The equation under the US healthcare system is slightly different. Harm Reduction = Profit Reduction.
We do have socialized medicine in this country in the form of Medicare. However, my dark side thinks to save money our government would rather the elderly die as that saves money in the long run. Can kinda see the future where Logan's Run becomes a blueprint and not sci-fi drama.

Well unless someone realizes that they would save even more money getting rid of the younger healthy people that just REFUSE to work because they would rather be professional couch potatoes and suckle at the government's teat all day long.

They aren't covered by Medicare.

You are correct.
They are covered by:
  • ObamaCare
  • Welfare
  • Food Stamps
  • They get a free ObamaPhone
  • Their 6-10 kids are covered by WIC
  • Possibly more I am forgetting.
Don't get me wrong, these programs are invaluable and definitely needed but should only be used for those that either cannot work due to mental or physical disability OR as TEMPORARY relief for those that are temporarily out of work due to layoffs and such. However people that could work, but refuse to, and want these programs to pay for everything for them for their entire lives is a problem. If we could get the ones that abuse these programs to quit, then there would be more money to improve the lives of those that truly need it.

I know some may not agree or think this is politically motivated but rest assured it isn't. My wife's uncle is in his 50's but has the mental capacity of a 8yr old. He is on some of these programs but can only get about $400/mo because that's "all they can give him". So he can't live on his own and is living with his mom who is in her 80's and not doing too well. We have no idea what will happen to him when she passes. Meanwhile, I also know a woman in her 30's that has never worked and claims she has depression (doesn't take any meds and seems to function just fine) yet gets $800/mo from SSI. Though she is married and her husband works. I have also met whole families that rake in thousands/mo and are proud that they figured out "how to milk the system" (their words) and are teaching their kids to do the same. I cannot tell you how infuriating this is to watch someone that actually needs these programs to get very little while those that don't get a lot more.

I live in CA. ;) Just read an article about how birth tourism in my state works. Wealthy women come here in droves to give birth, are placed in luxury apartments and hire midwives for prenatal care, and when the time comes, are being transported to a hospital, claim poverty and the state pays on average $50K per hospital birth.

Can you post a link? Maybe the hospital should take a lesson from life insurance companies and hire people to check these people out before they pay that kind of money. With what they could save they then could afford to hire several. jmho

Hospitals don't want to know and don't ask any questions because they know they will be reimbursed by the state. Hospitals are making money from birth tourism. Everybody is making money--CA taxpayers are picking up the tab.

Federal agents charge 19 for birth tourism in Southern California, say practice poses national threat – Orange County Register

That is just sickening. It is also exactly what I mean about people abusing programs that are supposed to help those that need it.

I was watching last night and did the same. Figure we don't have a lobby to fight Washington but maybe something like this will help with educating the public.
Even vapers may benefit. In the comments on the video, for example, one person--a vaper--seemed convinced that nic salts are by definition stronger than freebase, a misconception I've seen more than once. This may not be addressed in the film, but it's a myth that needs to be debunked.
