breach they have 2/3 components they need to ruin your life (oh and a partial of the third).
Then they need to change their software.
People's SSNs have been so corrupted they have nearly rendered them useless. People don't want to use them anymore. So let's get rid of them for everything except what they were initially intended for. Which is (per our government)..

Better yet, give us the option of participating in social security (or not) so some of us don't need a SSN at all.

I have even heard that you can cover up your drivers license number before sending those scans or pics. And, although I think most states have removed your once required ssn on your license, I would cover that up also.
Here is the problem where there is a SSN a name and a DOB you can easily get an address. With that information I can have a new car delivered to my house tomorrow with all receipts going to a fake e-mail and have it delivered before you even have a clue. Happens everyday unfortunately.
Oh I agree, was just answering why they wanted them. Before they changed the numbering system knowing the name state born in, and a few other things I won't get into here along with the SSN master death file can get the number of possible numbers down to a relatively small amount computer wise.
Even the government realized this and have changed the easy to figure out format a few years ago.

Well AFAIK the amendment is still alive, so it's still pertinent, but I haven't heard anything new about the Appropriations bill in awhile.
