There is a tax on Snapple of 10.25% like everything else in Chicago that I can think of.

GOOGLE: As Chicagoans rang in the New Year, Cook County ushered in the highest sales tax in the nation. Chicago is the county seat of Cook County, whose officials voted in July to raise the county's portion of the sales tax, bringing Chicago's combined rate to 10.25 percent from 9.25 percent.

We have the highest tax in the nation.
So no milk tax. Thought so.

I think you are missing the point. There is sales tax and then there is a sin tax added on top of the sales tax. Some states don't charge sales tax for food (Arkansas does). I wouldn't be adverse to normal sales tax but I will fight tooth and nail against sin taxes being charged for something that isn't a sin no matter how the powers that be try to twist it.

So no milk tax. Thought so.

Depends on where you buy it.

GOOGLE: When meal taxes are combined with sales taxes, the cities with the highest taxes on meals are Minneapolis (10.775%), Chicago (10.75%), Virginia Beach (10.5%), Seattle (10.0%) and Washington, DC (10.0%). By contrast, Portland, Oregon doesn't have a sales tax or a meal tax.

We are fighting an uphill battle to protect vaping. They are aligning vaping with tobacco(a known carcinogen) and they need the tax monies for their pet projects. How bad is it?

Why all the taxes: Chicago, Cook County and Illinois? B/c Democrats control all three for last 55 years, and they are in debt; $1+ billion in Chicago and just passed a $1 billion dollar property tax increase; somewhere btw $3 and $20 billion at Chicago Schools depending on what you read and need $1+ billion just to consider opening schools in the fall; $3.5+ billion in Cook County; $10+ billion at State of Illinois. All the bonds for most of these agencies are JUNK or one level above.

QUOTE: Crain's Chicago: each Chicago household now facing average liabilities of $87,720, and each suburban household $35,774.

That doesn’t even include similar amounts owed for each of the debts of Cook County government, Illinois government, and the federal government.

They are fighting over the budget at the state level to support the schools right now. They are afraid that schools state-wide will not open on time, or would have support for only a couple of months in to the next year.

QUOTE: Chicago Tribune: Illinois' public school districts are roughly $20 billion in debt, a staggering figure fueled in part by decades of special deals in Springfield [by Democratically controlled State] that have given districts exemptions so they can keep borrowing beyond limits set by law.

Chicago would be worse than Detroit, and some are trying to avoid that, but the Democrats (controlled at state level by Michael Madigan) just passed a budget that was almost $10 billion over income and was vetoed by governor.

I read both articles linked. Are you trying to prove a conspiracy between FDA and Big Tobacco by linking to articles where a judge ruled three members of the committee have a conflict of interest, as a result of a complaint actually filed by big tobacco ( Lorillard ) !?

Again, where is the conspiracy ?

While I haven't followed this line closely, you're right. The bias was within the anti-tobacco group.

Obeying Court Order, FDA Revamps Tobacco Panel

WASHINGTON -- " Four members of its Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee (TPSAC) were dismissed or have resigned, the FDA said, following a federal court decision last year that they were too cozy with anti-tobacco interests. [same people that are after ecigs]

"Leon's decision came in a lawsuit filed in 2011 by tobacco manufacturer Lorillard. The firm argued, and Leon agreed, that some members of the committee had unacceptable conflicts of interest because of their relationships with companies that make tobacco-cessation products and/or were working with litigants in anti-tobacco lawsuits."

Rosamond Rhodes, PhD,
professor of medical education and director of bioethics education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, in New York City, said that conflicts of interests have been demonstrated in multiple studies and are common in research fields.

The last of which we've seen many times - the junk science wrt formaldehyde, diacetyl and 'particles' - the machines used, the use of them that has no relation to the way people vape, and the "no threshold" theory of carcinogens - where it only gets worse when new and improved instruments can calculate to the trillionth part (and beyond) where any molecule of a carcinogen or a co-carcinogen/"promoter of tumors" is considered carcinogenic/"harmful" when there are no products that could escape that determination.

My family fully understands the government conspiracy card. Most governmental decisions are tainted (or outright giveaways) towards those in power in return for other things. My Father who was as straight as the day is long was in government (local) for most of his life and he fought corruption and they ostracized him whenever and however they could. When he stopped the local French's plant from having the address 1 Mustard Way and that same week stopped a paving and curbing project in front a council members trucking firm because it wasn't necessary they couldn't fire him but they did a lateral movement and he made more money than his new boss but was 2 steps down in power level. As he said, "If they get that address then JQ Public that builds a house gets to pick their address also and a new street if he wants it". Moma wanted to make a stink but he only had 5 years to full retirement. He took early retirement when the officer that arrested a councilman's son was forced to quit or be fired the first time he sneezed wrong. :-x

Why all the taxes in Chicago, Cook County and Illinois? B/c Democrats control all three for last 55 years, and they are in debt; $1+ billion in Chicago; $1.5 billion at Chicago Schools; $1.5 billion in Cook County; $10 billion at State of Illinois. All the bonds for most of these agencies are JUNK or one level above.

They are fighting over the budget to support the schools right now. They are afraid that schools state-wide will not open on time, or would have support for only a couple of months in to the next year.

I think @mattiem covered my thoughts exactly. Nothing more to add.

mental health...so now vaping makes you crazy?

Just the opposite:

Hidden Benefits Of Nicotine on The Brain

ADHD: There is evidence dating back to the 1990s suggesting that nicotine may be useful for treating various symptoms of ADHD (attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder).

Antidepressant: Nicotine has been well-documented as eliciting antidepressant effects in both humans and animals.

Anxiolytic: It is known that nicotine also can decrease levels of anxiety in humans and animals.

Cognitive enhancement: Nicotine has been well-documented for its ability to enhance cognitive function and overall performance.

Neurodegenerative diseases: There is mounting evidence to suggest that nicotine may not only prevent development of various neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. dementia), but it may help treat symptoms among those that are already suffering from neurodegeneration. A study published in the year 2000 suggested that nicotinic receptors should be studied for their influence on CNS functions, specifically related to Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.

Neuroprotective agent: Evidence has been suggesting since the 1990s that nicotine may protect the brain from neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

Performance enhancement: Many people use nicotine as a performance enhancing drug, whether it be cognitively, physically, or a combination of both.

Relaxation: Many smokers claim that having a cigarette “relaxes” them. To those that are aware of the stimulatory properties of nicotine, this may sound like nonsense. However, nicotine appears to provide calming effects in a number of ways, including via modification of neurotransmitter levels, particularly dopamine and serotonin.

Schizophrenia: Those with schizophrenia often have severe cognitive deficits or impairment. It is widely established that many individuals with schizophrenia self-medicate with nicotine. One reason for such self-medication is that nicotine may help ameliorate the cognitive symptoms of schizophrenia, improving a person’s ability to learn, remember, and function.

There's more... and with the links to the mainly ncbi.nlm.nih.gov studies.

People have and they are claiming ignorance.
"The Authority has an annual operating budget of approximately $700 million including approximately $11 million in federal grants."
"One Hundred percent (100%) of the Authority’s receipts are received by ACH from the State of Michigan, federal government and Wayne County. The Authority’s primary receipts are the State General Fund and Medicaid revenue, which come monthly on or about the 10th and 21st of each month respectively."

The governor is making the state legislature clean up their own mess and they wont do it.

That was appalling. Is this a government organization using tax money to spread lies?
I guess Wayne County is awash in property tax revenue & they have a shortage of people with legitimate mental health issues?
