I wonder what the juul audio signature looks like. ;)
I would imagine that a fairly wide spectrum must be associated, as all attys do not sound the same.

Could be a big reason for their "Confidence Factor".

From Dr K.....

Introduction The study purpose was to examine the association between electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) use and smoking cessation among United States (US) adults. Duration of smoking cessation was taken into consideration since e-cigarette awareness and use were low in the US before 2010. Methods Pooled analysis of the 2016 and 2017 National Health Interview Surveys on current (N=9935) and former smokers (N=14754) was performed. Adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs), adjusted for sociodemographic factors, were calculated. Findings Current e-cigarette use was reported by 10.5% (95%CI:9.8-11.3%) of current smokers and 4.5% (95%CI:4.0-5.0%) of former smokers. Prevalence was high in former smokers of <1 year (16.8%, 95%CI:13.9-20.2%), 1-3 years (15.0%, 95%CI:13.0-17.3%) and 4-6 years (10.5%, 95%CI:8.6-12.7%) and very low in former smokers of >6 years (0.7%, 95%CI:0.5-0.9%). Similar patterns were observed for daily e-cigarette use. Current e-cigarette use was negatively associated with being a former smoker when quit duration was ignored (aPR:0.64, 95%CI:0.59-0.69) but was positively associated with being a former smoker of <1 year (aPR:1.44, 95%CI:1.12-1.84) and 1-3 years (aPR:1.21, 95%CI:1.03-1.42). Daily e-cigarette use was not associated with being a former smoker when quit duration was ignored but was positively associated with being a former smoker of <1 year (aPR:3.44, 95%CI:2.63-4.49), 1-3 years (aPR:2.51, 95%CI:2.13-2.95) and 4-6 years (aPR:1.84, 95%CI:1.49-2.26). Conclusions Daily e-cigarette use is strongly associated with recent smoking cessation (< 6 years) among US adults. Frequency of e-cigarette use and smoking cessation duration are important parameters when analyzing the effects of e-cigarettes in population surveys.

Can't wait to see if normal bodily function sounds occurring in the bathroom cause false positives.

Interesting. Any link to the original source material up yet? This is one of those the devil in the statistics papers. Could be good, could end up easily twisted, which is why diving in may, or may not, be a necessary part of it. The daily e cigarette use over time among former smokers looks pretty significant though.

It was on ResearchGate. I requested the full text but havent got it yet.

The whole "Adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs), adjusted for sociodemographic factors, were calculated." has me curious, that could slant things at will.

The audio analyzer is probably tuned to pick up the frequency of an atomizer.
I was thinking maybe it "listens" for the five fast clicks to turn the vape device on or off. My Geekvape Aegis Mini's fire button is annoyingly loud (to me) when compared to my nearly silent JAC Vapour DNA75.

It really sounds like a marketing ripoff they're falling for. Electronic scent technology isn't even close and is certainly not affordable especially for something being sold like a late night informercial. The first affordable sniffer is released for the smell of vape juice, which all have different profiles anyway and would cross react with whoever brought a dunkin donut in there?

The best it is is a photoelectric smoke detector jazzed up with wifi to notify the administration office. They're falling for a gimmick. Amazing to think people are this panicked they'd waste money on a scam like this. I can't wait until they find out that running the hot water for a while will be triggering it off too.

Tech wouldn't be that difficult. If you find the spectral absorption wavelengths of PG & VG and look specifically for them a very sensitive detector could be achieved.

That would have to be some incredibly sensitive specrtophotmeter to pick up the wisps released by what they view as their most commonly encountered enemy, a pod mod. The amount of vapor produced in teeny tiny bathroom would be very difficult to detect (ppm with dilution in the total volume of air in the sorta sealed room?) let alone a large multiple stall commercial size bathroom found in a school. You'd need to be holding a cloud competition to fog it up to detectable levels.

The CA Dept of Health studied indoor air in a vape shop several years ago. No tests for PG/VG, but did collect air samples in traps to return to their labs and test in very expensive systems such as an HPLC analysis setup which are on the expensive side and couldn't detect formaldehyde (of concern from a safety perspective, they weren't looking for PG/VG which given the high sensitivity and accuracy of their test bed I'm pretty sure they would have) or even nicotine in the ambient air. Now I know technology marches along quickly these days, but to my knowledge no one shrunk all that down to smoke detector size. Yet.

Maybe school districts buy it for the intimidation factor. Big scary website, Big Brother smelling after you in the bathroom (a wonder the teens don't die from laughter when they figure that one out) and they get scared straight to not do it. If they're spending taxpayer money in excess of the cost of a commercial smoke detector on it I sure hope they can back it up because if I were an attorney I'd bring a class action suit so fast against they company for fraud unless that were nailed down with incredibly good testing data, and the school system for misuse of public tax money on vaporware.

Now why didn't I think of that?

A company entirely devoted to anti vaping technology and education. And in an area of LI I happen to know is no silicon alley. Not only will they sell you their testing equipment, but educational brochures and blue no vaping bracelets. The kit with about 100 pamphlets, some posters, and 150 blue don't vape plastic bracelets is $595.00. For real.

Sorry, until proven otherwise this company doesn't pass my smell test.

Take me now, Lord, I've seen it all (and for just a hair under $600).

our newly elected governor is proposing a 75% sin-tax on all electronic nicotine delivery devices, nicotine and accessories sold within our state. I fee like it was just a year or so ago that we lobbied our reps to vote NO on a complete ban, on a ban indoors, etc.

we lost lobbying against the ban indoors and vaping was earmarked into a tobacco law, making it illegal to vape within 15 feet of a public building or shopping center. really upset with this new governor.

Wouldn't exhaling into one's shirt be enough to bamboozle that sensor?
I can hold a puff until there is no visible effluent. Might be traces at the molecular level, but not at the visible one.

I'm glad I have enough nicotine in my freezer to see me to my grave.

And, @Rossum, it has been a creepily mild winter.

I’m just glad I have 5 liters of nicotine in the freezer. May get one more just for the security feeling.
And I loved Maine, every time I have been there, which at least a dozen times.
If this bill gets passed, I wont go back.

That would be a shame, I would have to find a dilapidated Lobster shack in a different state to spend my money at.

Come to cape cod. Lobstahs are even bettah!!

I lived just outside of Fall River for a while, been to the Cape many times.

The Chowdah Fest in Plymouth Rock is one of my best memories though. Was driving aimlessly because the bridge to the Cape was backed up for miles, so I just picked a road to see where it went, wound up at Plymouth Rock and they had a Chowder Fest going on that day. Every restaurant in town with a great big kettle of Chowdah, passing out coffee cups full, vying for the title of Best Chowdah in Town.

What gets me is there was a Red Lobster right there on the water. With all the GREAT lobstah joints, why would anyone go there???
