since I'm sitting here in the aftermath of the weimar (sic) republic I have to defend that poor attempt at democracy that had no chance from the get go.
the weimar constitution was not all bad - it was crafted with the US constitution in mind, but had to give the president a lot of power to appease the monarchists who wanted to keep the emperor - i.e. a powerful "boss". that was the main error that ultimately - by an amendment to the constitution - created the "super"-president status that was crafted for hitler - technically the nazi government and the reich was still under the "weimar constitution". they abandoned their freedom and democracy open eyed and somewhat deliberate. the constitution was just all worthless as the enabling act allowed hitler to do whatever he pleased
Weimar Constitution - Wikipedia
the hyperinflation that happened during the weimar republic was pre-programmed before the republic and constituion were created. pre-weimar, germany was a monarchy and the emperor was convinced he'ld win the war (ww I) eventually and would be able to pay back all the debt by collecting reparations from the defeated nations.
it happened the other way around. after the war monarchy was upended and the weimar republic created. but they still had to pay a LOT of reparations to france AND still had to pay back all that debt from the war. once the banks started to want their money back (at school we were taught it was american banks btw - I could not find anything corroborating that doing a quick google search), it all went downhill. the gov't had no choice but print more money, eventually (iirc) abandon the gold standard (sound familiar?) and crippling and destroying the economy creating famines and poverty all over the country. that laid base for hitlers "movement" that was blaming everything on other countries (i.e. the reparation france wanted), identifying the jews (all of them) for the economic downturn and all other ailments and totally ignoring the fact that part of that debt came from their own enthusiasm when rushing into WWI just a bit over a decade ago. Add to that that the German army never actually lost the war on the battlefield, but was declared loser by bureaucrats and diplomats at the negotiating table. (at least that's what's been told - the so called "dolchstosslegende" - or Stab-in-the-Back Myth)

That, combined with a lot of propaganda (hitler was the first to use the new medium called "radio") laid the groundwork for the German population to become f...ing nazis and trying to kill their neighbours and all jews. But, again, they did it all open eyed. the nsdap (nazi party) got the majority fair and square.
So, imho, the weimar republic is not to blame alone. the stupidity of people in combination with the previous war and severe poverty and economic downfall did the trick to let a monster create the worst catastrophe in recent history.
and after May 1945 they all learnt quickly to say "no nazi" in English (or Russian) - at least that last part is literally what my grandpa told me. I have never found out his true colors and what he did back then. He got wounded a week after he was sent to the battlefield (ukraine) and was a great grandpa. that's all i know and I ever could find out. (oh, and I know that he was indeed almost starving as a kid and a few of his siblings didn't make it. and "after hitler came it all got better instantly")
