I have Open Office Apache. It is free and I love it. I used to have Office and all that, on an old computer. It came with the computer, but nowadays they want you to buy it all separate. It does make the computer cheaper that way. I heard talk of subscriptions to Office. I don't know if that went through or not. No way am I doing that. That isn't about to happen.

Subscription is about the only way to purchase Office products these days. And they are still packaged. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and one other one. And it isnt particulary cheap.

My laptop is a very old heavy Think Pad. I don’t use it for anything other than shopping and checking my email. I’m fine with that. I don’t have a passion for computers, use my phone for most everything. I’ve been making a very conscious effort to use the phone to call people, instead of email, and I’ve gotten back to hand writing letters and sending cards. It’s a lost art, and who doesn’t love a hand written letter?

Today was my youngest daughters first day of her Senior year. Yes, I cried. Where did the time go?

Anyway... hope all is well! I finally got an order in with HHV in time for the sale. I always seem to miss them. Completely my fault, I get the emails. I just get busy and forget.

And I just unloaded my old desktop. Would have been fine for Office. Oh well. Dont really want a desktop cluttering things up. I can always use Apache.

If you’d like to use your desktop, I have some older Office versions here that I don’t need. I think I have 2010 and 2007. I even still have the discs for ‘97. I paid so darn much for them that I can’t bring myself to throw away the discs. I have the license keys too. Let me know and I’d be glad to get a set to you. :)

No it isn’t cheap - unless you run a business that depends on having them. With the Exchange email server, it’s 12.95/mo. My cash flow likes not having a big yearly outlay for new versions. But it’s a bite all the same.

Not as bad as Adobe. The Web Premium suite set me back $1400 EACH copy back in the day. One for me, and another for the PC for my assistant. They had a way of checking via your network and wouldn’t allow programs to open if another computer was running the same program. Creeps!

Adobe’s monthly subscription is $52.99, which was a discounted rate for registered users of past versions. Ugh.

If I stop paying, the software stops working. And all my creative files are rendered inaccessible to me. At least when you bought software it could work to open your existing files. For at least a few years.

I love that you are doing your part to bring back direct communication! I always hated the phone (tyranny of the urgent) and I was annoyingly slow to write back to people. But you’re right, it’s a lost art that even I miss!

Wow, your girls sure did grow up fast! And I’m glad you got to order at sale price.

Fresh Grindz tonight. I just loaded it up. I have had to change my wick a lot lately. I think I need to make a new coil. Maybe tomorrow I will do that.

I used to have to rewick everyday. With the bigger coil (3mm ID) I can get nearly a week on a wick before the taste starts going bad. Hey, at least Fresh Grindz burns clean!

I forgot to mention the most awful phone scam ever! Yesterday I had two calls and voice messages from these terrible people. A recording of a woman’s voice - very grave - saying I faced arrest and the freezing of my assets (that’d be a small popsicle LOL) unless I called the number. Very official sounding. Others online reported the same scammer calls. It’s awful because even if people don’t call back, it would be distressing to them! Everyone’s stressed out enough as it is.

I don't get many calls so for me it's easy. If I don't know the number I swipe it to voce mail.

I got rid of all my desktops. I use my laptop. I'm going to try and uninstall/re-install Office on my laptop and see what happens. I like your offer though. Let's see what happens. I have some AutoCAD files that link up with Excel. I don't recall having success trying to link up with Apache files so Excel might be a better option for me. Come to think of it, I think I am having trouble linking up with the 2000 Excel with 2015 AutoCAD. I'll bet it will link up to 2010. Is it something I can load and return to you?

That same scammer calls me all the time. In fact I just deleted one off the answ machine this morning. Gotta call them or all my assets will be seized. Yeah, right! Come and get 'em! And bring a body bag with you so I can ship you back under the rock from where you came. Maddens me knowing they probably prey on older folks.

Same here. I don't even know why I have a LAN line anymore. It's a waste of money.

Well, I looked to see the last time I used Word. There were two MS security updates since. I uninstalled one of them but Word was still messed up. Tried to uninstall the other update but they don't give me that option. Must be mandatory. Re-installed Office 2000. That didn't solve the problem. Thought about doing a recovery from a previous date but then I'm not sure what all that would do to me. Yes, I can protect my files and folders in a recovery but what would it do to apps and programs that I can't even think of? Too risky. Excel seems to work perfectly fine. Whatever. I'd like to whine that MS screwed another customer but then we're talking about an 18 year old product. They never guaranteed it would be viable for 18 years. 18 year old software is 500 in dog years. I'd still like to see something bad happen to someone over there because I'm just that kind of guy. :)

BTW, that software was $500 back when i bought it. Actually, I had the company I worked for pay for it and somehow it made its way into my house when I left the company. :) We complain about the price of Office these days. Compare that to my $500. But then those products are kind of ho hum these days.

Bronze,
I have had better luck with file conversions using LibreOffice. Don't know if it will work for your needs but it seems a little more facile in handling different file formats. Libre is open source like OpenOffice and can be used for no cost.
I am an old time WordPerfect user and Libre is the only word processing program and spreadsheet that can handle WordPerfect and Excel spreadsheets without formatting or formula calculation problems.
