Perhaps our senators share admin assistants.

I wrote a detailed account of how vaping helped me quit smoking and my feelings about how the deeming regulations will negatively impact current smokers and small businesses. One would think that my knowledge on the topic was bloody obvious.

Dear Ms. ****:

Thank you for contacting me about the regulation of tobacco products by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). I appreciate hearing from you.

Electronic cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes, are battery-operated products designed to deliver nicotine, flavor, and other chemicals. They turn nicotine, which is highly addictive, and other chemicals into a vapor that is inhaled by the user. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, e-cigarette use among middle school and high school students has increased significantly in recent years. For instance, in 2011, only 1.5 percent of high school students reported that they had used e-cigarettes, but by 2015, that figure had increased dramatically to 16 percent.

As you may know, the FDA regulates both the safety and the effectiveness of human drugs, biologics (e.g., vaccines, blood, and blood components), medical devices, and animal drugs. As the safety and efficacy of e-cigarettes have not been fully studied, consumers of e-cigarette products currently have no way of knowing whether e-cigarettes are safe, what chemicals are in e-cigarettes, how much nicotine or other potentially harmful chemicals are being inhaled during use, or if there are any benefits associated with using these products.

In 2009, Congress passed the Family Smoking Prevention and tobacco Control Act (P.L. 111-31). This legislation gave the FDA the authority to reduce youth smoking, prevent the sale of tobacco to minors, help current smokers quit, and reduce the toxicity of tobacco products. This legislation also gave the FDA the legal authority necessary to regulate several tobacco products, including cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, and cigars. In addition, the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act includes a provision that requires new tobacco products to be approved by the FDA before they go to market. Under the law, a tobacco product is considered new if it is first introduced on the market after February 15, 2007. On May 5, 2016, the FDA published a final deeming rule that extends their authority to cover additional tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. Should you wish to learn more about the FDA’s final rule, you may visit Deeming Tobacco Products To Be Subject to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, as Amended by the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act.

I have noted your support for the FDA Deeming Authority Clarification Act (H.R. 2058). As you know, Representative Tom Cole (R-OK-4) introduced H.R. 2058 on April 28, 2015, to address the FDA’s authority to regulate e-cigarettes. This legislation is currently pending in the House of Representatives and has not been introduced in the Senate. Please be assured that I will keep your thoughts in mind should H.R. 2058 reach the full Senate for consideration.

Again, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with me. I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

My best wishes to you.

Sincerely,
HARRY REID
United States Senator

I didn't even get a fake signature. I wouldn't have sent an email to him, but the CASAA site sends the emails to all your state reps.

Well, at least your Senator responded. I've sent the CASAA calls to action twice, and sent my representative a separate letter, all in early May, around the 9th or 10th. Here we are 5+ weeks later, and not a single response. I guess I know who I'm NOT voting for in November.

Costa Rica BAILOUT?! What ARE you talking about???
I suspect some people here are confusing Costa Rica with Puerto Rico. The former is a county in Central America while the latter is an island in the Carribean that's an unincorporated US territory currently in the grips of a government debt crisis, more or less to the US what Greece has been to the EU.

lol ... yeah she belongs there and should have been there decades ago.
Her husband should have been there too for everything that went on while they were still in Arkansas. I was thinking there was some kind of punishment when a pres. got impeached. Guess not

the scariest words ever spoken "we are from the government and we are here to help"

Yeah, I never understood that....why bother to go through an impeachment if you aren't going to back it up by some sort of punishment?
Oh well, can't fix stupid.

100% correct ...Yeah there are numerous people murdered, drugs ran through their legal office, and too many other crimes that have all been covered up........... The really sad part is that there are many unaware citizens who think those two are just the greatest.......... But, that is because many younger type folks don't do their political research.

Problem is, it isn't stupidity. It would be criminal for the general public but they have placed themselves above the law

Impeachment is the process of bringing charges, he was not convicted. Basically, case dismissed.

I think you may be right, they're like middle school students sharing test answers, "just change it a little bit and no one will be able to tell". What's most awful is that Peters is also on the Committee for Homeland Security and Governments Affairs. The last email I got from him announced his FB cover photo contest.

EXACTLY ....... they are no different than the average hard-core CRIMINAL that sits in prison....... They know exactly what they are doing and have done in the past.... They are privileged people who think the laws only apply to us and not themselves...... It's not that they are democrats either.... There are plenty of criminals who are on the right as well.......... In a nutshell, our entire Washington DC (district of criminals) has been taken over by a band of criminals who do NOT have the interests of the public in mind........... They are good actors who like the public to believe that they care but it is all a con job so that they can keep their power, money, and influence. They always make grand promises when running for office but never deliver the goods once they are elected. It's a con job, plain and simple.

I see this FDA mess in the same light. They don't have to follow the rules because they can and do make the rules fit what ever they choose to do. I am just so fed up with this whole thing :( I have prepared and their deeming regs won't affect me personally except for upsetting my peace of mind. It is going to get ugly out there when those that have no idea as to what is coming and it actually starts to affect them. At this point in time they have no idea as to what is going to happen and I actually fault every vendor out there that is not doing everything they can to let their customers know. :(

Edited to add: But I applaud all the ones that are doing all they can and there are a lot of them.

The local shop I used to go to has apparently taken a stand of:
"Let's get as much money as we can, while we can, and when they shut us down, we'll cash out and move on to the next fad."

It's sad too, because they had like 6 locations and were poised to keep growing. I'd seen them create so many jobs for people, and they were little bright spots of local economy booms.
But now, they're just in it for whatever they can rake in before the axe falls.

I don't know, that has been going on for some time now in Indiana, a lot of law suits were filed, and this was well before the deeming came out.

Yeah I know, but they still could have had some inside info, and as far as the law suits I have not heard of any updated info on any results, and the law is about to go into effect on the 1st of July. I think within a few months, a lot of B&M's are going to be shut down. I do most of my shopping online, and I DIY I don't know if Indiana can do anything or not about the online orders or not. I have a healthy supply of nicotine, and starting to stock up on flavorings, but I think those will be still available. I am really nervous about what we are in for here.:(
