Evening....Happy New Years Eve....

Went to my sisters for a bit because it was close to the Target I was at. Yes I bought the Roku Ultra. Took me an hour to get it setup mainly due to getting it on the network. See I didn't have a pass word for the network. I let the devices talk to the router and make up their own password. Well Roku can't do that. So while trying to put it in manually I borked the router and had to do a hard reset. So I had to setup the network again to get things back up. This time I made a 12 character password.

So it's working good. First time setup could be easier. Got some buffering now and then. May have to go try wired if it gets bad. I think I'll be needing a new modem and router before long.(both are getting outdated) I've got bad buffer bloat on the network and haven't found a way to fix it.

Other than that the Roku Ultra is working good. Like anything else I'll be removing some of the channels it preinstalled and adding some others. Directv Now was the first one.
Have you ever gone in your router settings to mess around? There are things you can do that can dramatically improve your signal. Try isolating your Roku to 5.0 Ghz bandwidth. Then go through trying each channel (there are 11 in the 5.0 Ghz bandwidth I believe) to improve your signal even more. To check the signal on your roku try this...

Anything 25 and above should give you HD. If you've never messed with your router software PM me and I'll be glad to walk you through it. Most of the time you will be able to make significant improvements.

Yes I've tried all kinds of tweaks and nothing works. The router is an older Dlink and will only do 2.5ghz. The modem only has Ipv4 do Ipv6 is no go. The buffer bloat is over the top. I also updated the driver for the network card in the PC.

Nice work! Also on the Roku. I was going to tell you that all you need is your WiFi password. My setup was under 10 minutes! But enjoy!

It was only about 10 minutes..The extra time was setting up the network and reconnecting things...Again!!:?:

Ain’t it always the way? A simple task leads to a dozen others and everything takes longer than it should. Glad you got it sorted.

Looks like I will make it midnight - Eastern Time zone anyway. Watching Jack The Giant Slayer.

Earlier we watched Colossal. Freaky movie! You start out thinking you’re watching a silly rom-com. About halfway through everything takes a weird turn.

Both courtesy of the Vegas Library.

And Vegas is going nuts with fireworks right now. We are far from the Strip. This is nearby. Guess the whole town just loves a good party. Cats are not loving it though. :)

We went to a White Trash Bash last night. Some of the get-ups were hilarious! One gal had a pregnant belly, 2 babies, a cigarette, black eyes and a huge hickie. Her (Christmas fleece) pants rode low in the back and she had red lace panties pulled up high to show.. I laughed so hard!

I haven't left the house today. It's super cold, just doing 5 min of chores was enough outside time for me today.
Off to bed! Happy New Year friends!

I have an old Dlink here I use to plug my vonage into. The wifi is next to worthless. It's laughable by today's standards and I have disabled the wifi on it. Yes, I'd say you're ready for an upgrade. Most are all dualband now and essential IMO. My Roku performance improved dramatically by isolating them on 5.0GHz. That can be done through the router software (usually through blacklists and/or whitelists). And once you have them isolated you can go into the channel options (I believe there are 11 of them for both bands) and selecting each one to see which gives you the best signal. This also makes a big difference. There is software you can download to your laptop or smartphone that will measure traffic and signals. Instead, I just used the signal meter on my Rokus and watched it as I switched bands and then channels within the bands. After all, that is the true measure. The thing about 5.0GHz is it is much improved at shorter distances versus 2.4GHz. There is little congestion on the 5.0GHz band. Much cleaner. The 2.4GHz is better for longer distances and most of the extenders function only in 2.4GHz. Most people let their wifi spit out both bands simultaneously. But I found my Rokus still operated (selected) on the 2.4GHz band. Why I don't know but I got into my router software and isolated them to the 5.0GHz band. That solved the problem.

There is also new wifi technology called AC. It is an upgrade to the current best technology (N technology). I believe AC uses three bands. One band is dedicated to communications which frees up more bandwidth for raw wifi signals. I don't have AC but they are supposed to be the bomb (and expensive too). AC will be the most prevalent wifi technology in the years to come and will replace N technology as the preferred method. The speeds AC provides are dramatically better than N (which is dramatically better than its predecessors). Netgear and Linksys remain the most preferred brands for quality wifis. The Netgear Orbi sells at $350 and more (depending on the number of satellites you get). The Linksys Nighthawk isn't as much but still expensive. Both use AC technology. Probably still overkill for what you need. But both brands still make excellent routers for N technology. And then there is the whole issue of overbuying wifi speed when you factor in your internet speeds and the dropoff in wifi speed from your internet service. That's a whole other extended conversation and I'm too lazy to type it out. But it is very possible to buy a super duper fast wifi that you'll never realize because your internet speeds could never support it. Pretty safe to say if you get a 300mbps you'll be covered nicely. For reference, I get 118mbps service from my ISP (and this is very consistent). When testing the 2.4GHz wifi band it drops to 34mbps and the 5.0GHz band delivers about 45mbps (tested on my laptop which is located next to the router). Last thing (as you know), the receiving device location is critical...and I mean it can be VERY sensitive. I can move my roku just inches and it will make a dramatic difference in some areas. My kitchen roku feeds from an extender and I'm amazed at the difference even moving it six inches can make. I have the streaming stick that plugs directly into the HDMI port of the TV. I got a male/female HDMI cable and put the Roku on the end so I was able to move the stick more freely to maximize the signal.

Once again, I can pull up the signal strength on my Roku via a "secret screen" by clicking...

Not sure if your ultra uses the same sequence. There are several Roku "secret screens". Most are Chinese but some of it is useful...especially the one which shows signal strength. If that sequence doesn't work on your ultra I'm sure you can look it up on the web for the right one. I have all the sequences for all the secret screens if you want them.
