As bad as I feel for the restaurants struggling, I’ve been determined not to go out to eat. Turns out I’m ruined for it by the healthier, fresh food I’ve been learning to make. Our friend wanted to go to a Mexican place she likes for her birthday last week. My first mouthful was a piece of pork that was almost all fat. There was a decent sauce but the pork had no flavor. $100 for three of us and I’m not doing that again. Cheaper at home AND better.

I am more worried about summer thunderstorms when it is hot and humid. You already know how they can pop up in the Carolinas. One good thing about a chest freezer, it should stay cold for several hours as long as you don't open it.

True. A summer T-storm can knock out your power for a few hours or maybe even a day. But an ice storm can knock it out for a week. Just looking at the odds.

Maybe Brett should just haul his freezer over to your place and your generator. You could “watch over those treasures” for him.

And he can swing by with the family on weekends to cook some up. Share a little with you and boom! Your payment on a plate.

Yeah, yeah. That’s a good idea. ;)

A 2x4x8 at Home Depot is $8.25.

Neither is a half gallon of orange juice.

Interest rates have to rise or we will be inflated into abject poverty while Wall Street becomes wealthier and wealthier. The cruelest most crushing tax of all - inflation. Anyone remember, other than Bronze and I, the Wiemar Republic and its aftermath? It did not work well for the world.

You can’t just keep printing money and what we printed during the pandemic combined with what the American socialists are proposing is a Wiemar recipe. What’s worse is there is a significant population in this country who welcome a collapse.

since I'm sitting here in the aftermath of the weimar (sic) republic I have to defend that poor attempt at democracy that had no chance from the get go.
the weimar constitution was not all bad - it was crafted with the US constitution in mind, but had to give the president a lot of power to appease the monarchists who wanted to keep the emperor - i.e. a powerful "boss". that was the main error that ultimately - by an amendment to the constitution - created the "super"-president status that was crafted for hitler - technically the nazi government and the reich was still under the "weimar constitution". they abandoned their freedom and democracy open eyed and somewhat deliberate. the constitution was just all worthless as the enabling act allowed hitler to do whatever he pleased
Weimar Constitution - Wikipedia

the hyperinflation that happened during the weimar republic was pre-programmed before the republic and constituion were created. pre-weimar, germany was a monarchy and the emperor was convinced he'ld win the war (ww I) eventually and would be able to pay back all the debt by collecting reparations from the defeated nations.
it happened the other way around. after the war monarchy was upended and the weimar republic created. but they still had to pay a LOT of reparations to france AND still had to pay back all that debt from the war. once the banks started to want their money back (at school we were taught it was american banks btw - I could not find anything corroborating that doing a quick google search), it all went downhill. the gov't had no choice but print more money, eventually (iirc) abandon the gold standard (sound familiar?) and crippling and destroying the economy creating famines and poverty all over the country. that laid base for hitlers "movement" that was blaming everything on other countries (i.e. the reparation france wanted), identifying the jews (all of them) for the economic downturn and all other ailments and totally ignoring the fact that part of that debt came from their own enthusiasm when rushing into WWI just a bit over a decade ago. Add to that that the German army never actually lost the war on the battlefield, but was declared loser by bureaucrats and diplomats at the negotiating table. (at least that's what's been told - the so called "dolchstosslegende" - or Stab-in-the-Back Myth)
Hyperinflation in the Weimar Republic - Wikipedia

That, combined with a lot of propaganda (hitler was the first to use the new medium called "radio") laid the groundwork for the German population to become f...ing nazis and trying to kill their neighbours and all jews. But, again, they did it all open eyed. the nsdap (nazi party) got the majority fair and square.

So, imho, the weimar republic is not to blame alone. the stupidity of people in combination with the previous war and severe poverty and economic downfall did the trick to let a monster create the worst catastrophe in recent history.
and after May 1945 they all learnt quickly to say "no nazi" in English (or Russian) - at least that last part is literally what my grandpa told me. I have never found out his true colors and what he did back then. He got wounded a week after he was sent to the battlefield (ukraine) and was a great grandpa. that's all i know and I ever could find out. (oh, and I know that he was indeed almost starving as a kid and a few of his siblings didn't make it. and "after hitler came it all got better instantly")

Oh I think you’re spot on. The Weimar Constitution was quite democratic (or republic based). But it was doomed to fail and when you get right down to it, the republic (or any govt) had no chance in the aftermath of WW1. I could be wrong but I believe the US did not sign or approve the Treaty of Versaille. It was at least roundly denounced here in the States as being too punitive and a recipe for disaster. The critics were absolutely correct. It led to the rise of a madman and ultimately WW2. Inflation was but one outcome/cause.

It’s informative to hear what you were taught and your perspective. Thank you. I don’t believe I was given the full, unbiased information in school. I’ve learned a lot since then.

This part of what you posted nails the real underbelly:

“after the war monarchy was upended and the weimar republic created. but they still had to pay a LOT of reparations to france AND still had to pay back all that debt from the war. once the banks started to want their money back (at school we were taught it was american banks btw - I could not find anything corroborating that doing a quick google search), it all went downhill.”

This pattern of bankers being the only real “winners” in war dates back centuries. There’s even evidence going back to at least the 15th century that financiers intentionally stirred conflict and lent money to both sides in the ensuing wars.

The last phase of the historic pattern is to crash the economy.

And I’ve seen credible evidence that U.S. banks — among others — were involved.
