Thanks so much for all the responses, I'm touched. It is my hope that you wonderful modders will continue to improve on this invention. It is kinda tricky and you have to really want it to not give up in frustration. This forum helps so much!

I smoked for 38+ years. I was never able to quit for more than 24 hours, except for the 7 days I felt too bad to do anything after my appendectomy. After searching the internet for several weeks for information about vaping, I finally ordered my first starter kit. Much of the information I gleaned was from this site. So, I would like to thank all of you for your input. Today marks 9 weeks for me since I smoked a cigarette.
40+ years of analogs up to a little over 2 packs a day sometimes in the last decade or so.
When I started smoking, cigs were 35 to 40 cents a pack in CA. The price seemed to be the same as gasoline for a number of years until the heavy taxes started in.
I remember being a nicotine addict in 8th grade. I'd spend my lunch money on cigs. I could walk into most liquor stores and buy them. If not, a vending machine was handy but expensive at 50 cents. A pack would last 3 days then unless my friends were bumming heavily. We did a lot of sharing. We all smoked back then.
I bought a 310 starter kit and 10ml bottle of RY4 @ 24mg almost 3 months ago and that was the end of it.
ECF has been extremely important to my success also. I'm extremely grateful and do what I can to pay it forward.

I smoked for 25 years, and getting close to 3 packs/day. I remember when I could buy 3 packs for a dollar. At 56, it's past time to quit. I've been vaping for a month, and my lungs are clearing up already.
Smoked for about 25y pack a day. Quit the first day of vaporing without any difficulties. On third day tried analog and through it away after second puff.

Smoked for 45 years this month. Started in college when smokers ruled on campus, waiters in fine restaurants had a light waiting before I had my cigarette/cigar (yes, cigars after dinner in restaurants) in my mouth, and 35 cents per pack.

I am new to vaping as well. My buddy has been vaping for a year and (like another poster I read on the site earlier) I was bone headed about the whole thing 'cause 3 months was the best I ever made it as well. Well he gave me one last Saturday so i wasn't exactly setting out to quit...but come Monday I realized I hadn't run out of cigarettes (cause I hadn't smoked any) and didn't feel like i needed any either so haven't touched one since last Saturday! I've been smoking for a little over 20 years and really don't want to anymore.
After reading this thread though, I'm going to look into that prozak thing!

I remember those days. When I was In Germany I got them for 19 cents a pack. ( where is the cents sign? i have never used it)
I also remember when you could put 50 cents of gas in the tank and drive and drive.
I have tried the patch, gum, etc. many times, to no avail. I was skeptical about e-cigs working too. Fortunately it got me off cigs for the last 8 months. Best thing since popcorn

A quick note about my name choice....The Fool is the first card of the Archetypes in the tarot deck. I'll get a picture of it up when I figure out how. The card shows a young man with a nap sack starting out on a journey....a new beginning. It seemed appropriate.

I'm 56, and although my how-long might depend on what counts as "starting," I've been a smoker for at least 40 years. Like others here, cigarette machines made underage buying easy, and we all knew where the unattended ones were. I also remember they cost more from the machine (like $.50 instead of $.40 maybe), and that my first legal carton a few years later cost $4.50. Used to be buying by the carton saved you about the price of a pack. I don't think that's true anymore, is it?

I just got my first PV yest. a KR8 and I can see how this can and will work. In 24hrs I went from a 1 1/2 packs to 5-6 cigarettes. I already made another juice order of some different tastes and nic levels.
My problem with quitting in the past is that I enjoy smoking, I just wanted/needed to quit cigarettes.

When I started 28 or so yrs ago, I think they were about 79 cents a pack. I would save 2 days lunch money and still get a penny candy swedish fish.
I get you too! 44 years for me, I started smoking (on a regular basis) when I was 10 years old. It wasn't even a big deal in the area where and when I grew up. All my familly members smoked, and it was just a part of growing up. I switched to e-cigs in April of this year. I had tried everything else out there, many times. And I do mean everything- gum, patches, hypnosis, magnetic therapy, adversion therapy, counciling, cold turkey, some multiple times. I actually had half a lung removed when I was 19, they said it was cancer (But it turned out not to be - I found out it wasn't years later), but I was so addicted that I could not stop. And I really wanted to, for myself, my husband, and most of all, my kids. So, I understand, and am sure a lot of others here do too. You are not alone. We must all just support one another and we will all be just fine! May you always have good vapor and a charged battery!
I smoked for 31 years. I bought cigarettes out of the machine for 75 cents a pack. You could buy them at the store for about 60 cents. I tried several times to quit cold turkey, nerver lasting more than a few days. I quit by using the patch in June of 2006. That lasted 13 months. I gained 40 pounds, and being overweight already, just made me more miserable. One stressful day and it was back to the cancer sticks. I was so angry with myself and embarassed when I started smoking again, but I kept on smoking. The last 2 years I'd been looking at the e cig but I was so afraid of failing again, I resisted. When I purchased the e cig in April I told myself I didn't have to quit. I'd just use it to smoke inside, since I only go outside to smoke. I started vaping April 7th. The first day I cut my cigarette intake down to 10. I was a pack to a pack and a half a day smoker. I set no goals for myself. If I wanted to smoke, I did. On April 19th, when I went to bed, I realized I didn't go out for a smoke that day and went to sleep feeling happy. I've been smoke free ever since. Also, without trying, I've lost 6 pounds since I started vaping. I feel happy and healthy.

I really enjoyed reading your post. the cheapest I remember were .74 cents for marlboro mediums 100s on special.
I too tried many "quitting" methods including "the patch", gum, zyban, and chantix with no success. I have now been smoke free for alittle over a month now with no desire to have a cigarette.
tonight I started back walking again for one hour. I walked 3.5 miles. very excited to take those first steps back to being healthy. no trouble breathing, didn't have to stop once for a break. my plan is to walk one hour at least 5 times a week.
