The public would be better served with factual news...and perhaps being taught that putting loose batteries in your pockets/purses is a dangerous thing to do.

I see what looks like multiple batteries and coins. If all that was in a pocket together that is a catastrophe waiting to happen.

Totally agree but a non-vaper could argue that vaping isn't safe because the devices can and do blow up in your pocket. If we say the batteries are the same ones used in hybrid/electric cars, one could argue that it is a very rare occurance to hear about a Tesla or Volt spontaneously combusting due to a battery issue.

It's a tough one. 18650 batteries the way we use them ARE very dangerous. Fortunately 99.99% of vapers are smart enough not to hurt themselves. It's the .001% that are dummies and make the news.

Yeah, but we aren't messing with the batteries in cars, or carrying around spares for them.

Not sure what you mean.

The batteries we use ARE intended for cars.... and power tools and many other devices. Vaping didn't cross their mind when LG, Sony and Samsung came up with 18650's as a standard.

Also, many of the thermal runaway or venting batteries I have heard about have been due to spare batteries not covered in pockets with change/keys.

Here's an example of an application that 18650's are generally made for.... Tesla battery pack. Very likely LG HG2's in a protected configuration....

I realize what the other uses are for the 18650's. What I'm saying is, that for those other uses, we don't carry around spares in our pockets, or otherwise mess with them.

Hate to say i agree, but you are dead on. If he didn't vape, he wouldn't have nearly BBQ'ed his nads.

If a Samsung phone blew in someone's pants, it would make the news just as big.

I don't care, but at a glance it looks like he had a 3 batt mod, 2 extra batteries and change in his pocket. Not smart.

Having said all that, who the hell can fit a Releaux with an atty and extra batteries in a front pocket anyways?!?!:w00t:

I wonder if he'll sue "Now I can't father children anymore"

I wonder who he'll sue.

It was obviously the coins' fault. They contained no warning. Our coins can be made of non-conductive material. WTF!

Edit: Really, the censor edits a three letter acronym that starts with WT. Who is that sensitive and still functions enough to read a forum post?

Feel free to guess what caused it....

I've only seen this picture provided in one of the articles, and I don't think there was a caption. Was this picture actually the aftermath of this particular incident, or was it added to the article by the editor for visual impact?

Can some please name the media sources (no links, please) that had this picture or something like it included in their coverage? Thanks!

Using the TinEye crawler, the first use of that image appears to have been by nydailynews .com on 11/23.

It's a still from the surveillance video. the original can be found on NBC New York news, as well as other media by this point. I'd give you the link but you asked not to.

Thank you both for the information. The only reason I didn't want links is because most of these outlets are skewing the facts of the story and I didn't want to drive more traffic (and more ad revenue) to their sites. If you feel they are being fair in their coverage, then please ignore my request.

I read the article on nydaily news and found the article to be sensationalized, as usual.

It's TV news, and you expect them to be fair in reporting?

Actually, I just watched the video and didn't even pay attention to the voiceover. I'm sure there must be some interview quote like "I never knew that could happen!".

Expect? No. But it would be nice to be pleasantly surprised and see some occasional journalistic integrity (dreaming, I know).

Ok...knock it off and get back on topic please

Regardless of how it happened, a person was injured.

Apologies. I just realized that there is a dedicated thread for this story that would have been more appropriate for my questions.

If a Samsung phone blew in someone's pants, it would make the news just as big.

They do all the time. ;)

And macbooks
And iphones
And laptops

And rarely make the news before the recall.

Which is done on a cost/benefit analysis.

If it'll cost less to settle the suits than to repair/replace the product (or not) then the product stays on the market.

How many Samsung Galaxy Note sevens were just recalled? $600,000,000 worth?

And Volvo just had a recall on several hundred thousand 18 wheelers that could lose steering sending them anywhere uncontrolled a couple months ago.

Nobody batted an eye.

Vaping is a new target with no established defense with gooberment and big $ special interest backing the antis and manipulating the media. ;)
