That’s the one. It’s best to have a system image or clone of a drive be the only thing on that external drive. Either that, or it needs its own separate partition.

I have WD software too that didn’t work for me. The WD external drives I have are excellent, but not the software.
I have 3 drives in my system , I use the file manager in Linux to simply drag and drop folders to where I want them . My documents are on all 3 drives . No fuss , no muss .

So when I go to do a system image I can select what I want to backup? If that is a yes then my next question is what should I back up if I'm separately backing up my Users files?
You should probably clone the drive if you have the space , it'll make life easier if you have to restore your system .

So when I go to do a system image I can select what I want to backup? If that is a yes then my next question is what should I back up if I'm separately backing up my Users files?

Retic answered this more clearly than I did as far as cloning vs system image. As for separately backing up your user files, I’d keep doing that and have both. A backup of your user files only is easier to keep updated and gives you quick retrieval should one or more of your files be lost or corrupted.

A clone of your drive is a way to quickly get your OS and all installed programs onto a new hard drive without reinstalling it all one by one. You can’t choose which files go on it - it’s a full clone of everything.

The clone of your drive is not something you can easily browse through to locate a file you lost. Unless they’ve changed it, the clone is one big “image” file, sort of like a ZIP file.

That’s why you still do a simple synced backup of your documents, pics, etc. You can easily browse and find the backup of any file you need.

A system image is a snapshot of the OS while a clone is the whole enchilada . I'd go with cloning to make sure your data is backed up .

Yes! This is the clear way to say this.

And my system is a PITA in some ways. But it’s a glorious beast that’s lasted a long time (knock wood). It’s easy to pop open and work on. Being non-standard - not a “regular” PC - means I have to do things a little differently. But I love it anyway.

I like my Lenovo . Push button to open the case , drives are in screwless caddies in a snap in module . I7 at 3.4 ghz and a fast Nvidia graphics card . Three OS's on three drives , I can switch the OS in seconds with the SSD's .

So if I have a system image AND a file backup wouldn't that be the equivalent of a clone?

And how does one go about cloning? Is that a downloaded program from somewhere? And wouldn't ongoing clone updates take longer than just a file update? Files are always changing so I can see where updating is important. A system generally stays constant unless one is adding programs all the time (which I do rarely). Of course, there's always the infamous Windows Updates.

My old Logitech trackball died on me a coupla days ago . Dam near 9 years of daily use out of it , I think it cost me $20 when I got it . I tried using a backup mouse that I had but I'm not used to being tethered by a cable to the pc and moving a mouse feels un-natural to me . I bit the bullet and got this as a replacement , I'm loving the angle on this . My hand falls naturally on it , less strain on the wrist now .

Looks odd. But something that odd looking has to be good. I'm usually game for something like that but not sure I want to take an $80 risk at this point. 9 years for something like that is damn good.

A clone takes longer than a file update , having both is ideal in case your drive craps out or Winbloze update craps on you . You can get away with backing up just your files if you have a way to reinstall Winbloze itself . I have Winbloze 10 on a usb stick if I need to reinstall it . This fits on a usb stick and will clone any system .

It's pricey , but it's a help with the arthritis . I hope it holds up as well as my old one did , It's a lot heavier than my old one and the base is rubberized , not as easy to acidentally knock over , don't know how many times my old one hit the floor , it was slick plastic underneath . It had little felt pads that eventually fell off .

Watching a You Tube review of that thing. Looks kinda neat. I can see where it would take some getting used to.

That’s what we are talking about. The user folder is where Win Documents, etc. lives. Then there are the shortcuts to get to those folders.

To get a backup of Win system files, you’re better off with the Windows full backup where you clone your hard drive. That’s the easiest way to restore to a new hard drive - it will have Windows and all of your installed programs.

I use an app called PureSync to backup my files and pics and all that. But not to backup Win and installed programs. This is all just my preference though.
I tend to create all my folders on desktop, then I know where they are to do a straight copy from/to. Have never used Winblows weird folder system.

That's so different that by the time I need one, I'm gonna have to ask retic what a mouse looks like. I won't recognize them any more!

It feels more natural than my old one , it's easier on my wrist . It comes with two bases and it pivots so it has two angles , three including flat like my old one , It can run as a wired unit with the usb cable while the battery is charging , my old one couldn't do that .
