Agreed "Libraries" seemed odd to me from the start, an artificial construct without direct access, only through Windows shortcuts. It always seemed kind of (I don't really have a word) and I, like you, did not trust Libraries.

Exactly. Always best, wherever we still can, to avoid having Win control anything.

And I’m now figuring out how to replace my boot drive with an SSD. My main workstation is an HP Z820 which should be wonderfully fast. The bargain laptop has an SSD and boots at least 10 times faster. There are other factors that would cause that. Thanks to @retic1959 linking to an SSD at a great price, it’s on! If I can get all the settings in BIOS and whatnot to play nicely.

If it turns into a nightmare, I blame Retic. :sneaky: ;)

So I'm a little confused. If I open File Explorer I can see those folders where everything dumps into twice (e.g., Documents, downloads, pictures, videos, etc..). It's below "This PC" and again under C/Users/My Name. The contents mirrors each other best I can tell. Why is that? I'm assuming that's what you guys are talking about.

Afternoon....Back home. Went and got my hair cut (what I still have anyway.:p). Then to Costco to pick up my hearing aid that was repaired. Seems to be okay. And last to Kroger for food.. Got beer and pizza will go in the toaster oven soon..

I set my watch every Friday evening when you put the pizza rolls in the toaster oven. :)

SyncToy is backing up now.
Backup was successful. Went in and changed one document and ran it again. Sure enuf, that one document popped up on the preview so it works. I like that preview so we know exactly what is updating. Nice program CMD! Thanks.

BTW, I am just backing up C/Users/My Name. I exclude system files and hidden files (still 40,000 remain). Is there any reason to do this any different?

AHCI is the only required setting in the Bios , it should be in that mode by default anyway . The free software that Western Digital offers for download will clone your C drive to the SSD perfectly as long as the SSD has the same or larger capacity . BTW you need an adapter bracket to mount the SSD in the pc , the SSD is 2.5 inches and the regular drives are 3.5 inches . The brackets are cheap , 3$ - $4 .

I have a Western Digital external drive and the backup software failed. I can still use the drive (and just got done using it for the SyncToy backup) but the software on it is crap. At least mine is.

That’s what we are talking about. The user folder is where Win Documents, etc. lives. Then there are the shortcuts to get to those folders.

To get a backup of Win system files, you’re better off with the Windows full backup where you clone your hard drive. That’s the easiest way to restore to a new hard drive - it will have Windows and all of your installed programs.

I use an app called PureSync to backup my files and pics and all that. But not to backup Win and installed programs. This is all just my preference though.

Is that what is called the system image program in backup?

I used their cloning software , it will only clone a whole drive , worked perfectly for me .

Yes, it’s usually that easy. The HP Z820 is an enterprise level workstation with some particular finickiness to address. I can only use the NAND SSD which is fine. But it also has to be connected to a particular SATA controller on the motherboard. And it has to be the only hard drive connected to the system on install of Windows. Otherwise it won’t be recognized as a bootable drive. I won’t be able to clone. I’d rather do a clean install anyway.

I have to buy the special 2.5 in bracket from HP. Like I said, this is a particular beast.

That’s the one. It’s best to have a system image or clone of a drive be the only thing on that external drive. Either that, or it needs its own separate partition.

I have WD software too that didn’t work for me. The WD external drives I have are excellent, but not the software.

So when I go to do a system image I can select what I want to backup? If that is a yes then my next question is what should I back up if I'm separately backing up my Users files?

    Sounds like a PITA .
