So easy, even a girl could do it. I did it long ago when helping someone clear their woods. It was a corkscrew wedge. Hardest part was getting the sledgehammer aim right. Then CRACK and tumble away of logs — split and ready to burn.

General, you may enjoy this. You recall that I had some trees taken down near the house. I had them leave the trees and all where they fell to save a pot load of money. I've been moving down the tree limbing them as I went. I got around to going after the main trunks and eventually found they were really heavy, shocking, I know. I couldn't cut them on the ground, I'd mess up the chain. I sat down and thought (at this my lovely wife ran from the house screaming, "NOOOOOOO, no thinking"). I used the truck to drag each trree into a clear area. I got my floor jack out, took all of the extensions off and wedged it under the tree trunk. I raised the trunk and put jack stands under it. This raised the trunk up off the ground and I could cut without bending way over, never damaged the chain. Then moved the floor jack down the trunk a bit and repeated. I hate hate hate to ask for help and I was determined to that job by my self. Floor jack, jack stands, a pickup, a rope, a chainsaw, a boy and his dog. Good fun.
Here's another peavey with log stand.

Yes it is! Amazing how easy stuff becomes when you have the right tools. :)

You know even with a manual I still have to look things up on the Silverado. I just figured out why the MPG information was switching between V6 and V4.. Turns out it's AFM (active fuel manage). It turns off two cylinders when it doesn't need them. Says it should add 5 to 7 percent fuel savings. Guess we'll see. Not really any good way to disable it that I can find.

I’m guessing it switches to 4 when you’re cruising at a steady pace? I’d kind of like that. Don’t need six when you’re just cruising. Though I wonder how they do it. Do they shut down the same two cylinders all the time or do they rotate to even out the wear?

I have a better idea.... to save gas at cruzin speeds... DO THE SPEED LIMIT!... you would be amazed at how much gas is saved when you do 70 mph as compared to 85, especially in a Pickup truck. ( dont know if its a southern thing or its nation wide but PU truck owners down here have no idea what a speed limit is).

bought the wifey a dozen roses ( from a grocery store) and she added the sprinkle package to the water as directed and within 3 days the roses started "wilting" just below the bud...
she was a bit dismayed about it... I told her they were the rare and hard to find " Look Down Roses"... once they start opening up, they look down....

It's a combination of programing and mechanical. So it shuts off the same cylinders. It's GMs answer to federal mandates. The feds are happy and the people deal with the problems. Every auto maker has something like it. From reading a lot of people don't like it and it's had problems. High oil usage is common. Dealers say it can't be shut off but people find a way. So far with my driving it doesn't switch very much and other than the MPG info I don't notice it. People that have disabled it or tricked it into not working haven't noticed much change in MPG usage. All Cylinders. All the time.

WooHoo! Nuttin' like determination.

Here's another way. You make your log cuts from the top. Go 3/4's of the way thru. Roll the log and finish cutting from the other side. EZPZ Or EZ Peavey. :)

Are you making your weenie saw work or did you get another saw from somewhere?

Thanks for the ideas, yes, I am making the 16 inch Stihl do the job. It is slow work but very satisfying. When I look at what I have done and know that I can do the rest..well, at seventy-four, it just feels right.

I wonder if you can put an 18" bar on that Stihl. Might be worth asking your Stihl guy. How many cc is your Stihl?

30cc is pretty small. Don't think it could handle an 18" bar either. My 18 has a 36cc and that's kind of on the small end of an 18.

I don't think that they offer an larger bar. As I work my way down the trunk, I may find that the saw is too small for me to use safely. I have never done a plunge cut, I may try that today. If you don't hear from me for a while then you will know that my confidence exceeded my skills. I have been watching videos and they are helpful. Before I try, I will resharpen the chain. It seems that, if it is sharp then the plunge appears to be a lot safer, I have learned that muscle and force do not work as well as a sharp chain.
It's gonna be fun.

A neighbor has a larger saw but he has no more experience than I do but he is the smartest kid in the class and is chattering all the time, I can't think about what I am doing. And, I hate borrowing anyone's tools. I don't want to buy him a new one if I mess up. And I generally more meticulous about maintenance, such as an engine that will run at the required speed, good gas and a properly adjusted sharpened chain.

Did you file your rakers?

Here is a handy tool for the sprocket at the end of your bar (if you have a sprocket at the end of your bar). Most Lowes have them. Can get on Amazon too.

Oh, and flip your bar now and again. Evens out the wear.
