Cold morning here in north Texas. It was 14 degrees at 7:30 this morning.

Had to go out and break the ice on the water tank for the cows to get a drink, and do the same on the neighbor's tank because he's out of town. And I had to go cut some firewood. Of course, I couldn't have cut firewood last week before it got cold. That would have made too much sense.

It has warmed up to 27 deg by noon today. Last night the temperature was supposed to be about 20 deg, with the wind chill bringing it to 0-10 deg. I think it was close to the coldest I've ever felt it here. I saw historical data that said in 1930 it got to -4 degrees. I have never seen negative temperatures here, and I hope I don't! We may hit 32-33 degrees for a high today. Normally we are 57 for a high, and 37 for a low temperature here. The cold went right through my warmest jacket and gloves last night, I couldn't believe it.

Oh, I forgot to say I watched the Metalhead episode from the show Black Mirror. Oh it was a good show. We don't need technology like that. That is what Black Mirror really is. It shows you the technology uses, and the downside to it. These folks who are pushing this, haven't thought it through far enough.

Cripes! Make sure the bears didn't tip over your outhouse too.

Pappy, I think the folks who experience cold regularly use some type of heating element to warm their livestock tanks. You could use a solar panel to keep it juiced. I have no idea what type of heat they use though. We don't experience cold like this enough to worry about it. If you go out of town though, it is nice to keep the water from freezing though for your animals.

3-5 minutes outside was more than enough for my son's old dog. He has to be in the house all day in this kind of cold. Bella would like it if I let her out for about a half hour or more. Cassie would probably last 10-15 minutes before she decided being inside was a whole lot better. (I intentionally didn't give her the usual hair cut, and let it grow during this cold spell) Good thing too, because I don't have a doggie coat for her! She is strictly a house dog, but goes out on a leash to sniff, gather leaves to chew up...and potty break.

LOL. We're not that remote.

It's weather like this that makes me never want to have a dairy cow. You have to milk them at least once a day (sometimes twice a day) every day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Doesn't matter how cold or hot it is, or whether you're sick or hungover or whatever. Sounds more like prison than fun to me.

kkay, it's still only 24 degrees here with a wind chill of 15.

This morning the wind chill was 1 degree. Dang!

I'm sure you and I are not going to get any sympathy from FranC, who posted the 10 day forecast for her area in New Hampshire and the 10 day HIGH temp was 17 degrees with single digits or below zero for the lows. Brrrr.

Tonight the temperature is estimated to get 17 deg with a wind chill as low as 8 deg. Some people here lost their electricity late last night because of a wreck. I know those folks are glad to have it back now. It is 33 deg now, and I can't believe that feels fairly warm compared to late last night, and this morning!

Pappy we just don't have the same clothes here that they do up north, to stay warmer. Plus we have a wet cold, which feels worse than a dry cold. When I was in the military I was up north quite a bit. Their coats and gloves were better than what they sell here. Luckily I do have a bunch of wool socks, and believe me they come in handy this time of the year. I used to have a snow suit, and some great warm boots, but they don't fit me anymore. My feet grew a half inch with each of my kids. Up north I would wear a turtleneck, with a sweater shirt over that just for inside the house. I loved the sledding and miss it. However the summers there were far superior to the heat we have here. So it is a trade off for sure. Well, enough of the weather for now.

Last night I just had a decent sized glass of wine to celebrate. I didn't break out the elderberry wine, but I was tempted. I was saving that for a special occasion. I do have some blackberry wine, but it isn't homemade. I bought it a long time ago, and never drank it. The elderberry wine is a little sweet, but strong. 3 people could easily drink a bottle of that, and KNOW IT. I have the secret recipe for it, but not the materials to make it with. I did see the process from start to finish though. It has been a while, and I took notes. (lots of notes!) My dad used to make some great homemade blackberry wine from his own berries. He never gave me a bottle of it though! My mom gave the stuff you need to make it with away. She didn't know I would've loved to have it.

If you think you have strep throat David, you need to see a doctor! I sent you a recipe that might make you feel better, at least until you can see a doctor. Check your pm.

Thanks but I'd need to go to the store for the stuff to make it... I've been taking some things for it and I have a DOT physical due by the 13th.

The 13th? If you have strep you need to be seen right away. Sometimes it can bring other ailments along with it. My son got some type of arthritis from it, luckily it went away. A kid in his class had some liver ailment from this same strep throat going around. (they were in the same class) Adults can get Scarlet Fever from Strep Throat. (so it isn't just kids) That can lead to even more nasty problems.

When we lived in Missouri lots of the people in the community had dairy farms. Their lives revolve around milking time and it is tough work. Not for me for sure.

David, hope you feel better soon. Strep is rough!

Any New Year's resolutions? I'm starting a strength program next week but that's about it for me. Ignore the scale, build a little muscle is my goal.

It's currently 15 degrees here and won't get above freezing until Friday. I'm ready for summer!
